The woman who gave the deputy that apartment number after saying she wasn’t sure where the argument was coming from should be punished. This was basically swatting.

She failed to relay the information properly so she is responsible. We also have to note the young man opened the door with a firearm in his hand. Cops responded and he lost his life. Sad. Could have been prevented.

Answering the door with a gun is not normal or reasonable for anything. Even if it wasn't cop and somebody was there to harm him and opening the door is just opening himself up to be hurt. He really thought it was somebody else he should have went back into his apartment got into a tactical position and called the police himself. And if they came through the door he had the right to defend himself. But no he didn't do anything like that.

This was very bad policing. 1) The “witness” says she doesn’t know where the argument happened, but then gives an exact apartment number. This should have been a red flag for the deputy, and he should have questioned her more before assuming he was at an apartment where a domestic dispute was happening. Despite what the sheriff says in the press conference it is the wrong apartment because the man is home alone. The woman who called 911 described loud arguing between a man and woman and a woman screaming. No such things happening inside that apartment. 2) After opening the door resident complies when the deputy asks him to step back, but the deputy panics and just starts shooting when he sees the gun even though the airman didn’t have the gun raised. Deputy doesn’t yell “drop the gun” until after he shoots SIX TIMES!! The resident is legally armed in his own home and it is not a crime to hold a gun when answering your door in Florida. The resident has no way to be sure it’s police until he opens the door. 3) The deputy gives no warning before shooting. Again, it’s not a crime to be armed or to hold a weapon in your own home in Florida. No crime committed, and yet the deputy fires his weapon six times before ordering the resident to drop his weapon. Again..NO CRIME committed, no obligation to disarm himself. The airman did not do anything wrong. This was murder. Should be prosecuted as 2nd degree murder, not manslaughter.

Capability, opportunity and intent. The first two were present and certainly no intent. During my days in the Air Force police academy, they drilled us hard. Just because there's a weapon present that does not mean shoot. Everyone flunks the F.A.T.S. machine, but eventually we all pass it to the point where we can identify the 3 elements present to use deadly force. I love the BLUE but this dude, this deputy seriously got trigger happy and went beyond the "John Wayne" syndrome spectrum. Plain and simple. This was a bad shoot. My condolences to the SrA. family.

@robertbobinis ... All it takes for a cop responding to a "disturbance" call is for one of them to call out "gun!" That's an automatic notice to empty a clip. In this case, we see the gun in the young man's hand. Very bad decision on his part. Bad decision on the part of the dispatcher who left out "caller unsure of apartment number!"

A lot of people when they are at home are armed when answering the door because of all the bs going on, and his weapon was pointed down, and they were at the wrong apartment to begin with. It was straight up murder.. that officer jumped into view & said step back, then he shot the victim 5-6 times & THEN said drop the gun. That man was legally armed in his home, his firearm was at his side, pointing straight down & at no time did he move his arm/firearm up & present a danger to the officer. Criminals have been pounding on peoples doors & claiming to be police for years now. They do this in order to trick & force people to open their doors up. "Drop the gun" is supposed to comes before the 6 shots. If this Airman heard the Deputy identify himself, answering the door with a gun in your hand was suicidal. If this Deputy couldn't get an address right, Walmart is always hiring greeters.

If you're not expecting someone you just can't assume the cops are at your door by hearing a voice saying 'this is the police'. The question: could he confirm it through a peep hole or doorbell cam. If not, that's a problem.

Has anyone else noticed that the woman who called the police in the first place heard arguing, didn't know where it was coming from, yet gave the officer the apartment number. I remember back a few years ago my three children and i were having a conversation a little after i had got home from work. Suddenly our front door was banged open and several cops with guns were in our space. We were all flabbergasted! They had guns drawn and began looking around and searched even us. That encounter too was a mistake made by the police. I shudder to think what could have happened to my children, if like this Airman, they would have accidently been shot. O M G!!!

I don't see why the officer could not have shouted, "Drop The Gun" before shooting. He had the drop on the kid, the kids gun was pointing down. It looks to me the cop was alone? If so he could have been nervous & rushed his judgment. If the cop had another officer with him (who had the camera?) it seems to me it was still a rush to judgement on the shooting officers part, unless the officers training taught him to shot first, & ask questions later... Hum.

Because he heard the cop beating on his door without announcing himself. When he went to look through the peep hole, the officer was hiding off to the side. So he grabbed a gun. Then the officer knocked, finally announced police but still hid from view.

I will agree with the police officer action IF the GUN was pointed at him! in this case it was NOT it was pointing DOWN, for safety reason. The killer cop instead of saying " DROP YOUR GUN DOWN " he instantly SHOOTS ! which is against POLICE TRAINING AND POLICY NO WARNINGS < NOTHING JUST SHOT, MURDERING AN INNOCENT MAN! you can't be a COP if you are not BRAVE! if you gonna shoot anyone who makes you panic because you're a coward and always wanted to MURDER SOMEONE, then dont be A COP , let my GRANDMA be a cop because shes fragile , weak and cant defend herself, so shes gonna shoot at anyhing without any reason because shes SCARED !!

so you are saying that the cop should have waited to see if the gun would have been pointed at him first before drawing his weapon ? you saw for yourself how fast a gun can be fired on target after drawing. This is just a sad case of Natural selection. He should not have opened the door wielding the gun. it should have been concealed and holstered. If he thought that the person at the door was a threated he could have done more investigation on his part to figure out if it was truly a police or not before opening the door with the gun in his hand

A lot of Florida cops are incompetent.

Certainly a sad set of circumstances. However, why would someone respond to a knock on the door, by someone identifying himself as from the sheriffs dept., while armed with a gun ? I don’t get it.

Service members should be safe at home. This is ridiculous. Veterans aren’t respected either. Meanwhile ELECTED government officials prioritize foreign nationals and foreign countries. SMH. Expecting and demanding Americans serve a disloyal government 👎🏻.

Because first knock there was no announcement of who it was and from what it appears the officer had turned his body some 90 degrees to where we cannot see the front entirety of the door let alone the peep hole, so then you retrieve your gun and you hear additional knocks and again look but now its not blocked, and then a third time which you open door

Service member deserves justice , not administrative leave and going to another state to be a police officer.
