At The Piano Exchange hear a 1943 WWII Steinway Victory upright

Музыка

Artis Wodehouse visits The Piano Exchange in Glen Cove, New York where owner Rick Smith has an important collection of historic pianos, including a restored 1943 WWII Steinway Victory piano.
This robust and fine-sounding instrument was the only piano Steinway manufactured during the WWII years due to the war effort, and was designed and built for military use.
In addition to normal handling normal piano sales, Smith has purchased, preserved, and in some cases restored pianos of unique and significant value, both musically and historically, and hopes to open a museum that would feature his most interesting instruments.

I have never heard of one of these piano until this post. I can only imagine the amount of joy they brought to the troops....to hear the sounds of a piano during a war!..... but as a pianist myself, can you just imagine how excited those soldiers that could play a piano, must have been to finally sit down and play a song...?....any song. What a morale booster!!! Thanks for posting.

I lucked into a 1951 vintage P45 Steinway upright that looks and sounds a lot like that one, except it's dressed in civvies, with a carved wood decorative case and ivory keytops. According to what I've discovered, though, it's essentially one of these pianos inside in terms of design and materials. It's a lot of fun to play and I keep it in my office and use it when I don't want to run out to the Baldwin grand in the living room.
