Thank you for the video Afzal. I have been following you for a long time and it has greatly helped me. One question: Currently, I am about to finish my 6-month internship at a Sales Analyst sort of role. I really enjoy it but would also like to learn more about the investment role and develop my technical expertise. Do you think it is better for me to find another internship in a more investment role right now? Or currently, I might get offered a full-time position at the sales analyst role. Do you think one year from now I can switch to an investment analyst role at a new firm or would I have to start again as an intern? Would really appreciate your help.

What do you think about the mobility from an investment role in asset management to hedge funds ? Because joining Hedge funds straight out university it’s almost impossible... Thank you for the video, and merry Xmas to you too!

What mainly happens is that a certain person would get to their VP position or near to that role and they then decide to go into Hedge Funds/ Private Equity, because what happens is one you reach VP/MD positions, a lot of your salary would be locked into shares of that company and you can only take them out 2/3 years later so to avoid being in this 'trap', a lot ending up taking a different role elsewhere. All the stuff I said ^^ - is from watching @Afzal 's videos, I am interested in Investment Banking so that's why I watched a lot of his valuable videos.

I’m no expert here but I can offer some insight as I’m currently within asset management. AM to PE is near impossible as the latter requires you to have skills that AM work does not nurture. For example, deal exposure and modelling skills. Hence, PE shops tend to hire from IB. In this case you’d need to get into a top MBA school and go from there. Your AM experience should help you in that regard. AM - HF is doable but depends on the type of HF it is (L/S or macro) and the roles. Broadly speaking, HF work is similar to that of AMs in terms of structure. Both have portfolio managers and researchers for example. Overall, I’d say if you want any chance of lateraling into a HF (or PE) from AM you’ll need to network.

No. Unless you already have a bunch of experience in the industry. People struggle to land sales roles even with undergraduate degrees, internships and work experience.
