If you do a little research you will likely discover that fireplaces in these beautiful château buildings were very often not centered in rooms as a result of chimney placement. It never stopped them from paneling walls.

What a job! The tape removal was very interesting! I remember another KZreadr who had several floors of terracotta tiles and also did the stand up method when they were too weary yo kneel! If soda worked, I'd try something more powerful. I've been recommended a stripper consisting of half lime putty and half linseed oil soap by volume. It needs to be rinsed well and neutralised with vinegar afterwards. I haven't tried it but the soap alone is pretty powerful. For one painting project I had a mix of soap and water in an old paint tin that had seen pretty much everything - water-based paint, oil paint, epoxy rust-inhibiting primer, you name it. I left the mix in the tin over night to store my paint brush and the next day the tin below the water line was clean metal.
