Atomic Bent Chetler 120 | Long-Term Review

Спорт

In this long term ski review, I talk about my experience skiing the Bent Chetler 120 over the last three years. I’ve used them for freeride skiing on nice powder days and I did one freeride competition on it. I’ve also used it for shorter ski touring days and I will let you know what’s good and bad about it. If you need a pair in Europe here’s a good deal 🇪🇺 bit.ly/EU-Bent-Chetler120

Been using armada arv 116s last two seasons as a one ski quiver, it sounds pretty alike from how you describe the feel of them. It was quite surprising how fast I adjusted to feeling well on them on hard pack, but they do prefer playful riding rather than the big swooping turns at high speed, as you describe with the BCs too. I'd recommend people interested in that kind of ski to give it a go, as long as your knees can take it the width doesn't really have to be too much of an issue at all.

At 3:10 he mentions that wide skis are not good on hard pack, which is true and a good rule of thumb is you shouldn't ride anything wider then your knee as it will cause injury, but as long as you are a strong skier and have good mechanics you shouldn't have to worry about knee injuries too much.

I had the Bent Chetler 120 192cm 2016 for a season in Japan, and I can confirm the knee injury theory.. So just from skiing to much, no accident. Don't know if it is the 120mm underfoot though.

Asking what happens when Chris Benchetler and Eric Pollard ride and develop skies together is like asking what happens when Neil Armstrong & Buzz Aldrin get into an Apollo spacecraft. History is written and a new era begins. Both this and the Pollard line of skies are born out of the pure joy for skiing that corse the veins of their designers. Before I started riding this ski I’d compare the ski to the Line Bacons and Armada JJ in similar feel. Those are also fun playful but the Bentchetler is the biggest leap I’ve witnessed in my humble 35yrs of skiing. I mainly ride the Rockies and the peaks around Rossland & Nelson (Monashee & Selkirk ranges)This masterpiece of engineering can handle everything I’ve ever gotten my foolish, playful self into. Obviously fantastic in powder, but where it blows me away is the versatility. Today it rode two days of +90km/h beaten wind slab and held a respectable edge. According to my GPS I’ve clocked this in up to 99km/h on groomers (I love my wife too much and frankly am too sacred to take it above that). Yes it was squirmy and a little chattery at anything above +80km/h hard pack, but that is expected out of that massive rocker. The camber and side cut are dialed in quite nice to match the other characteristics. I’ve been riding the 2017 model with Guardian 16’s mounted @ factory. Can’t wait to get the new 2022 mounted with the Cast Pivot 15 binding in a few days! I can’t wait to be blown away by the 2022 if what you say is true.

I was thinking about buying them and mounting the binding almost true center, just few cm below, would that be a good idea and would they still perform in pow? @@loremipsumproductivityengi7552 they are exactly as he describes them. Way more playful than they “should be” but the rocker/camber/rocker profile helps there. They pivot like a dream. You gotta work em on hardpack for sure. Super carve-able on anything other than icy crap. Decent backcountry ski in great conditions. Not for an ultra high consequence mountaineering day where the surface is bulletproof.

After the 2013 and the 2016 modell, I just got the 2021 modell, which I mount with a look pivot 18/Cast touring binding. I can't wait for another 120cm of snow so I can finally ski it ;) If you are a fan of "old boys"-turns you will for sure not need such a ski. Actually nobody needs such a fat ski. But I love the Bent Chetler 120 for playing with the terrain, doing a few switch turns in the pow or nose butters but also going fast on steeper terrain. That said, I was always I fan of having my binding on powder skis close to the center and have my ski tips cutting under the snow surface. Again: Not everybody likes that. As you say in the video: You definately need work to keep the balance on this ski. Once you get used to it, its such a fun tool. The bent chetlers surprisingly handels most snow conditions pretty good. Only thing: The Bent Chetler could be just a little bit more easy to manuvre in steeper tree skiing terrain. But it's a big ski so I would not complain to much about that. Have fun on your Bents =)

