Astrophotography Computer - Mac or PC?

Ғылым және технология

Beside all the dedicated astro gear astrophotography needs a lot of computer power. So what to buy? A PC or Mac? A workstation, notebook or mini computer? While there is not a black and white answer, there are certain things which have to be taken into account and which make the decision much more difficult than simply hunt for the highest processor power.

I'm tired of my 7 year old PC crashing due to inadequate memory trying to stack 1,000 50 MB images in PixInsight and waiting 5 to 7 minutes for blur exterminator to process an image. I just built a PC with 128 GB ram with an RTX 4090 GPU and an i9-14900k CPU. I can't wait to run a Pixinsight benchmark.

As an add-in, the ASIAIR Plus does support a select list of Canon and Nikon DSLR cameras. I'm a long time I.T. support person so computers was not a "what to use", more a "which one to use" :) My goto on a portable computer is my Lenovo P50 that I can use for control and post processing. SInce I do enjoy being out in the night sky I also use a ASIAIR Plus and iPad for control of the collection process. I've also gone with the ZWO ASI ecosystem of cameras and EAF with skywatcher and Meade mounts that are supported.

Hi, it seems that many people either don't know or have forgotten that ASTAP started life as a stacking program that runs on the three major platforms. Aside from its great plate-solving capabilities which I use on my telescope-mounted windows computer, I use it as the stacking program on my M1 Mac mini. Hope this helps someone 🙂

Thanks for this video. Very timely, since I have been trying to figure out which computer to buy. I have a desktop Mac Studio but much of the software for equipment control is PC only (specially ASCOM related). Your advice that instead of one do-it-all --- to think of it as two separate tasks is brilliant. Acquiring, and then processing. That's the route I'm going to take.

I use an asiair air plus for the shooting and a pc (builded myself, i9 14900KF, RTX 4070Ti and 64Gb of RAM) for the stacking and processing ^^

Nothing purchased yet. However, I'm completely sold on the ZWO ASI suite of HW. AM-5, AIR plus, auto focuser, cameras and guide camera. Appears to have seamless integration.

Very nice summary. ASIAIR+ for control etc. and a simple 2018 MacBook Pro with only 8gig ram. It works amazingly well and I can stack and process my images in 2-3 hours. I only should an ASI533mc-p camera so my FIT's are not too large but I do drizzle integrate all my images.

I feel fortunate that I got into astrophotography just as the ASIAIR Pro came out, since I got one of those (along with my first dedicated astro camera, also from ZWO) and found the whole thing pretty simple to use. As a Mac user, it was a bit disappointing that so many programmes only work on Windows (such as AutoStakkert!) so I have not done much planetary work yet. One day I might go down that path, and hope that by then a Mac solution will become available.

You might consider adding a windows partition on your Mac. With BootCamp it is really easy and does not impact the performance of your Mac. The only disadvantage is that is eats away some of your HD space.....

Hi Sascha, i like your video’s 👍🏻 I'm thinking of buying an all in one Imac M3 desktop. Can you explain to me which min/max configuration is suitable for Pixinsight🙏🏻 Thanks in advance, Leo.

Any configuration is suitable - I use PixInsight before on a M1 16GB configuration, and it worked well. The main reason I upgraded the specs so much on my M2 now is video editing - not PixInsight. That said, I would definitely not go below 16GB RAM, and I would choose at least a 1 TB SSD. These are just things you can not change anymore, and with that you really future-proof your computer.
