Synopsis: In the riveting Athlete A, filmmakers Bonni Cohen and Jon Shenk delve into the unchecked abuse inside the world of elite competitive gymnastics. Equal parts devastating and inspiring, the film follows the IndyStar reporters as they reveal the extensive cover-up and culture of cruelty that was allowed to thrive within elite gymnastics, the attorney fighting the institutions, and most importantly, the brave whistle-blowers who refuse to be silenced. Athlete A is produced by Jen Sey and Julie Parker Benello.

This was possibly the best documentary I have ever scene. There was so much information to cover and they did an amazing job with it, covering the story in a way that accurately and fairly represented the story and everything these women went through.

Though I have never been a gymnast, I could relate to these women on a personal level as an abuse survivor myself having never reported it and letting it fester inside me for decades. These gymnasts are incredibly brave. I found this documentary difficult to watch for the pain they endured (trust me I cried a lot) but also cathartic and hopeful for the future for women and girls.

This just shows how broken the American system is. and how bad are those parents, they are willing to sacrifice their kids for a piece of medal! that scene of injured young Gymnastic kid forced to do the 2nd jump by his coach, and then he started to crawl brought tears to my eyes, they are animals. Now I understand what Simone Biles said when she said it's not about her anymore, its not like they are having fun, they are just soldiers trying to fulfill their family's dream recruited when they were young.

@@modmutha8608 Yeah, 100%, sorry for calling them animals, animals won't do that to their children, they are "monsters". I've seen a lot of sad movies in my life, this is one of the saddest movies I've ever seen, and since it's not a movie but real-life footage then it made it even sadder, I still can't get it out from my head after 3 days since I watched it. It's not just sad but makes you mad and you can't get the anger out from your mind. I watched "At the Heart of Gold 2019" after this one which explains thing more and the story of the girl with her father broke my heart even more.

All the ingredients were there for sexual abuse, but also corruption and inhumane treatment of their athletes: the cruelty culture brought in by the Romanian coaches, the big money flowing in, the top executive collusion with top powers, the cover up for sexual abusers as long as they do their job and get paid nothing or very little, etc etc. It's all there. And I bet in many other big institutions all over the world the same thing happens. The Catholic Church is an example, but many more. It's embedded in a soulless system

Really good documentary with brave young ladies/women. I struggle to understand why Maggie's parents did not report it to the police/external to gymnastics UNTIL she didn't make the Olympic team months later, if she made the team would they say nothing?! By that point they were well aware.

I'm sorry, but many of you parents of these young victims, totally failed your daughters. Why on earth would you allow your kid to be in a place where parents aren't allowed? That's just insane. Maggie Nichols parents were especially troubling to me. They hear their daughter may have been molested, and they don't call the cops?? They don't rush down to the ranch and get their daughter? I just can't fathom people like this. Their daughter was just a prop so they can ride on her coat tails to fame. FAIL!!!

Yes and No. A lot of them didn't know what he was doing was NOT a medical procedure. Many of them were so young, 14-18 and never had sexual experience, so when your nice Doctor is telling you he HAS to check and see if anything is wrong down there. They believed him. Many came forward, but USA Gymnastics would silence them and tell them, they were handling it. Basically telling Gymnast's and Family, that what DR. Nassar was doing was a medical procedure. He even had made up video's on why he did this. Many were so abused by the coaches in USA Gymnastics already, that they were already scared to even speak about it. So many older gymnasts were sent death threats and hate online, just coming forward.

I have a little trouble with the synopsis of this doc on NF indicating that journalists should for some reason be lauded for "exposing" this. I've been in journalism for a few decades in major league and major D-1 markets. There's what you know, and what you choose to report. Journalists knew about this LONG before they "exposed" it. To be fair, I'll put it this way. If you were a bona fide gymnastics journalist, specializing in it as well as maybe a handful of other sports (since gymnastics isn't going to keep you busy enough), you knew about this and said nothing until you had cover by other, more ethical journalists pushing the issue. If you DIDN'T know about this, you were not an actual gymnastics journalist. There was no such thing as a bon fide, gymnastics beat reporter covering the sport who just stumbled upon this scandal and immediately began putting the narrative together.
