How to Make Copper Dart Points (Cane Dart Tutorial Part 2)

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Bob Berg shows how to make copper atlatl dart points by turning a flat triangle of copper into a sharp cone tip. This is similar to the methodology used by the Native Americans from the Keweenaw Peninsula.

The reason for a foreshaft is so that when the animal runs away through the brush they don't break your entire dart, causing you to have to make an entire new one. The foreshaft separates from the dart and if it breaks it is easier to replace.

He has a good point in a way though, practical application for most would be target or maybe small game/fish both of which a foreshaft probably isn't a real need and could actually be a hindrance.

I'll have to try my hand at making an atlatl from palmetto before that tutorial comes out. There's certainly no shortage of them here in Florida lol

I actually made 1 tip with an arrow adapter so I could use a real broadhead. And I made another one with I think cement nails filed down and hugged with pex pipe heated up with a heat gun.

I think that I heard that you use 16 gauge copper, if using steel, do you also use 16 gauge? If so, and with both, without spending $1000's of dollars, what tool do you use to cut your metal?

Exposure to a flow of compressed air will harden the copper also.

Bob's accent really sounds like he's from Scandi-America! The way he says "cone" - and a few other tiny little things... I'm guessing maybe somewhere in the Mon-Dak region, but maybe more NoDak... But, somewhere in there for sure! LOL The only thing missing, was an "Uff Da" and a "Ja, you betcha."

@@robertberg588 LOL - well, that's close enough to meet my personal standard for accent accuracy. You look like you would fit right in at a saloon in Minot, ND! To the point that I thought, 'Hmm, wonder if I know that guy, or someone that does know him..." It's a small territory. :) My great-grandfather came over from Norway in late 1800s.

im not 100 percent sure about copper, but with other metals the way you harden it is by heating it up and them dunking it in water and the way you anneal it is to heat it up and let it cool down just by itself

In a pinch, you could use ordinary modern hotmelt glue sticks, or pine resin, or even a bit of road tar.
