Atlantic-Crossing Movie

Friends, followers, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from www.HaveWindWillTravel.com! A real treat for you here, available for the first time to my entire audience: my two-hour movie from our trans-Atlantic. For those of you who are new, Phillip and I had the good fortune to be invited as part of a four-member crew to cross the Atlantic, sailing from Florida to France, this past June on a 46’ catamaran and I created my first full-length film documenting our journey. I thought it would be a great way to kick off Season Five of our KZread channel which will be all about our TRAVELs, with our biggest voyage of 2016!
When Captain Yannick first met me (which was around the same time he agreed to let me make this tremendous voyage with him, brave guy), he had no idea who I was really, the kind of videos I made, my audience or how I might portray him and his family on film and, because he has plans to produce video documentaries of his own someday, he initially asked that I not share the movie publicly on KZread. Now, after having watched many of my videos, particularly the movie itself, and with a better understanding of the purpose of my platform (i.e., to help share the realities and rewards of a cruising lifestyle) Yannick graciously granted my renewed request to let me share it with my entire audience, for free on KZread.
So, kick back, make some hot cocoa, round up the last of the Christmas treats and enjoy the show while Phillip and I explore the vast historic castles, churches and smoky cigar holes in Cuba and work to get videos to you all from this incredible adventure as well as my sail to Isla Mujeres, Mexico this past November and our upcoming sail to Miami in February for the Miami Boat Show (we hope to see some of you there!). Thank Captain Yannick for inviting Phillip and I on this incredible voyage and letting me share the experience with you: a crew of four on a 46’ foot catamaran, thirty days at sea across the Atlantic Ocean. The perfect way to kick-off HaveWindWillTravel 2017!

Exciting news! Captain Yannick and his family are now making videos of their own adventure on s/v Andanza. He and his family have sailed in northern Europe, crossed the Atlantic Ocean, and explored various islands in the Caribbean on their way to the states. Keep the adventure going by subscribing and following Yannick's channel at kzread.info/dron/dsWzTt-wKTUWoWcpcf6ISA.html.

Excellent work, all. I have a rule of thumb when it comes to filters…”When it doubt, swap it out!” The cost of a filter is so miniscule in comparison to everything else on the boat/car/truck/tractor. If it’s doing it’s job, it WILL get clogged, and fuel dilters get clogged because diesel tanks grow algae in them if steps aren’t taken OFTEN to prevent it. Shipyards and fuel docks are notorious for having massive algae blooms, especially in summer months. It happened in my company’s shop, we have to decommission our off-road diesel tank because it grew algae, and having it cleaned and re-coated is more than the taxes we pay on the fuel in 5 years…that’s an easy simple step to get rid of it, but it never would have happened if the fuel company driver had added the conditioner we provided for them. It literally is still sitting on top of the tank unopened.

Had planned on sailing along the coast down to the Caribbean, however being a geologist I could not help but notice that there is a lot of seismic activity going on in the plates along PR. Maybe the maiden voyage will be Bermuda or Nova Scotia!

I watched with such good feelings for you all. Emotion made my body shudder, at times, remembering my own seafaring adventures. I smiled, for all the things only those of us who have lived the magic, can feel; catching a glimpse of each other, that knowing magic in the eyes saying - yup, there goes another friend, who has been where we have been, and knowing - truly learning - that the ocean | the sky | the magical sunrises and sunsets, bending around the curved earth - knowing that in that grand nirvana, we are subject to her will; her desires, her mercies - and if we respect her, she will bless us with new and endless journeys. Yours was beautiful to watch and experience. Thank you for being you, and letting me come along for the ride. Job well done!

This is one of the best KZread videos I've seen in a LONG time. Loved the format -- excellent variety of where you're at, what you're doing, slice of life, etc. Your voiceover REALLY sells the video. Glad you had a voiceover instead of text-based captions. My wife and I will be watching this one again. THANK YOU!!

This crazy couple was bothering every one on board, waking up everyone to see sun rising, swim on a dragging rope in the middle of the ocean. After watching it to the end I loved you couple. Nice job on video.

Annie and Phillip, just finished the video and man what an adventure! Thanks for the time spent putting this movie together and sharing. I have to say that while this crew was thrown together in such a short time, performed exceptionally well together. I will admit that I shed a tear or two when those jets screamed by and seeing the joy on the captains face was priceless. Thanks again and I look forward to your future adventures in Cuba.

Hey Tim! Thanks for watching. We're so glad you enjoyed the film. The moment those jets screamed by was definitely a highlight of the trip for all of us, especially Yannick. What a cool thing, huh? And what a great welcome to French shores. Thanks for watching and commenting. We're certainly proud of this movie and enjoy sharing it with folks who are interested in crossing an ocean.

Just finished watching the movie and it was simply spectacular. You did such a marvelous job of capturing the high and low points and bringing us right along with you as if we were actually sailing with the crew on the boat. Your dedication to the craft of producing these fine videos shines through. I have been following along with you for quite some time now, including your DeLorme posts on your Cuban adventure. I can't wait until we all get to share that with you as it sounds like you have been having a simply marvelous time. I hope you had a Merry Christmas and want to with you a Happy New Year. Fair Winds and Following Seas as you continue on your path to new adventures.

I'm glad you enjoyed every aspect of the trip (as I do believe the "lows" are a very important part to capture and share). As well as the highs! The dolphins! The flyover! France! Oui, oui! Thanks again. Your comment means a lot. I'll be starting work on the Cuban voyage videos very soon!

Funny you should mention that. So many people told us before we left that we would be "converted" to cats from the voyage. I have an article coming out in SAIL Magazine on this topic soon, so I don't want to spoil it, but I can safely say (Yannick already knows this if he's "listening") we were in no way converted. We love the feel of a monohull, the slicing of its single line through the water, even the heeling. While there are many advantages to a catamaran (space, speed, comfort) we just love monohulls. Period. Thanks for watching!

so good to see the wrench in your pocket... I see a lot of sailing vlogs where the ladies aboard are good sailors, but so few where they do serious mechanical work. I envy you getting to do this. safe journeys. I hope Yannick was able to get his boat repaired once he was home.

You all are definitely 'real' sailors, now. That was an amazing trip, and since you traveled more than 1,000nm, non-stop, you're qualified to join ---either as crew or on your own boat --- OCC (Ocean Cruising Club, which I believe was started in UK). Membership fee is reasonable and they fly special "flying fish" flags, as I recall...With 9 days in the Azores, did Yannick also have the spinnaker re-stitched? Having a sewing machine onboard can sometimes be as essential as a watermaker or autopilot but you all had an amazing journey and thanks for sharing...

  • @HaveWindWillTravelcom

    @HaveWindWillTravelcom

Hi Don! Thanks. Folks have told us about the OCC before. We've considered it, have just been so busy planning for or voyaging more to really focus on whether we need the benefits it affords (as we do try to watch our pennies). The Atlantic-crossing was definitely an eye-opening, incredible adventure. Capt. Yannick did not have the spinnaker re-stitched while in the Azores. The starboard engine, auto-pilot and generator completely occupied him there! ; ) Thanks for watching!

...and we did have a sewing machine:) The almighty Sailrite Ultrafeed. Just not a priority and to be honest a personal lack of knowledge on how to use it on such a light fabric as the spinnaker's...
