Hey guys, are any of you old enough to remember that?
It was the brightest supernova in nearly 400 years when it lit the skies of the southern hemisphere in February 1987. Supernova 1987A - the boom of a blue supergiant star in the nearby mini-galaxy known as the Large Magellanic Cloud - amazed the astronomical community. It offered them an unprecedented opportunity to observe an exploding star in real-time with modern instruments and telescopes. But something was missing. After the supernova faded, astronomers expected to find a neutron star (a hyper-dense, collapsed stellar core, made largely of neutrons) left-over at the heart of the boom. They saw nothing.

Good news, don't you think? With the discovery of the "missing pulsar," we are perhaps about to solve one of the most exciting mysteries of the last decades. But also the one I am about to propose is not bad. Apparently, the time has come to forget forever the old story that wanted Phobos and Deimos to be two asteroids captured from the red planet... Listen up!
Ever since they were discovered in 1877, the moons of Mars - Phobos and Deimos - have raised many questions, some of which remain open to this day. Of these two objects, in fact, surprise among other things the small size (just 22 kilometers in diameter for Phobos, about 15 for Deimos) and irregular shape.
3
We have not done in time to give news of a study according to which it was the fall of a comet fragment to give the end the dinosaurs of the cretaceous, that immediately is published another one that instead confirms, with new evidences, that it was surely an asteroid to make the misdeed! And with this excluding once for all also the theory of volcanic eruptions.
In short, we come back, and this time in a definitive way, to the most credited hypothesis since the '80s, when scientists found, everywhere in the world, traces of iridium in the same geological layer where dinosaur fossils were found.

A bit like that of Venus, Titan's surface is also undetectable from outer space. In this case, Saturn's large moon appears to be permanently immersed in a thick fog of nitrogen gas, but below the clouds, the landscape looks similar to Earth, with mountains, continents, islands, rivers, lakes and seas in a liquid state.
But similar does not mean "equal"... Titan is in fact a hostile and cold world. Its distance from the Sun is about ten times that of the Earth and its surface temperatures are around -180 degrees Celsius. Even the hydrological cycle on Titan works in a way "similar" to that of our Earth, but also in this case with a not insignificant difference: instead of water, Saturn's moon hosts liquid methane and ethane. So much so that its surface appears dotted with hundreds of lakes and seas of hydrocarbons.
The largest of these seas, the Kraken Mare is as large as our Caspian Sea (450 thousand square kilometers) and contains about 80 percent of the surface liquids of the satellite. Well, in the course of a new study, scientists have managed to estimate the depth, finding that in some places comes up to over 300 meters.

Thank you so much! This is the best thing related to space. We get to know everything all at once. As a space nerd who would like to see you grow as much as possible, these are some free suggestions that you may or may not add, from a pure fan: 1) You can add some questions at the end to keep us engaging in much better way. It can be related to missions to moons of other planet. 2) In addition to weekly news, you can just 1 minute definition of some terms like event horizon to always make us remember our basics. It's always good to be strong in basics in between current happenings 3) You can add new jobs for people like me (fans of your channel and good at drawing, or other fans who will be willing to take this channel to 1M subs which it so rightly deserves. Thankyou for providing the best weekly space content 🙏🏻

This channel is so underrated, you guys deserve more subscribers. A fan suggestion, maybe do something like Anton Petrov does, i.e find a research paper related to astronomy and explain it in a simple way? Anyway, keep up the good work, this weekly news idea is pretty good.

Great project; maybe adding the latest/newest AstroNews video on top in the playlist will be a good idea? so that if you embed the series (in a Protopage or similar) the latest video becomes automatically visible.

A welcome addition to an already superb channel. Should a weekly program prove be too ambitious, a monthly news update would be an acceptable fallback. Keep up the excellent programming.

All that ethane on Titan. Kinda makes me wanna get a wee modular reactor, start catalyzing it into ethanol, and open a bar there.

I believe having a similar base located ON the Moons surface would be adequate instead of the orbiting base. With the Moons minimal gravity it wouldn't take much to launch off its surface but that in itself may be one big issue. Living in an orbiting circular base and spinning on an axis, could be reason enough due to the one main fact of controlling the rotation hence creating a more suitable gravity environment for the inhabitants (ie plants, animals and humans). Interesting, to say the least. Great content. Keep it up!!..

Ooo Supernova 1987 marks my birthday year! Not sure if you know..but when a star goes supernova how long does it take for the Neutron star to form? You say that after the collapse of the star the scientists were expecting to see a neutron star emerge...what time or how long after does that event occur?

We seem to be at the birth of a fundamentally new era in the space age. It is being redefined as a legitimate industry. Even though the two biggest drivers (SpaceX and Blue Origin) see space not as a commodity, but as a necessity for the growth and survival of our species, they both understand that the very nature of humanity is that progress in this area has to be seated in economics. On this basis I think the first thing that is going to happen is that low orbit satellite networks will become the de facto infrastructure for the Internet. Global offerings by Bezos and Musk will likely kill off local ISP and telecom companies by under-cutting them. Once they have secured and control the market, it will essentially become a monopoly, but the end result is they will have enormous and on going revenue streams to support their continuing space programs, Looking further ahead, over the next couple of hundred years the Moon will be exploited both for its natural resources, and in certain cases, as a location for environmentally harmful and/or dangerous heavy industry. I can see things potentially getting ugly, as corporations and nation states fight over their claim to exclusive access to the moon. I can see this becoming especially ugly with potential confrontations between China and the West, that could even escalate into violence and in the worst case war. This would be ironic, since the underlying vision is to secure humanities future, not put it at risk -but human nature has always been its own worst enemy.
