Assessing Soil Health Using a Microscope with Meredith Leigh
The most essential question for farmers and gardeners to ask about their soil is, "Is it alive?" We will explore the diverse microorganism communities present in soil and why it is so important to keep them thriving and in balance. Meredith Leigh will explain the importance of a dynamic soil food web. View multiple different local participant samples and apply that information on your own farm or garden to build your own soil enriching strategies.

This young lady is going places. Smart, knowledgeable, excellent speaker. Great lecture!
Shout out to whomever edited this. The timing of the slides are very good.
Thank you. Such great information. You have provided great pictures of what to look for. I have followed a lot of Elaine's videos but your pics rock. Would love to see additional work that you have available. Thanks again.
OMG, how can you be so smart. If I had a teacher like you I'd be a great scientist by now. Cant thank you enough for the knowledge and how you explained things. Huge love from India...

Absolutely loved this video! Can’t wait for part 2!
Fantastic presentation and information. Now I know the microbiome science behind the practice of No Till and more about the mechanism of soil carbon sequestration. Putting carbon back in the soil is nectar for building soil structure. And its great how you love this stuff.
Truly excellent. I am a beginner with compost tea, microbiology and sustainable agriculture. Having read books, articles and watched about 30 hours of videos (including Dr Elaine Ingham), you can believe me when I say this is, by far, the best education on the subject to date. It is informative, thorough, simple, and covers all the first time requirement and beyond that will be encountered and need to be understood. Sorry to go on, but the filming and sound are also very well put together. The slides are especially illuminating too. Thanks, for your efforts and sharing. Very, very much appreciated. My interest in this is that I am trying a new approach for for my roses, in pots, in the tropics, on my roof garden, in one of the most polluted capital cities in the world, (so a few challenges to overcome). Im a reasonably experienced gardener, (in UK), but roses here (in the entire city) are rare (i have seen zero, anywhere). My 2 attempts, with intensive (traditional) care have resulted in decaying health and slow dying of all of my 90, then 70 rose plants, after their initial flourish for 3-6 months. I still have high hopes of another bash, re-invigorated, with the compost tea/microbes approach, and armed with my new microscope.
Incredible video. She had an answer for every question. A lot of good information here, I'm definitely going to be googlin half of this.
This is excellent information and thank you very much for sharing!! You have clearly explained how to distinguish between food and bad guy !! Awesome
Ah yes... just past my bedtime.... lets start this video that will be to interesting to not finish..... love this stuff : )
Very informative! Thanks. Looking forward to the rest.
I love Dr.Elaine Ingham. She changed my life for free! I must say youre a little bit easier to follow and i dig your eloquent simplicity
Watching this with my kids. We just got a microscope and good compost and learning as fast as we can and having fun

How did you find a good microscope? I've been looking and i can't really find exactly what Mrs. Ingham said. She said it had to be "Shadowing or Diferencial Interference Contrast as opposed to Phase Contrast" Dic is hard to find and when i do find it, it's really expensive. Do you know what she means when she sais "shadowing"? Is it darkfield? I dont think it is

This is a great video! Thank you!

Ms. Leigh is a *wonderful* instructor and presenter. Any high-level college would be proud to have her on their faculty.

Except she does not have the qualifications to be a high-level instructor in universities. Taking an online course does not make one a professor. That requires an actual doctorates degree. This is like saying you have what it takes to build rockets because you watched a YT video about the Apallo program. Ignorant.
Ohh... cant wait for the next episode!

Amazing video, thanks a lot!
26:55 I think the bacteria make the conditions which allow the fungi to actually pull the matter together! Super neat!!! It was from another swf/lwf video I remember hearing the process broken down.
I'm absolutely enthused by this approach to agriculture - what an outstanding paradigm shift in understanding. But, although I'm familiar with microscopes (micropetrology - rock mineralogy studies) the cost of a suitable microscope does give me something to think on. So, I'm wondering if there are any reliable macroscopic indicators that will help navigate compost management? Now I'm going to read the other comments and responses 🙂
Thank you so much for sharing!
What a great presentation! Good luck.
Thanks. This is helpful.
Wow great presentation! Thanks!

Mycelium growth - I use a sugar water solution spray on the mycellium a few times a day. Carbon dioxide, moist and high humidity atmosphere too. Plastic liner covering the mycelium with holes poked in it for some oxygen flow for the mycelium. This is my first time growing magic mushrooms.
Brilliant!! What an eye opener, thanks so much.

Regarding turning compost too much- The Johnson-Su Composting Bioreactor may be a solution. To do it properly, worms are added to finish. The compost tends to be fungi dominated. Of course if you choose to then make compost extract for tea, the bubbling will shred fungal strands. There must be a happy medium in terms of bubble size which allows you to extract biology without shredding it to bits. Seems most tea makers prefer vigorous bubbling to extract as much biology as possible. I suspect that might not be the best approach. Anyone have any insight on bubble size & the time factor for extraction?

For fungal expansions it is best to choose fungi which may be cultured axenically; then taking the liquid culture or grain spawn and mixing into your compost.

Who can still plough or dig or apply biocides after seeing this underground world?! Thank you!
Great stuff. I just started looking with my 5 years old daughter into what's going on in our wormbox via microscope. We found some crazily fast moving nematodes and some other specimen... Is there any sort of image search for identifying what it is? Using Google image search is not that great on it yet... Maybe there is something more professional?
Great presentation... By the way, what type of Microscope would you recommend that I get for doing the practical work? Any suggestions?

I cannot get my local Master Gardeners from my Extension office to understand this. They kept dismissing compost tea as a hoax and insisted on soil samples sent to the state university that does not address these things. I care more about the life in soil than some arbitrary NPK numbers. We need more science being taught at that level. When I mentioned Dr Elaine Ingham they never heard of her and could care less. They regurgitated their pamphlet literature and cited their own failed field studies which they wouldn't admit had no controls nor examination of compost or compost tea or soil under the microscope.

That is typical in cult groups where any dissent is seen as a personal slight and grave threat to their identity. Mostly found in extremist groups, such as progressives and socialist camps. Primarily what drove the chaos and destruction we saw in America in 2020. A very concerning trend among young people venturing into management positions who's delusions fuel their outrage and abbhorent behavior. Take what fruits their information provides and leave the chaff of their politics on the ground, where they belong.

We don't really understand how energy-density waves form spiral arms in stages of a galaxy's life, but it doesn't mean it's "none of our business." If "how round things roll better than square things roll" was none of our business, you'd have a hard time getting to church.
you need to set up your microphones to stop background noise information killing sound feed back keep your sound away from any thing noisy your view screens can destroy your video pick up as well it all very distraction for seeing and hearing and concentration be aware of background sound and intense background light ...... this stuff is too important to allow bad sound and bad images be aware of it it causes energy sapping irritation
