ASTRA Bridge - Future of motorway rehabilitation

The ASTRA Bridge is a mobile flyover bridge for maintenance work on highways. In accordance with the initial findings from the bridge’s pilot deployment, the bridge will now be optimized. Marti Technik is taking over structural adaptation of the bridge with an extension of the ramps that will adjust the internal radius. The bridge is scheduled to return to service on the A1 in spring 2024.

    I understand that I'm essentially watching an 8 minute ad showcasing some cool engineering things, but the video feels very well made. I honestly wish more companies had similar departments. I'd be very interested in reading a case study based on this channel and whether or not the funds used on it are considered "worth it". Not to mention this is actually entertaining and doesn't feel like an ad at all!

    100% agree, i found this channel from their other video regarding the tunneling project, and its made with the same quality as a full blown documentary, could watch this stuff all the time, also huge testament to the quality of the engineering

    I've never seen a temporary bridge constructed over a road to do maintenance, leave it to the Swiss to think up something like this. This channel is the kind of stuff you would see on channels like Discovery, but while they're dicking with reality TV shows we have to rely on construction companies like Marti Group to see this awesome work in action.

    We have those in Austria. 20 Years or even more. Fum Fact they are constructed over bridges. But they are not 240 Meters long just 100.

    That is what I was also wondering. The working height is very limited, so that excludes any kind of heavy excavation machines or any kind of heavy machinery altogether (heavy pavement grinders typically measure 4.5m or more when you include the belt). That limits the effectiveness of the work done under the bridge. That said, the fact that the bridge does not limit traffic as much as closing a full lane means there is less pressure to finish the work as fast as possible.

    @@zegamerz1980 They probobly have a specific set of machines its designed for. Or possibly a very specific machine that do all the work at once. So they run one lane. and run support trucks at the side. The move the bridge over sideways (probobly just take a minute or two) do the other lane. Then they move the bridge forward some 200 meters, then do it all again the next day.

    I lived next to where this bridge was built. The idea is not that bad. But trucks and many cars did not believe they could drive over it with 40 km/h and the congestions were immense. To be honest, I would not drive over it at 40 km/h with a truck.

    @@fffmmm22 I agree with the appraisal, the bridge realises a pretty massive bottleneck with road works. However, the approach grades seemed pretty sharp and with a 2km turning circle it would not be adaptable for use on a winding road. If solutions were developed for both of these, the concept could be unbelievably beneficial.

    ​@@lazyidiotofthemonth It prevents whole sections of freeway having to be closed for maintanance works as traffic can pass over the work site. This also helps the workers saftey as otherwise the traffic is often routed very closely around them to prevent closures. It's actually a gouvernment (ASTRA is the Swiss roads authority) project to have less traffic jams because of work.

    @@lazyidiotofthemonth what about traffic flow and worker safety? Its safer being under a bridge, than behind 1.5t piece of concrete, im pretty sure a 40t truck going 80kmh dosent care much for a piece of concrete in case of a accident

    I guess it would be worth it if that road is a major thoroughfare and a economic importance, also there's no viable detour routes (I believe all highways are a "descendants" of the old national routes but not all national routes can handle the current globalized amount of traffic especially those that goes thru the old towns)

    This was roughly the same idea I had 10 years ago while thinking about a solution for roadworks. This is really an ambitious project. A video of roadworks under the bridge to see what's possible and what's not would pe awesome.

    I love this idea, but I wonder how extensive the road work needed to be. With the amount of time the road was shut down to install the bridge, and the relatively narrow working space, how much of a benefit does assembling the bridge provide? Also wondering if it can shift around relatively easily if needed. It only appears to allow work on one lane right now. An incredible, and beautiful piece of engineering. Just had some questions.

    The problem in Switzerland is that a construction site means narrowing the Autobahn from two lanes to one lane. This notoriously creates huge problems on our Autobahn. With that bridge, the hope is to help traffic flow without having to take away one lane. Constructing such a bridge makes sense because roadwork is usually done on a stretch of road which is several kilometres long. It's especially important for trucks because if trucks get stuck in traffic, they could fall into the night curfew which would be a disaster for truckers. Avoiding traffic jams therefore is important for truckers. The bridge can move easily. When a patch of roadwork is done, it will move ahead 100 meters. And only being able to work on one lane is not an issue. Here in Switzerland, roadwork is usually done on one lane anyway with or without that bridge because as you narrow down the Autobahn from two lanes to one lane, the second lane still needs to be used for traffic. With that bridge, you can keep two lanes going while trucks can approach the road work site from the side of the bridge without being impeded by traffic. Without that bridge, you sometimes have issues with trucks, machinery and traffic all sharing a narrow space. So all in all, such an idea makes sense for Switzerland.

