ATC Gatwick 2000

This video is of Air Traffic Control Tower Gatwick Airport in the year 2000. Gatwick is the busiest single runway International Airport in the world. In 2000 aircraft movements were scheduled at up to 49 per hour, the record day then was 857. The video was taken on 31st March and 1st April. The new Surface Movement Radar displays had just been installed with identification labels for arriving aircraft with their stand number. Those familiar with Radar will note that the Air Controllers display is opposite to convention with South at the top, so that it is orientated the same as the runway from the Controllers position.

Very interesting viewing. All the controllers are wearing Astrolite headsets, a British design classic. Shame they're no longer made and, in many cases, no longer used in British ATC.