Because I have used the 100s for freeriding. Three years ago was the first time I really skied powder with proper powder skies, but now the rental place where we always hire our stuff only has the bent Chetler 100s for freeriding and they don't feel as alive in powder like the previous skies they had. So is it worth buying the bent chetler 120s if I really want to have alive skis in the powder? Cheers

Hey Elias. I live in Alaska and have skied the Salomon Shift bindings for 2 seasons now. I love the bindings for the most part but CAN confirm that while touring if you accidentally bump your skis together they will drop the brake while touring uphill. Meaning that you need to take your ski off and then reset the back of the ski. I also wish there was a higher riser for steep tours. I'm a mostly resort skier and snowmobile skier most days so it doesn't bother me but if you spent a LOT of time touring uphill you could get pretty fed up with the brakes deploying while skinning uphill. Just my 2 cents.

It's definitely not as playfull and "easy to turn" as the Faction CT 2.0 i own but i was really impressed by the stability. You could really go down a piste full send mode an it runs over everything. Could it be that these characteristics are due to the small Rocker and long radius (it's like 30m)? Or is my sens for skiing weird? 😅

Awesome review. I just ordered this pair when you video came out and was glad it confirmed I made the right choice! I also have the 123 model and 100 model, so clearly I had to fill the gap with the 120 model. One question. Despite you videos about mounting points, I'm still not sure where to mount the Shifts.. It will be mostly used for freeriding with a bit of touring, I don't ski switch but I do love to smear and slarve my turns. Would you say -2 from factory would be the way to go? If it helps; my BC 100 are mounted +1 from factory and I feel like re-mounting them a little forward, like +2/+3 from factory. My BC 123 (2013) are mounted about -6 from center and I feel like mounting them a little more forward as well..

I am 192 cm and new to Backcountry/Powder/Touring but am pretty experienced on the slope. I want to buy a new ski and focus more on freeriding / touring in powder in the backcountry but still want to ski on slopes from time to time. Probably not aiming on walking up mountains for 4+ hours but i could see myself going up a lift and then hiking for 1-2 hours to a spot in the backcountry. I am more a playful skier and like to do butters so im not going to straight line down in full speed. Would you say that the Bent Chetlers 120 are good for this purpose? Note that these are going to be my only ski so i would not like to buy a 100% touring ski.

If anyone here wants to have a ski that is playful, good for beginners and intermediate skiers, I can only recommend the Line Sir Francis Bacon. They are very playful thanks to a medium-soft flex (symmetrical!) and a 16m radius at 184 (I think I’m not too sure tho). If you want to learn tricks and butters it’s a Great Ski. Wanna go in a powder day? Well it’s 108 underfoot you won’t have a problem with that. A small bonus that Line have it as well is the Convex Tip and Tails which rather than cut through snow, surf through snow. And yes you feel a difference if you compare it to a ski that has similar width and flex.

If you only ski northeast trees your probably better off with something narrower. If you already bought them, here in CO we typically mount these -3 or -4 for touring, but our BC skiing is almost always in powder and pretty open slopes. I would say -1 or -2 for a combination of float and nimble movement through the trees

Yeah that's true about the knee injury because it needs more angle and force to get on edge it has more distance/angle to travel before engaging those edges. Also apparently if your ski is 120 you have more surface area than average snowboards! (Got that from an instructor in Canada)

Daily driver for 4 years with two pair of skis. but both pair of skis i've ripped the bindings out of in teh 2nd year. They're my favorite ski to ride but don't expect them to last long, the soft wood core just doesn't hold up to lots of ski days

  • @klubstompers

Ive ridden these, and they are very similar to my favorite ski of all time the Line Eric Pollard's Opus 144-118-141 192cm 17 m radius. Nice side cut, has camber, slight rocker on tip and tail, super playful, and can charge like a high school girl with daddy's credit card. These ski's can go and do anything, but you have to show em who's boos, or they will eat you up. Love throwing phat skis on edge on hard pack, feels so nice. www.skimag.com/.image/t_share/MTQzNTgyNzgzNjcxMzc5MzQz/line_mrpollardsopus_2013-14_mjpg.jpg
