Atomic Bomb Test

The Atomic Cannon, at 280 mm, was the largest nuclear capable mobile artillery piece manufactured by the United States. On May 25, 1953, a 280 mm cannon fired an atomic projectile a distance of 7 miles at the Nevada Test Site. Twenty 280 mm cannons were manufactured. None were used in battle. (Sound effects Added.)

There was this weird, temporary time in the 1950s where we actually thought conventional Warfare could incorporate small tactical nuclear weapons to wipe out armored columns, ship convoys, Etc. This was before the Soviet Union had a big nuclear Arsenal with the delivery means to get them here. The idea of tactical nuclear weapons being commonly used went bye-bye once both sides had enough warheads and sophisticated enough delivery systems to guarantee Armageddon. And since tactical nuclear weapons would always lead to strategic nuclear weapons, it seemed a silly idea

Just 8 years later the Russians tested the Tsar Bomba, the most powerful weapon ever created. The bomb in this video was equivalent to 15,000 tons of TNT. I know it's a joke but they actually made dozens of different types of nukes for artillery. Even down to 5 inch shells and smaller. The Russians too in even greater variety. There's even a nuke fired by a large grenade launcher (M28). At some point American battleships such as Missouri where equipped with nuclear shells for their main guns. And most submarines carried nuclear torpedoes. Including the Russian B-59 that almost used them once.

This idea that modern nukes are vastly more powerful than those of the early Cold War is one of those weird myths that just won't die. To put it in perspective, in 1976 the last B41 bomb was removed from service and removing that single weapon type reduced the size of the US deterrent by 12,500MT which is something like 80 times the size of the entire strategic deterrent today.

The shell used the same gun type design as the Hiroshima "Little Boy" bomb. The Enola Gay's B-29 crew were so afraid of crashing on take off and obliterating Tinian Island, that the bomb was not armed until after take off. By 1953, they had likely improved the safety of this type of warhead. It was used in other applications, like a 16 inch naval gun shell.

All i know is, they had external contact switches which they put into the bomb prior to dropping it. With these switches, the ignition circle and the control unit were active and before that, they only had "dead switches" in the plug holes so that the bomb wouldn't blow up on the airfield or right after the start. And it was designed to explode in 500...600 meters altitude (or approx. 1600... 2000 feet in America)
