Athlean-X's Ridiculous Fat Loss Advice

Here's an example of why you probably shouldn't take fat loss advice from Athlean-X. Jeff Cavaliere ultimately promotes unrealistic body fat standards and in a recent post he has his "Athlean range" at 5-10% body fat. The vast majority of guys will NOT be able to maintain 6% body fat, 8% body fat or pretty much any body fat below 10% on a consistent basis. I don't care which Athlean-X workout or Athlean-X diet you follow, it's just not sustainable unless you're a genetic outlier or using PED's. You can definitely have a lean physique, but there's a big difference between a "lean body" and a "shredded body". Try to take your body fat percentage too low and you'll be setting yourself up for a wide variety of physical and mental side effects.

    He literally said that diet is not for everybody. You are copying and pasting one part of what he said in taking it out of context. Usually I like you and I'm with you but on this I'm not you are on some bull crap this time. Watch the whole video and he expressly says this. You my friend are trying to defame somebody and you know it. This is clickbait. And I know it is because I've watch ath for a while now. You literally took what he said out of context because you didn't even watch the full thing I bet. Naughty very shameful. You should take this down or you should make an apology video and make it right. Watch the full video and tell me I'm wrong. Strike one. Fool me once shame on you fool me twice shame on me if it happens again I'll never watch one of your videos ever again.

    I learned from a gym trainer that a good body fat range was 10-15% because going under 10% decreased strength, like you mentioned. Going under 10% is for when you temporarily want to look your best in show or at the beach.

  • @CertifiedPsychonaut

    @CertifiedPsychonaut

    Жыл бұрын

    Well hes not actually wrong but I’d like to tweak a bit. Depending on the individual it could even be 12% minimum. The reason for this is mostly a shift in your hormones. In calorie deprivation one would bump up cortisol to break down muscle into simple sugar. This also has a negative effect on testosterone production, sleep, hypertophy… Then fat is the base molecule of testosterone. Cholesterol is converted into a long cascade of androgens that eventually leads to testosterone. So low fat=low material energy for test production Fat also creates aromatase, an enzyme to convert testosterone into estrogen.

    I think Jeff needs to keep that in mind more than anyone else. He's making KZread videos, the majority of his viewers are going to be average folks, not athletes. Giving athlete advice to people who aren't athletes is dangerous, especially when it comes to body fat percentages, as just losing a tonne of weight to hit a specific number is not healthy for anybody. That's not to say he advocates for that stuff, it's to say that Jeff misses the mark sometimes with his approach on KZread specifically.

    As predicted, many fanboys are now claiming that I "took his video out of context". There is nothing in the video where he "recommends against 5-10% body fat". He shows the 1-4% zone and says not to go there (as if anyone actually cuts to 1-4% body fat) and then says "we need to veer toward these healthier ranges" and waves his hand over the 5-10% zone. Sure, he mentions that it's EASIER to stay above 10%, but that's not the same thing as "recommending against it". What I'm telling you is that not only is going below 10% "harder" - it's flat out IMPOSSIBLE for the vast majority of you on any sort of ongoing basis and will be harmful to your physical and mental health if you make that your goal. People think the purpose of a video like this is to "attack Jeff", when in reality I'm genuinely trying to help you so that you don't develop this obsessive "leaner is better" mentality. If he WASN'T promoting those physiques as a realistic, attainable level then there would be NO reason to list "Athlean Range" above them with his logo. (Actually there is a reason, and it's because it associates his brand with it.) If he truly cared about his audience and wanted to be accurate, then he would list it more along the lines of 1-4% as unrealistic/dangerous, 5-10% as the extremely lean outlier zone, 11-15% as lean but sustainable, and 16-20% as still within the healthy range. Some of you guys need to recognize that there are ways of communicating things without outright saying them. When you place your logo above a given body fat range/physique type, it implies that people can achieve that result by following your programs/advice. Maybe YOU don't personally see it that way, but I can guarantee you that's how the masses will perceive it. He also posted the chart on Instagram ( instagram.com/p/CRu6uNCs2Ab ) and the ONLY thing the caption says is that he recommends you stay above 5% body fat with no other context or disclaimers. If you DON'T think that's flat out misleading or that I'm misrepresenting the inaccuracy/potential harmful effects of pushing those extremely lean physiques as being normal or expected, I strongly advise that you unsubscribe from me and stick to Jeff's videos instead and I wish you the best of luck. Additional Note: Here's another article from his website where he describes the chart: athleanx.com/articles/body-fat-percentage-where-are-you-at-and-whats-your-goal Read this description of "11-12% Body Fat" and then try to tell me that he isn't promoting excessive leanness: "In this range, you may see some abdominal definition if, for example, you want to oil yourself up and shine a bright light at yourself like this guy did. But who wants to walk around all slimy all the time?" Once again, a true 11-12% body fat is leaner than 99%+ of the population and even that range will be challenging for most to maintain. To speak negatively about it is completely absurd.

Cuz he's made at least 4-5 more such videos, where he *does* say that it was *his* personal goal; he doesn't really advocate going below 10-12% & that he had to sacrifice a lot for his so-called 5-7% body fat (which he too takes with a healthy pinch of salt)... Just sayin'... P.S.: Agree with the rest of your video/comments...

