"Atomic Attack" (1954) Amazing Cold War Nuclear War TV-Movie

Ойын-сауық

On May 18, 1954, The Motorola Television Hour presented Atomic Attack, a gripping portrayal of a suburban family struggling to survive after a nuclear bomb is dropped on U.S. soil. Fifty miles away from a decimated New York City, the Mitchell family are trapped inside their house, with looters and poisonous radioactive fallout right outside their door. As the hours drag on, their nerves are stretched to the breaking point...as they realize that not all of them will survive this holocaust.
Atomic Attack was produced in conjunction with the Office of Civil Defense, and opens with the disclaimer, "The happenings that will now follow on your screen might be taking place in a suburban community some 50 miles from New York...but are entirely fictitious, of course."
Directed by Academy Award-nominated filmmaker Ralph Nelson ("Requiem for a Heavyweight," "Lilies of the Field," "Charly") and features an all-star cast including versatile actress Phyllis Thaxter (Clark Kent's adopted mother in "Superman: The Movie"), Patty McCormack ("The Bad Seed "(1956), and a young Walter Matthau!

I was 2 years old when this movie was made. I lived through the greater part of the "Cold War". People are all the same, when, it comes to "the bottom line". Americans are less caring of their fellow people now more than ever before. Less educated about "reality". Continued delusions ( active intentions of mind control) are strongly at work In America. The media and those ultra wealthy, that own and control the media, ARE "The ME Generation". Only caring about themselves, Wealth & Power. Same for politicians and other people "Of Power. My childhood memories are good. At Christmas Time, people were mellower, less stressed and kind to all. It was a time when people felt good. No More. There is far more than Religions at work here. Religions being more dangerous than any "Atomic Bomb". In many ways, for me atleast, the 1950s and early 1960s were the Best OF Times. Even with the Cold War in full force, people were different in a better way. Peace & Best Regards To All * I have seen this movie before. Thank You

I have watched this film before and I think 💭 it really shows the depth of thinking that the USA had towards the nuclear/Cold War era, it might be fictitious but you could see the reality of what could, and most people feared, would happen, one minute everything is post WWII prosperity and hope for the future and the next a blinding flash of light extinguishes the hopes and dreams of potentially the whole world, ok 👌 the acting is a bit OTT in places and hysterical in others, and I personally have to laugh @ 2:25+ when “Barbara” tells mother that she needs some things washed, and the reply from mother of “oh Barbara, today of all days when the MAID is out sick”, she just made me think about how much effort it would take mother, perhaps she would have to miss her lunch date at the country club or shopping with her girlfriends at the mall 🏬, or heaven forbid she might have to miss her bridge party at her besties house, doesn’t she have to much to do without having to wash and dry some things that her daughter needs, never mind mother, they will all have to be cancelled for quite some time.

Note the opening disclaimers? Recall as 20 years before this film, on the Radio Orson Welles fooled the WORLD with "War of the Worlds" on "live" radio. Note we Had and USED air raid shelters and alarms everyplace, everyone, all ages, trained regularly in the USA. I grew up ground ZERO same street as McDonald Douglas, next door to Rockwell Int, down the street from Boeng, and just about all aerospace production, with Long Beach Navl Base a decent bike ride away. We had air defence missile batteries within sight on every bit of hi ground. I never cared a "bit" I knew I would never see the flash. WWII EWO Air Crew Gramps owned him some "Motorola" stocks! Grama's family survived the 33 Long Beach earthquake and most WWII. Other Uncles involved too, one on the mighty Mo at armistice so they told me. Knew others involved with "Chrome Dome, and the Dew Line" My family's Dr Ethen Allen Norwalk Ca of THIS very films' time (before me) was working on the Manhattan Project prior and still practicing Medicine at 100+? in 2011for me and my family as "I questioned him" face to face about such things. Lord the "acting was ouch" shooting looters? Spot on! no one owned a geiger counter, everyone had arms, I still keep iodine ready. It's hard to watch the material, the message is spot on.

I agree, similar when we squeeze toothpaste out of the tube, can't put it back in, once that genie came out of the bottle we have to live in fear for a war over old men and greed over resources, sometimes senile and can't form a sentence and they have the buttons to launch us into a Nuclear winter where the living will envy the dead. As a kid this bothered me every day until I found Jesus Christ, now the fear of death is taken away but it was ridiculous, especially when at school we would have these drills, duck and cover, wow, those teachers must have thought we were that stupid and naive. Unreal ! ! ! Or did they? Today, my prayer is, I hope I'm at ground zero when it happens. 🤡world we live in these days.
