@ashoftomorrow I see it differently! 1. Ragnar may check how faithful to his religion Athelstan was by offering him to sleep with them! So he wanted to know if he can trust him! And it was also pretty common viking thing ask the person to sleep together! 2. Ragnar was baptized to trick them and get into Paris and conquer it!!! I don't get how people don't see this!

@@SVETOGOR1 It wasn't about testing him. He was truly asking him, twice. As for the baptism, you could argue that it was only to trick the people, but keep in mind two things: 1. Ragnar was still on the verge of death. Even after the attack, Bjorn worried he may still die because of his wounds. Ragnar must have known his own condition. 2. Ragnar was outside in the rain, talking to Athelstan, wishing he was there. When he saw a vision of him and then it disappeared, Ragnar had a break down and begged him: "Don't abandon me." Later the next day, he asked to be baptized in order to see Athelstan again. Even if it was also a trap, there is *still* evidence that he also truly wanted to be baptized in order to have the chance to see Athelstan, if he did in fact die from his wounds. Vikings did sleep with men too, but only if they were on top, as it was considered unmanly otherwise. It's not like Ragnar was the 1st Viking on the show asking to sleep with the same sex. In a deleted scene, Lagertha, Aslaug and Ragnar sleep together, and Floki, Torstein and Helga sleep together. It is true that there are some relationships that are just platonic and that's it. But there are some where the possibility is very much open to be more.

@@holdenketron272 that's fandom for you. at least there's people out there who are enthusiastic enough to look deeper. but these shippers are not fish in land looking for sea. athelstan and ragnar's relationship is more than just the 'traditional friendship', and also more than the 'traditional romantic'. ragnar's love was not sexual, yes, but making it as friendship underestimates their relationship. i think their relationship was more of a 'selfless love', the purest of love. though if you find that it's friendship, then you are entitled to your opinion. cause i honestly don't see why it isn't friendship either! but because i think so does not i mean i can admonish other interpretations. they're not looking into it that much, they're not fish in land looking for water, they are people willing to dig deep, and for this instance, the ground is soft. people can enjoy this relationship in any way. besides, they're fictional characters (based on real life people but still).

Without a doubt, Ragnar was NEVER the same after Aethelstan died. So sad to see how one event could lead to so much heartbreak.

I genuinely believe Ragnar sort of went "mad" with grief. Like Achilles or Alexander. Ever after Athelstan died, everything Ragnar did was, in one way or another, about Athelstan. He came close to that chinese girl because she reminded him of Athelstan, he bacame an addict to cope with the crippling pain of his loss, and having no one around who would understand (other than perhaps Lagertha or Bjorn, who also loved Athelstan and know some of what he meant to Ragnar). He went to Paris and endured all that disaster beyond what was reasonable, as a promise to him. He asked to be baptised so he could see him again in the afterlife, instead of reuniting with all his friends and family in Valhallah. He intended to live just long enough to conquer Paris for Athelstan and find out who had killed him, all the while having visions of him and carrying his cross to his heart. His revenge on Floki, whom he also deeply loves, was incredibly cruel, and most of it was simply to get him to admit he'd killed Athelstan out of jealousy, not for the Gods. And even still, only after another vision of Athelstan, he found it in himself to forgive Floki. The only time he ever hit Aslaug, after all the conflict they had, was when she insulted Athelstan's memory. And for years to come, he remained more or less unable to function anymore, and was consistently just... looking to die. But he simply wouldn't. Then he became unsure about where he'd actually go after death... if for being baptized his chance of going to Valhalla was lost forever, if christian Heaven even existed... So, since he still won't die instead Ragnar decays and deteriorates, and so does his sanity... until he found a way to die, and went to England again. The only person he found who was actually able to undertand what Athelstan meant to him, and all the theological complexity he had represented, was King Ecbert. Only then, and after meeting Athelstan's son, a piece of him still alive in this world, he was able to get some closure, and offer himself to die in some peace, in Athelstan's homeland. The bond those two had was the very heart of the show for a LONG time, and embodied all the themes of faith, religion and uncertainty that made Vikings way more than a action show about buff men killing eachother. 💜

I think the most obvious example of how much Ragnar loved Athelstan were his reactions. When Athelstan states he can no longer acknowledge Ragnar’s gods, he’s only slightly offput, whereas people like Floki would just outright kill his ass. When Athelstan says he should leave tho, Ragnar nearly loses it, he just loves him so much he doesn’t care about their differences.

