ASUS B550M-A PRIME Motherboard Review! - But How Is The VRM?

Ғылым және технология

Amazon Link:
www.amazon.com/dp/B081PZTZ4B/?...
Note vrm is actually 4+2 , but even with ryzen+vega I never saw the top right-hand side vrm components even get warm on the flir.
There are "double" components for the vcore, but not actually phase doubled. Still, Asus has done a good job balancing the "doubled" components so no excess heat production that I can tell.

    I once overclocked a Phenom II 1090T to 4.0GHz on an MSI NF980-G65. It's VRMs were so bad that it actually caught fire and smoked up the room with fresh burnt electronics smell. That CPU somehow survived and still works to this day.

    For my last three builds I've used the same high quality external sound card through USB. No hiss from interference inside the case; repairable; never really becomes obsolete. I think this possibility should be taken into account, even for budget builds.

    That VRM temps using a downstream cooler looks like one more reason why I despise water cooling. A lot of tech channels do their VRM test using water cooling without any air going trough the VRMs, them declaring this or that board had bad VRM design.

  • @coreyisabigpushover

    @coreyisabigpushover

    A lot of people don't think about this at all. The stock cooler for both Intel and AMD are designed to blow air downward onto the VRMs but tech reviewers rarely talk about this.

  • @michaelandrews4783

    @michaelandrews4783

    Many "enthusiasts" seem to have never asked themselves "why do stock cpu coolers blow downwards onto the motherboard? = to cool the vrms and other components. What allways makes me laugh is they liquid cool the cpu but let the vrms fry blissfully unaware they require airflow. Best solution for better cooling is simply a bigger stock air cooler.

  • @enlightendbel

    @enlightendbel

    Жыл бұрын

    This is a double edged sword though. With any high level of intensity, you're just dumping hot air on the board and VRMs. Doing the minor investment of buying a decent tower cooler is practically always better, unless you're cramped on space, then you should experiment with turning the CPU coolers fan around to draw air up instead of blowing it down. Because this will often still provide some airflow over the VRMs, while exporting the hot air asap.

    Could you please do a review of the Asus Pro WS x570-Ace? This board has very little in the way of reviews here on YT and really anywhere? It is weird to me because it is one of the only, if not the only x570 board marketed for workstation use and it is one of the few if not only boards I have seen on x570 at this level of features that isn't also a RGB rave party.

When you look on the top you see two mini chips in the SOC portion, which are the drivers. so next time remove the heatsink and look at the configuration. Highend boards do not use such parts, so when IPS or SPS are used, the drivers are inside the package.

    May I ask how you can run 7.1 audio through 6 channels? You only got 3 3.5" jacks there. 7.1 requires 4.

  • @DuyLeNguyen

    @DuyLeNguyen

    If you read the manual, it specifically states that for 7.1 channel output, the Front Panel Audio header is re-purposed to output the Side channels) (I quote verbatim: * Choose the chassis with HD audio module in front panel to support 8-channel audio output.) See page 1-7 from this manual here: dlcdnets.asus.com/pub/ASUS/mb/SocketAM4/PRIME_B550M-A/E16550_PRIME_B550M-A_UM_WEB.pdf

    If you could help would be great! I just got this motherboard and paired it up with a 5800x3d & rx6800xt, I used 4x 8gb 3200mhz corsair vengeance white argb ram, the pc ran with it running around 2100mhz but as soon as switched on xmp or even just manually switched the mhz to 3200, the pc would crash instantly after trying to boot and popped up with a system error and took me straight back to the bios. I removed 2 sticks so now it’s running absolutely fine, no crashes and is running xmp at 3200mhz, just would like to know how I could make the extra 2 sticks of ram work as I’m baffled to why it wouldn’t, just seems like a waste of money on the extra 2 sticks otherwise! Thanks if anyone knows the answer!

    Hi....... im planning to buy this motherboard today on amazon. Can someone who has the board just help me by just saying does the power LED blink when its in sleep. Gigabyte sold me a motherboard which their support manager tells me to prove where in the manual does it say it will blink during sleep mode....and asks me politely to bugger off and they dont even have to answer....that means it doesn't have that facility. I was like WTF ? its the most basic function it doesn't need a mention in the manual. Don't all mobos allow the power led to blink when its in sleep mode ??. This shit Gigabyte B250M mobo doesnt....and bec of that i sometimes dont know if i can off the power socket...in fact the support asshole was like didn't even take effort to troubleshoot....he says prove in the documentation that its SUPPOSED TO BLINK. Now next these fellows will sell a mobo which cant even do that and we customers will have to eat shit. So i wanna be sure.

    Heeey! I have that board. It's in the closet, no fault of it's own as I decided to go Threadripper and ASRock (which I would like to see you review more of motherboard-wise) but my little bro and father in law both got this board and have been rocking it just fine. And now I'll just take a moment to note how AMD has killed it with their OEM heatsink, that thing is cool for stock!

    I have no doubt that the board is more than adequate for any AM4 chip that does (or will) exist, but I really have to question the accuracy of your temperature measurements... FLIR is a great way to get misleading numbers.

    I managed to burn out a CPU cooler on this motherboard due to installing it wrong; connectors melted into the sockets and the cables burned, CPU broke too. But the motherboard took no damage thanks to the high quality Japanese surge protectors, so I just had to get a new CPU and a cooler. It's still working fine three years later. 😅
