Atlanta Hawks Announcer Suffers On-Air Medical Emergency

Sportscaster Bob Rathbun suffered an on-air medical emergency during an Atlanta Hawks basketball game. Rathbun slowly slumped in his chair and then started to convulse while commentating on the game. As Rathbun loses consciousness, someone off-camera reaches in to help him as the camera cuts away. His rep said in a statement to Inside Edition that the 68-year-old announcer "briefly lost consciousness on the court." “Emergency medical professionals on-site quickly treated Rathbun for dehydration,” the statement continued.

@@potatohead3323 I've had two when I was 16, one in January 2017 and the second in April 2017. The first one I was at lunch at school with my friends. I remember I only took one bite out of my cheeseburger and I was talking to one of my friends and from there I don't remember anything. When I woke up, it felt a dream, I couldn't remember anything for at least 5 minutes or so. I was terrified as soon as the paramedics told me I suffered one when I woke up. I wanted to cry as it had never happened to me before. Then the second one, I was in history class, we were shutting down our laptops after some online work becuase the teacher was about to give a lesson and from there I must have blacked out. I woke up in the ambulance and from there I wad taken to the hospital. It was very scary. I wondered if I would be ok. I was going through some anxiety and depression for the first 5 monts of 2017 and I would have some restless nights sometimes so Idk if that may have contributed in anyway to the convulsions. But thank god It's been nearly 5 years since I last had on, since the second one I haven't had anymore and I'm almost 22. I hope this poor man is okay. I didn't know dehydration can also cause seizures. Scary 😨🙏

I have epilepsy and when you wake up aware after convulsing you feel so embarrassed. I can’t imagine waking up seeing it on tv. Poor man. I hope they figure out why this happened hoping for healthy speedy recovery Bob❤️❤️❤️🙏

I’ve witnessed 2 grand mal seizures and it is frightening. It makes me sad that someone would feel embarrassed about that but I understand. I can guarantee you that nobody who witnesses such an episode feels anything other than great empathy for that person. Let’s just keep embarrassment for those times when we act like total jerks 🤗

Don't feel embarrassed about something like that. When I was a kid I was the second worst medical case in western NY. I would pass out and nobody knew why. Till they did a tilt table test and my heart stopped. And found out I have what's called vasovagal syncope. Not exactly the same as a seizure. But it would cause me to straight up pass out all the time. My blood pressure wasn't regulating itself right. My heart rate was 30 to 40 beats per minute and when I would sleep it dropped to 20 to 30. The doctors used to joke with me and say "well you have no heart rate so you must be dead". I became such a liability at school from just randomly dropping, I had to be homeschooled for awhile because the school didn't want me there. Long story short, I stopped caring what other people thought about my medical condition. I even defied all odds and overcame that health issue and was later able to join the Army and serve for almost 10 years. The doctors told me if I didn't take a beta blocker all my life that I would need a pace maker by my late 20s. I don't know how I defied the odds and overcame it all but I'm grateful. Occasionally I'll get symptoms that warn me I might pass out, like extreme dizziness. But I haven't blacked out since my teen years. Because I'll know I need to lay flat or I'm passing out. Just don't feel bad about something you can't control. It's not worth getting upset over.

I have epilepsy myself and it's very uncomfortable when you're aware of it happening. I had one in my basement and my eyes were still working and I still knew where I was but all you can do is talk to yourself in your mind and wait out the seizure.