Absolutely. And he TOLD him he loved him. As much as Ragnar loved Lagertha, he didn't actually tell her onscreen (the closest we've got was that "Is that your way of saying you love me?" Moment in season 1). And he very much NEVER told Aslaug he loved her... In fact, it's not too far fetched, if we assume he never did. But, to Athelstan, he told him to his face. Even Athelstan himself was a bit stunned about it, it's clear this isn't something Ragnar usually does! Ragnar is way more likely to *show* his love rather than say it. And he *has* also shown it to him. He's very physical and often touches and grabs people to show affection. He does it with Athelstan a lot, from the begining, and with his children specially, mostly when they were younger. With Athelstan in specific, he was more physical than with Floki or Rollo! Since Day One, he'd often go very near him, playfully push him a little, wrap an arm around him, grab his clothes or hold his hand. And after he was crucified, only Ragnar and Judith ever touched Athelstan's hands, both of them with a lot of care. Hell, Ragnar never told Rollo than he loved him, but we know he did, and only told Floki the very last time they saw eachother, since it was so important for Floki to know that. With Athelstan, he also only said it once, but he'd so often be so afraid to lose him! In season 2 Ragnar seemed so betrayed when Athelstan chose to stay in England to protect Ragnar's interests rather than going back with him (And even after being told Athelstan was dead, Ragnar kept having dreams about him, and felt he was still alive somehow). When he met him again, much like when he asked Lagertha not to leave him, he told Athelstan no come back with him (holding onto his cloak). Only after season 3, when it was clear Athelstan would still chose Ragnar and his people instead of King Ecbert and England, Ragnar became more confortable with being separated from him, and left Athelstan (and Lagertha) with King Ecbert without fear of him "stealing" neither of them away. Ecbert was very similar to Ragnar in that aspect too, both of them were very attracted to Lagertha's strength and Athelstan's complexity, and the two of them chose to go back with Ragnar. Ecbert was also quite physical with Athelstan. He also went very near him, grab him and wraped an arm around his shoulder, specially when Ragnar was there. And he also talked about how devastated and heartbroken he felt after Athelstan left him, and we all know Ragnar can sympathize with that. Even if he had pretty much no one around to talk about it with.

Great acting from both parts.

When Ragnar heard Athelstan say i can no longer acknowledge your gods you can see Ragnar was not very concerned nor did he care… he jumped in fear like when Athelstan said I’m leaving. It shows Ragnar felt more comfort with Athelstan than his gods.. he even accepted his rebirth in Christ and still wanted him to stay. Love will always be the key in life

I love the face of Ragnar when he said "i love you", like he's waiting for an "i love you too" :') so sweet...

The way Ragnar tries to understand Athelstan-and in a way he understood much more than anyone else-gives such depth to the entire story, especially to Ragnar and Athelstan’s friendship. Such an un thought of yet beautiful friendship. I love how they interact with each other, it’s like one big fascination.

Rewatching this after the botched Destiel confession Ragnar and Athelstan had so much love in their eyes for each others They cared so much

"We were friends first, and lovers second. But then perhaps this is what lovers are."

To think that if he would've let him go he would still be alive. I wondered if he blamed himself. Poor Ragnar probably felt extreme guilt.

If I recall Ragnar had a vision of Athelstan saying to forgive Floki, so he did. Not sure if it was before or after the chaining up.

He was so sad when athelstan said he should leave the way he said you cannot leave me I love you

Ragnar loves him so dearly because he is the truest of friends. The way a big tough man might love a puppy, it is an innocent love not diluted or soured by anything else. This can be misconstrued as romantic love.

