Astra Militarum, a Two-Faced Warhammer Army

This week I take a look at what can only be described as a two faces Warhammer 40,000 army. The Astra Militarum have been around for a long time in Warhammer and that leads to something really weird. The army, on its face, says it's a pretty generic stock standard military army, which is fine, but underneath all that camo and khaki something else can be found, and personally, I think it's far better than anything on the surface.

Makes sense, I'm definitely just partial to weathering stuff, and I know a lot of other people won't have their models look like this on the table, so it feels more personal to me. From a contrast perspective that makes perfect sense though, it would make them stand out on the table easier.

I love the Imperial guard. I get it when people say, nah, they are just ordinary dudes. But in my opinion, they are the most brave and badass army in the game. I mean, anyone can be brave and badass when they go into battle with a huge suit of power armour wrapped around them like a Marine, or if they are big, strong & muscly like an Ork, or fearless like a Tyranid, or possessing technology like the Tau. But the Imperial Guard are just ordinary dudes. They have some of the weakest armour, the weakest weapons, they have some of the weakest physiques and their intelligence is middling. And yet there they are standard strong in front of huge Zenos, Mutants, Heretics, Power Armoured Super Soldiers. They are always outgunned but they fight on anyway. This all makes them almost the underdogs. They are to 40k what the Hobbits are in Middle Earth, what Hawkeye is to the Avengers. They are the Bassist of a band. You don't hear it as well, you underestimate it's importance, they are the butt of every joke, but take it away and the band is nothing without it. You just have to respect their loyalty and their courage. And then as a bonus, that Leman Russ Battle Tank is just one of the best looking, most Iconic miniatures of all 40k. I have 3 and it's not enough. I want a whole army of Leman Russ.

I am with you my man, I have always loved the Imperial Guard! And when I last winter got back to painting after about 20 years or so, I found some old Cadians and after that I've reignited my love for them and all new Astra Militarum units, I especially love the Death Korps of Krieg. Like you said, they are just men, but they are brave and do not hold back even though the odds are against them! I just love to paint them looking really worn down, dark and gritty, beat up with blood and mud. I have never really liked Space Marines, imo they are pretty boring (not lore wise but just the models to paint), the IG just have so much more feeling to them imo. (shameless plug I just made an Instagram with focus on my minis, check out "swedeminis" if you wanna!:)) Oh and Catachans... I dont like them, sorry. too silly for me lol.

My favorite part of the Imperial Guard is how well you are able to invent your own fluff and make the army fit. Pick a planet, create your own, come up with a back story, create uniforms, and then with the rich tapestry of models (not to mention 3rd party bits, even as simple as a head swap) you can make a one of a kind army. Cadians for Cadian's sake pulled from the stock images on the store never appealed to me, so I came up with my own uniform camo and colors that make it feel way more my own.

I find decrying the Catachans as "not making sense in 40K" mystifying. _Every_ part of 40K is incongruous nonsense. That's what makes it awesome. 40K started as 50% anti-Thatcher satire, and 50% references to 80s popular culture. Including Terminator, Starship Troopers, Dune, and Rambo/Predator.

I quite like the sillier and generally over the top aspects of the Imperial Guard, along with most such things in 40K, because it gives the setting some much needed levity. Maximum roster size is 20 men so I have made 6 different teams because I can dabble into all kinds of armies that I always wanted to try my hand at painting but never wanted to spend the amount a full army would cost. I have 3 Marine teams (Compendium Deathwatch 30k loyalists from Isstvan III in Mark III armour, Compendium Chaos Marines (Alpha Legion) and Cultists (Escher ganger models), Chaos Legionaries (Word Bearers), Tyarnids, Compendium Tau and Pathfinders The six of them gave me reason to 1: Build Mark III Marines from Isstvan III like I had knocking in my brain since 2007 2: Build Escher gangers and Test the new Contrast over metal paint scheme for Alpha Legion 3: Paint Word bearers 4: Finally get some paint on my Space Hulk game genestealers and Finally get some tyranids (gaunts/gants and warriors) which were almost my first army when I started 40k Also Test glow in the dark pigment as I had wanted to try that on a model for some time 5: Buy back a small amouunt into Tau which were my first 40k army circa 2003 which got sold in 2010 when I wasn't using them and needed the money more than the models. But the true Impetus for all 6 projects was my wife who always wanted to try painting some Sisters so she got her team of sisters. I think the reason why most people don’t go too dark with their paint schemes is that there’s comes a point where the details get muddled when you’re looking at them from a distance on the the table top. Not to an extreme degree, but my brain always processes things faster when it’s clearer and brighter .

This video is why learning the lore is important. I heard the story of the Mordant acid dogs by Leutin and had never been more interested in the imperial guard. The variations in units based on the planet, or the types of units employed by them. They're also a more relateable force than space marines for example. They're not just army dudes, and the Catachan are more interesting than simple Rambo ripoffs who DO have their place in the 40k scene.

While the Catachans have an 80s action movie aesthetic to them, they do come from a mini-genre of 70s SF, the deathworld. These were incredibly dangerous planets, kind of like Australia on steroids, and some other weird stuff.

Hey, I’m a guard player! Just a recommendation, since you’re a fan of weathering. Take a sharp knife and a 1mm drill bit and go around the model digging divots and drilling holes into the armor. This actually has canon legitimacy. Most armor used by guardsmen is a hand-me-down from another (usually deceased) guardsman. So you can have a bit of fun imagining the many battles that the armor has been in, and the many different guardsmen who’ve worn it. Also, all the people in the comment section complaining about you decrying the catachan jungle fighters, I’m just wondering why that commissar hasn’t killed those guardsmen. Allowing your lasgun to rust is punishable by pain of death.

Ah nice. I started with the start collecting box in 2020. My imperial soldiers are darker than the boxart as well as I also think that suggestion of color is somewhat to bright... Mine have death guard green armor, Deathkorps darb clothing and the parts of the lasgun that are "originally " green were painted corax black but got metal dry rushing making it look like very very dark gunmetal. My recently acquired Deathkorps Killteam (not fully built yet) are similar. Grey helmet, Deathkorps darb coats, rifles that look like they have wooden parts... Only one who got a pretty similar color scheme to the official stuff although not an exact copy. I am actually thinking about upgrading the bases by another layer of wash and a abbadon black rim as my first approach was corvus black for the rim. (hadn't bought the other black at the time).

This was a fun video, and I think your end results turned out quite nice, but in a way that even someone who feels that level is beyond them might be able to try and emulate. Personally, I've always been a fan of Guard. On the one hand, Imperial Guard/Astra Militarum line has always had the bonus and bane of multiple literal lines; Space Marines are Space Marines, except for color scheme, but Cadians, Catachan, Vostroyans, and Kriegers are each different whole lines of models, and some have proven lacking in certain options without heavy kit-bashing, but then Cadians are still Cadians, regardless of color scheme, so if you have a specific color set you like, you can easily do it, and you still have your army. If you like Imperial Fists, I hope you are a fan of yellow power armor, because if you paint them blue, they really aren't IF, even if they are still some Sons of Dorn. While things like Space Marines are easier to get the models, that makes the colors seemingly more important to their identity (opinion), where as Guard can, once you pick your regiment line, be really any colors you prefer; black and white, green and khaki camo, blue with black flak, or whatever. I've never actually tackled it, but the options for scheme within Guard, once you know which regiment suits you best, is one of my favorite things about it.
