Worst year of my life, my dad took me to Rotterdam for the final that year and within 6 months, my dad and my beloved grandfather were both dead. 1982 really was a horrible year for me, though losing my father and grandfather obviously hurt more than a stupid football game in the long run .

Peter Withe's goal still sends shivers up my spine. We were battered that day, but thank god we rode our luck and came through. Because it was never to be again for Villa. VTID

@@graeme9668 lol - maybe. Bayern were the absolute standout side of the time and Villa were total underdogs, but we had talent. If you can, watch the entire match. In the highlights, you don't even get to see that villa had a goal ruled offside too. Most of the match took part in the midfield.

As a Forest fan we had some good teams un those days in the Midlands. Great days.

I've been a fan of Arsenal since the 1980 Cup Winners Cup final against Valencia, but I still have the Aston Villa photos from that time. I really liked the team and was rooting for them in the final. Actually in games between English and German teams I always supported the English/I didn't think about the reasons/!Maybe because English teams always let you play your game too/they called it fair play/:-) Greetings from Bulgaria.

Bayern lost 3 finals to english clubs ( Villa, Man Utd and Chelsea), where they were the best team...by far, on the pitch. But, football is not a fair game...if it was, wasn`t funny.

i was around 10 years old in 82. I had to ask one of my colleagues who was older than me asking why it seems Aston villa was popular back then. He said, Aston villa used to have a good team and won championships.

Spinks was superb that night on his debut. The 6th consecutive European Cup for English sides that not been matched to this day.

you would find it very difficult to find a better performance from a keeper in a major final....edit, what I should have added is keeper with hardly any games or experience, the others mentioned were all established international keepers with many caps....

What a win, but bloody hell, Villa didn't half ride their luck at times. Must have been more than a few heart attacks in Birmingham that evening.

Aberdeen beat bayern on the way to cup winners final where we beat real Madrid. Back in those days I thought it was a given that aberdeen would beat these teams all day long, how times have changed.

The name of Aston Villa will forever be next to the Real's and Milan's of the European cup thanks to this 1982 team.

i hope i can one day pay for me & my dad to be at a final that we win...he's beyond 50 now but he loves villa more than anything. would make his entire life to be there with me as we win a cup final

Clearly Aston Villa were the dominant side in this game and deserved to win. Had Bayern on the ropes for just about 2 minutes of the match.

Liverpool and Man U were the most successful in Europe, But Forest and Villa winning was like the equivalent of Espanyol and Granada winning the UCL.

Villa did to Bayern Munich, what Bayern Munich did to Leeds United in 1975. 1981-82 was only Villa's third season of European football, and their first in the European Cup. Only Jimmy Rimmer in the Vila squad had been in a European final - as the unused substitute goal keeper in the 1968 European Cup Final. And he then came off after 11 minnutes. His replacement, Nigel Spink, had only ever played one first team match before then, more than two yeas before that night. Come thenight, it was a marvellous defensive effort by Villa, as they deservedly won the match. After the match, the arrogant German players, with a total lack grace, sat in a semi circle in the middle of the pitch, with no regard to the occasion. Showing a terrible lack of sportsmanship. Perhaps the German captain Breitner sat there and regretted promising Bayern Munich supporters that his team would bring the European Cup to Munich when he spoke from the balcony of the Munich City Hall before the final. Who can say?

Compare this to the obscene billion dollar petrodollar funded Man City win against Inter. Something always struck me about these European journeys. Liverpool's final against Roma in particular. Whilst the Romans were at high altitude for high intensity training having every single aspect of it being monitored by top doctors, nutritionists and scientists the Liverpool players blagged a couple of days off and went on the piss for two days. The only training they did was in a local park knock about with jumpers for goal posts. Clough always insisted his players have a drink with their lunch and dinner. Aston Villa players take photos of themselves on the pitch with the Bayern players warming up whilst Tony Morley was outside the ground handing out tickets to his mates. Crazy. Same with the fans. Europeans want tifo and pyro whilst British fans are in the pub and 80% of the stadium is empty 10 minutes before kick off because somebody insisted on one more. Different times different mentalities.
