Great instructional John. Thanks. "While looking for, I found..." sounds like my shop floor!

I will use this connector next week. I didn´t know it was hard to do the click. Thanks for the tips!

I'm not sure I'd say it is 'hard' to get it to click... unless you try to do it ONLY with your grip strength! Manufacturers *do* make a vice-like/pliers-like tool for their connectors. But (last I checked) they are not priced for hobbyists. A vice works PERFECTLY for me EVERY time. Just don't over-do it and crush it! Hmmm... this one isn't too bad: www.showmecables.com/idc-ribbon-crimp-tool ...and here's something in the price range I recall form yester-year: www.te.com/usa-en/product-58074-1.html

Excellent tutorial John. Very much appreciated. This gave me the confidence to make up the cable "properly" rather than a soldered bodge that I had been using.

Always avoided them for some reason. Will give it a go next time I make up some connectors. Very useful. Thanks!

For small connectors, (10 pin) I've used a C clamp, or a vise grip pliers. But the vise is a good idea. Put the cable in the connector so pin 1 is on the right cable lead AND when the cable is plugged into the board it will come out of the connector away from the board. If you put the clamp on the cable so that the cable reverses direction, then put the cable in the connector so it goes toward the board. But that's only if you want it to look neat.

When I make this type of cable, I find it easier to use a 10 wire ribbon and peel back the tenth and clip it about an inch from the DB9 connector. It makes the alignment on the header much less fussy. Also, when crimping the D-Subs in a vice, having a matching connector (non-IDC type is better) plugged into it prevents deforming the shell.

Great ideas!! I've been using wood blocks to protect the shells... but using a matching connector is a great idea!

RJ-11 and RJ-45 are also IDC. I have terminated many an ethernet cable! At least these dont require a special tool...

Nice. If one pin is unused on the pcb you could cut it out, and then fill the corresponding hole in female connector with some epoxy. Cheaper than shrouded connector with key slot and harder to plug wrong way.

What is the DB9 connecting to? Does your PC have a DB9 connection? Mine does not. Do I need to convert DB9 to USB? As a Raspberry Pi newbie, I am not able to understand what is going on here. But I am truly loving this series of videos. Thanks in advance.

I connect my retro console to a usb-serial adapter that has a DB9 on it.

@@JohnsBasement Ah, mystery solved. My intuition was leading me in the right direction. I actually have a DB9 to USb cable. Once I get the parts to build the IDC cable I can hook everything up and go through the testing videos again. Yes, I got the Z80 and programmer boards built; got the blinky sketches to work and I am going through the CPM videos. Your command of this material and your passion about it is inspiring.

That's not a DB-9, that's a DE-9. Yeah, that might seem pedantic, but when you end up opening your post to find a DE-15 connector instead of the DA-15 you were looking for, you're realise how useful it is to correctly specify the shell size. (Yes, this has actually happened to multiple people I know.)

@@Curt_Sampson 😂... Yeah. I mentioned that in one of my vids. I called them all DB-something for decades! Only recently did I notice it was DB, DE,... Too many letters sound similar I guess
