l would think that one of the other reasons to have a removable/replaceable head on the dart/spear would be the likelihood of damage to the point from misses. Much quicker to insert a new point than have to the whole dart down for repair when in the midst of a hunt. Good demo and discussion. I can only imagine what type of distance and velocity a strong, practiced hunter can obtain with efficient technique and a stone point with mass. Ah, the wonders of physics!

Random Button Pusher I agree about damaging the point when missing. I often hit rocks in the ground and just replace the fore-shaft when it breaks or wears down to much.

Well, button pusher and brother wolf, there are apples and oranges. Your atlatl and dart are modeled upon those from the basket weaver culture and Australia to a lesser degree. Older Paleolithic hunters used a quite different rig. First they hunted megalithic game. A mastodon might be twice the size of a modern elephant. An auroc over twice the size of our largest modern bison. Thus range was not desired, it was brute force penetrating power. A Clovis point is 5-6 times the size and weight of large arrow points. If you attached a Clovis point to your dart you would find that your dart was too flexible. The Paleolithic dart was heavy and two piece. Why? Because wood, not the stone points were scarce and valuable. We have known for years that hunters recovered points from game, sharpened them and reused them. But it’s only recently that it’s come to light that wood, especially long straight wood was very scarce. One might say that recovering the fore shaft was more important than the point to those hunters. So the shaft was two piece. A very heavy but section to transmit power to the lighter fore shaft and point. The end result was the ability to plunge a sharp point 3-4 feet into the chest of a large animal through hide, muscle and bone…from very close quarters, not from range. This also explains why most Paleolithic atlatl we find are of bone, not wood. We assumed it was that wood deteriorated long before bone. Thus skewing the type of artifacts that survive. That may be true, but no we realize there was not much wood to be had. Paleolithic hunters even made their homes not of wood but of bones and tusks and hide. One final point. The bow and arrow is as old as the atlatl, world wide. Some cultures used both, and some one or the other. They are after all tools each suited to slightly different uses but with some overlap. And so you may ask why the basket weavers of the arid SW chose to use the atlatl in the 12th-17th century while similar cultures farther east preferred the bow. The answer is suitable resources to make the tool, the local game it was used on, and perhaps a cultural preference held over from previous times. No offense intended. I strive to educate. Your into a complicated subject area. Fox out.

What state are you in? Here in Oregon I found out today that we can take coyote, rabbit, and exotic sheep? I don’t know what that means but I know what rabbits and coyotes are.

What creates that sound of wood hitting wood when thrown? Don't you hit the javelin with the thrower almost as soon as it's thrown? I'm asking because this has happened to me and many other people using this type of javelin thrower. If hunting at greater distances, this sound alone would scare the animal away.

When it’s a good throw The two pieces of wood do not slap together. If they are try, slowing down and holding the dark more firmly against the pin in the thrower, and see if that helps