And Athelstan chose to leave his homeland, and a confortable life with King Ecbert and Judith... to go back with Ragnar (around people who generally disliked him now)... without varely a second thoght.

If only he had the same reaction at lagerthas departure. If only he loved her the way she loved her. No one could come between the love of Ragnar and Athelstan's, not even close or Alsaug. I wish same was with Ragnar and Lagertha.

This is the most beautiful scene in the WHOLE show .

Ragnar saw in Athelstan what he wanted to be. It was never about whose gods you worshipped. To be the truest of ones self and to live fearless is what Ragnar loved about athelstan.

Athelstan is a character written for like to the rest of guys of this show. Ecbert, Ragnar were two of them, if they felt feelings of brotherhood as you suggest instead of sexual as i think, well is a matter of POV. the lack of sexual meeting sometimes means less than nothing.

F. Format They’re not trying to force anything. Just simply trying to state that different people have different point of views. You can believe Ragnar and Athelstan had a friendship all you want but there are many others who believe differently. I really don’t think a heterosexual man would be interested in sharing his wife with another man and he asked Athelstan another time in a deleted scene from 3x01. He mourned Athelstan like an actual lover and was miserable when he died, and he had a love for him that he never had for Aslaug or even Lagertha (he never said he loved her on screen). He even loved and trusted him more than his own kids. Platonic or romantic, it doesn’t matter. What matters is they had a great bond like no other and were definitely soulmates:)

One of the most beautiful scenes. Ragnar found a friend and a brother in Athelstan. He loved him.with all his heart. The same kind of love that he had for Floki, only this one was less potent. Only in this show have I seen what lifelong friendship and love looks like between grown men, and it not being sexual at any percent. I love it

This was one of the best scenes from the show. I'd love to one day have a friendship like Ragnar and Athelstan. I've not finished the show, I'm at the beginning of season 4 but u can tell Ragnar is going downhill.

If you pay close attention, you'll see in time that after Athelstan's death it wasn't just Ragnar that was going downhill, but the rest of the series as well.

@Fátima Arruda turns out you're right. After Ragnar died I couldn't bear to watch anymore. I've still never finished the show. Idk what they were thinking going in this direction. I'm sure ragnar was what kept mostly everyone watching.

There's a huge topic on how Ragnar and athelstan weren't just close friends but actually shared an intimate relationship. But Vikings decided not to add that bit as it may start a huge commotion and misunderstanding amongst the viewers. What I said may not be 100% true but there is a huge probability.

Alot of people talk about how it was romantic. I think alot of people failed to see the religious aspect of it. You can love somebody for offering you a different faith in life. You can love someone for giving you hope that theres something greater than what youre taught to believe in. When you give someone that changes their lives for the better no matter how fucked up you were, they'll find a reason to forgive and move forward or love and cherish.

*For people saying they are gay, that is to vastly ignore what the word "love" meant in devoulty Christian cultures, like the one Aethelstan is from.* When Ragnar says he loves Aethelstan, he is not just declaring fellowship but also respect for Aethelstan's Christian beliefs. Jesus, his 12 disciples, and the other Apostles said they loved one another all the time. It was a brotherly love. In modern times, "love" has a much more sexual connotation. It has more to do with lust and being "in love." For old Christian cultures, love was to care about someone deeply.

It's a concept from a completely different culture but, in Greek mythology, people used to have two heads, four arms and four legs. This was because everyone was paired off with a better half. But Zeus became jealous of them and feared that these hybrid people would grow too powerful so, in his rage, he separated them. Thus, these newly split people were forced to wander the earth in search of one another again. That being said, I think Ragnar and Athelstan were originally joined together as one of these hybrid people. It's clear the connection they share runs deep and, while soulmates is a term often used to describe lovers, I think it can just as easily be applied to friends and friendship. My favorite "pairing" in the entire series was that of Ragnar and Athelstan.