    That bridge was a disaster!!! Will never be used again. Traffic had to slow down before the bridge (especially trucks) that resulted in massiv trafficjams. And lowered cars almost touched the ground when coming off the bridge. Everybody disliked it!

    Do you reckon it could be improved by having a less steep angle to get on and off? Was there a fixed decision taken on it never being used again? If so, was it by Marti (in which case it will probably be dead for good) or a decision by the government, in which case they could use an improved version in another place with different government?

    This is a revolutionary concept imho. In germany, the Autobahn is blocked by multiple construction works over a long stretch, with work sometimes beginning months after setting up the parameter. It's a contract thing. With the mechanism in the video, you could easily overcome those problems and make the traffic flow normally. With the bridge setup and traffic flowing over it, you can literally take months of time without any major impact. Tho there probably will be a dude blasting over the structure with 300km/h in his bmw.

    They closed it for just two weekend nights. Milling up the existing surface and then laying down the new would certainly take more than that. And the traffic disruption during all the duration of all the work would have been greater than we see here, once the bridge is set up. We are never told if this is in support of a repaving or of a job with more digging.

    It’s a great concept. 1 flaw I see is, how are you going to get road construction equipment in and out from underneath the bridge, especially when roadways need to be resurfaced? The only plausible solution I can think of, is by making highways 6-8 lanes (3-4 lanes coming and 3-4 lanes going) wide, to minimize traffic congestion. Another flaw I see, is the routine maintenance of the bridge sections. Thirdly, the numbers of man-hours and personnel it takes to setup and take the bridge apart. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a brilliant idea and proof of concept, but there’s pro’s and con’s to everything.

    It isn't a proof of concept. It is an actual bridge that is being used. Equipment fits underneath. Engineers have anticipated that. They don't just build a bridge and then realise that equipment doesn't fit underneath. They know exactly what dimensions their equipmen has and what is needed to accomodate them. I don't know why you would think that 8 lanes are needed... For what? They already use that bridge here and it works fine on existing Autobahns. You also highly overestimate the maintenance of such a bridge. Here in Switzerland, we also operate some of the most advanced tunnel boring machines and even those highly stressed machines don't need as much maintenance as people believe. So maintenance for such a "simple" bridge (compared to a boring machine) is not an issue. And also the man hours of setting up such a bridge is not an issue. Compared to the amount of time such road work takes, it is more efficient to have two lanes role over that bridge rather than having only one lane and huge traffic jams. If you have to sacrifice two nights for that, it makes a lot of sense for traffic planners and the economy which relies heavily on flowing traffic. You don't seem to understand at which technologically advanced level we Swiss work because the "flaws" you see have already been accounted for long time ago. And there are extensive cost/reward calculations which clearly show that such a bridge is worthwile. If you want to see how advanced Swiss people are, watch a documentary on how the Gotthard Base tunnel was built or the Ritom tunnel for electricity construction. That is some advanced stuff. If they can handle these, don't ever think that those some people have not thought about those easy question where you seem to spot problems. They are highly competent people and some of the best in the world.

    We have this kind of bridges already for years here in Vienna, Austria allowing the exchange of expansion joints on one of the busiest highways in Austria. Our experiences are very good!

    I remember when this was first publicly discussed. Our reaction across the board was "Sönd die vom Aff bisse?!" (Are they bitten by a monkey?) But they pulled it off and now it's bloody reality.     It is awsome engineering creation and with a few upgrades i can truely see some practical use to that.. let me just ask, thats some proof of concept bridge? Its width and hight are kind of small to accommodate any real construction under it.. tnx

    No, it is an actual bridge that is being used on our Autobahn. Right now on the A1. Not a proof of concept. The proof of concept design stage was years ago. I actually drove over that bridge several times.

    I don't get it.. best case they can rehab 1 of the lanes under it.. maybe they do one and shift the whole thing over 5 feet to do the other lane?

    Idea is good but, In India construction and traffic goes parallel, like 2out of 3 lanes are paved at one time, traffic is diverted to service road or Raw roads And for about 300kms both sides it was done this year, I saw it daily

    I had completely misunderstood it. I thought it was a mobile bridge to alleviate traffic (which would actually be a great idea, esp at busy intersections). Turns out it's only for roadworks great idea nevertheless.

    @@GermoVwell you could leave the shoulder open i reckon since that doesn't need nearly the same level of maintenance. or you could build access points for vehicles and material into the bridge, and only block that lane for the moment they're actually used

    But Semi Trucks can not pass it with 60km/h they have to get on the bridge with about 40km/h because its too steep on both ends. I drove there and we had Traffic Jams every Day.