    There is absolutely NOTHING in that video where he says to only go below 10% for a "temporary period". He strongly advises against "1-4%" (who the hell actually cuts to 1-4%?) and then says "we want to veer toward these healthier ranges" and waves his hand over the 5-10% level. If he wasn't promoting those as realistic attainable goals then there would be NO reason to label 5-10% as the "ATHLEAN RANGE" with his logo above it. Well actually there is a reason, and it's because it associates his brand with those physiques and helps to promote his programs. He also posted the chart on Instagram and in the caption it simply says "sub 5% is not recommended". ( instagram.com/p/CRu6uNCs2Ab ) If Jeff actually cared about his audience (or maybe he really is just out to lunch when it comes to body fat percentages) he would not haphazardly post stuff like this that is very obviously misleading.

    So i rewatched the whole vid cuz Sean was clapping back in the comments asking for receipts and i wanted to call his bluff and heres what i got: Jeff says 1-4% is unattainable and unsustainable here: 2:30 He then points to all preceding ranges to be healthier and specifically highlights 10%-19% ranges to be more forgiving ones here: 2:46 He also kinda implies that 8%-10% would be the optimal goal throughout the video and jesse out right says it is here: 7:32 Overall, Jeff literally never directly tells you where you should be. He hints on where he would personally get most people to be in an optimal setting but for the most part he lets the viewer decide where they want to be. Thats why he is kinda showing them all the ranges. I think whats meant to be the main take away is to acknowledge and set a goal no matter the body fat % its at. Tl;dr: sean kinda grasped for straws when trying to say jeff has bad fat loss advice. Tbh i kinda think he either misinterpreted it or was aiming for pseudo clout from knocking one of the greats

    ADDITIONAL NOTES: I'm sure there will be at least a handful of comments from disgruntled Athlean-X fans, but it is what it is.⁣ I'm giving you hard facts here with the intention of helping, and if you don't like it, well, it's going to be your own problem in the long run.⁣ ⁣ Jeff has an absolutely massive platform and to casually promote shredded physiques in the 5-10% body fat range as being some kind of normal "healthy/athletic" state is straight up misleading and harmful to a lot of viewers.⁣ ⁣ There is a very small subset of people who can sustain that kind of condition year round, but for the overwhelming majority it's absolutely, positively unrealistic. Plain and simple, full fucking stop.⁣ ⁣ You can diet your face off and get there for a brief period, but the wide range of side effects you'll almost certainly experience (extreme hunger, low energy, decreased strength, worsened mood, lower quality sleep, reduced or even non-existent libido, not to mention the whole psychological body image side) will inevitably cause you to rebound back soon enough.⁣ ⁣ I've done it, and it's not pleasant. Even at 8-9% body fat and doing everything possible to mitigate the side effects, I felt miserable.⁣ ⁣ 10% is likely going to be the absolute minimum for most as an ongoing condition (a true 10% is VERY lean), and more like 12% plus for the majority. The truth is that even 12% is leaner than 99% of the population and NOT easy for most to permanently maintain.⁣ ⁣ But so many have been brainwashed by online fitness culture that unless they or the online fitness personalities they follow have a diced six pack they consider it "fat".⁣ ⁣ Don't get me wrong - this does NOT mean you can't achieve an impressively lean physique. I'm not trying to discourage anyone, but it's important to be realistic and to consider your HEALTH in the process.⁣ You can be lean, but just understand that there's a difference between "lean" and "shredded". Most people's perception of "lean" has been so ridiculously altered by online fitness content, and these bogus "body fat charts" definitely don't help.⁣

    Over the last year I’ve been listening and borrowing from all over the place. Find what works for you. Whatever diet it is doesn’t matter. As long as you can sustain it and it’s not in an insane amount of calorie surplus. Whatever exercises you can do without injuries in a program is just fine. Sub what’s not physically possible with something that targets the same area or even break it down to several exercises if needed. Maybe I’m just old and remember what’s it like not having ALL the information come from 1 place. Utilize the sources to your advantage. From 210 to a lean 185 at 15-20% body fat is sustainable for me. I don’t even follow a rigid program anymore. Just target muscle groups 5 times a week. 45 min to an hour of cardio a week. No longer an athlete or in the military but I’m fit and feel better than when I was

    The #1 tip is to have planned and structured diet, because the only way for your body to burn fat is to use it as energy. Basically, you need to eat below your energy maintenance level (in terms of calories) and your fat cells will be used to compensate the missing energy (calories). That's how your body works. There are other things to consider as well, such as hormonal status, diseases... but caloric deficit is a must. You have a lot of online helpers like website Dietarize for example. Losing weight is just a simple math, really...

Its also about ramping up your metabolism.. Eating small portions, regularly Having a low carb high protein diet with plenty of good fats to help testosterone... Building muscle of which the body must feed Eating energy rich foods at. Time of day they will be used rather than stored Just saying having a deficit i feel misses some key points... The more deficit you have the better your body becomes at holding on to fat I could eat shit meal once a day let's say create a calorie deficit Id be skinny in a sence but id have some lovely fat deposits and id look like shit

    This just popped up in my feed, don’t know why. Yes, Jeff sells programs and supplements and he also regularly releases free videos and gives good sound advice in his videos. He says in that video that the sub 5 on the male side is extreme and then goes on to say you’re probably going to have discomfort and hate being on the low end. He also points out on the women’s side that the 10% is unhealthy. I think the “Athlean range” is what you can expect if you did his program and stuck to a good diet and training regiment. But besides that being on the board he didn’t try and sell his programs or supplements at all. He’s basically the top guy as far as KZread fitness goes and so he’s a good target for clicks and traffic. Seems like youtubers have to shit on people and goods to get clicks these days (not saying this is your M.O.). I really like Jeff and have watched him for years.
