Assassin's Creed Origins In 2023: A True Masterpiece

Ойындар

Assassin's Creed Origins is one of the greatest open world games in recent times. it may not be a traditional Assassin's Creed game which is what drives a lot of people away from the game. Despite it currently being 2023 and the game came out 6 years ago, it's still a masterpiece.

Assassin's Creed Origins is a 2017 action-adventure video game developed and published by Ubisoft. It is the tenth major installment in the Assassin's Creed series and the successor to 2015's Assassin's Creed Syndicate. Set in Ancient Egypt near the end of the Ptolemaic period (49-43 BC), the story follows a Medjay named Bayek of Siwa and his wife Aya, and explores the origins of the centuries-long conflict between the Hidden Ones-forerunners to the Assassin Brotherhood-who fight for peace by promoting liberty, and The Order of the Ancients-forerunners to the Templar Order-who desire peace through the forced imposition of order. Featuring a large open world, Origins adopted elements from role-playing video games and incorporated an overhauled "hitbox-based" combat system.
The game's development began following the release of Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag (2013). Ubisoft Montreal led its four-year development with help from a team of nearly 700 people from other Ubisoft studios around the world. The team consulted Egyptologists and historians extensively to ensure the setting was authentically represented in the game. While Assassin's Creed had been an annual franchise since Assassin's Creed II (2009), an extra year of development time allowed the team to polish the game further. This was largely a response to the tepid sales of Syndicate, and the troubled launch of Unity, which was plagued with technical issues when it was released in 2014.
Announced at E3 2017, Origins was released on October 27, 2017, for Windows, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. It received positive reviews from critics, with many calling it an improvement over previous entries and praising the story, characters, voice acting, reworked gameplay systems, world design, historical accuracy and the visuals. The game drew criticism for its pacing, quest design, and technical issues. The game has sold over ten million units worldwide and was nominated for several end-of-year accolades. Ubisoft supported the game extensively following its launch, releasing two paid expansions and Discovery Tour, a series of guided tours for educational purposes. A sequel, Assassin's Creed Odyssey, was released in October 2018.
Assassin's Creed Origins is an action-adventure stealth game played from a third-person perspective. Players complete quests-linear scenarios with set objectives to progress through the story. Outside of quests, the player can freely roam the open world environment on foot, horseback, camel-back, horse-drawn vehicles or boat.[1][2] The open world includes all of Egypt, featuring vast deserts, oasis, lakes and ancient cities such as Alexandria and Memphis.[3][4] Bayek can dive underwater and explore the lakes and the rivers, a first for the series.[5] As the players explore the world, they encounter different non-playable characters who need assistance from Bayek. These side missions, which typically involve rescuing prisoners, defeating enemies, collecting items or investigating items of interest,[6] often take Bayek to locations of interest, where the player can find treasures.[7] Throughout the game, players can explore tombs and pyramids, raid bandit hideouts, solve riddle puzzles to find rare loot, and discover synchronization points, which then unlock additional locations of interest and serve as fast travel points.[8][9]

I’ve been playing Origins for the first time recently. This game would have been a masterpiece if it was half the size and they cut back on the bloat. I don’t know if I want to even finish Origins just because I’m so sick of these open worlds with a million ? marks all over constantly drawing me away from what I was doing only to be another rinse and repeat activity like a bandit camp or croc lair. It makes exploring feel like a chore to clear each ? on my map. I completely forget what happened in the main story because I get side tracked for 3 hours in between missions only to realize I spent 3 hours doing the same activities over and over just to make sure I cleared most of the points of interest in between missions. Origins has great gameplay, the world is breathtaking and so cool to look at, the RPG elements are fun, the story (when I remember what’s going on) is engaging and well written. But why couldn’t all of those positive aspects be put into a game that’s much more focused and hand crafted? I would much prefer a smaller world that has engaging, hand crafted side content and exploration that leads to more unique things. When you realize 80% of Origins map is just enemy camps, animal lairs, viewpoints, and loot locations with a chest or two, you start to see how repetitive and grindy the gameplay loop is. Sorry this is long I don’t expect anyone to read all of it but it helps me to rant and write my thoughts down because I’ve been feeling very conflicted about this game. I want to love it, a lot of aspects are phenomenal. But Ubisoft doesn’t respect my time. I’d prefer a 30-40 hour, tighter, more focused and hand crafted experience over the 80-100+ hours id have to spend getting through the sheer size and amount of bloating this game has.

I did play it for the first time in 2023. And I can tell you it is an excellent game and the graphics and game play are top notch. I do have a small few criticisms but are not worth saying because I would score this game at 95% or above and could be a matter of opinion.

I never wanted to play this or the next one as I randomly got Valhalla first, as mirage is coming out I thought I’d try and give origins a go a week ago and I completed the main quests within about 30 hours, I’m gunna do lots more before I play the next one but I’m so glad I played it. I never liked the fact they’d changed how it was played but I’ve come to prefer this game over the old ones

It’s probably the perfect open world that to me rivals red dead’s open world. What makes red dead miles ahead is the grounding of the players character to the open world and the different ways the player can interact with the world and all its assets. This is the only fault I had with Origins , Bayek felt like he lived on the world instead of in it. They had such a perfect foundation for an open world but then failed to ground the player in it. A simple example is how UBI and many games seem to be so afraid to ground their characters with light survival elements, favoring convenience for convenience sake. Think of this, you can run from edge to edge in both origins and red dead 2, but one will feel like a journey and be immersive while the other will just be a straight mindless run. This is the difference, to run from edge to edge is possible for Arthur but you’ll have to prepare before hand and take into account different things. You’ll have to lightly manage your cores , which is just enough to feel immersive and not intrusive. In Origins, Bayek can just run straight and climb almost everything. This convenience guts immersion in what would otherwise be an engaging activity. I remember how I felt when I first left Siwa to go to Alexandria passing through the desert. I was in awe, but the fact that I could just whistle get on the horse and full sprint across it all made it a little underwhelming. I felt kind of disappointed, after I was done ogling at the scenery. I think if the game grounded Bayek more, like how Arthur was, it would feel so much more rewarding to just travel. Rockstar proved that adding light survival mechanics in order to ground the player in open worlds makes people care and feel most immersed even in something as simple as traversing from town to town.

I know exactly what you mean. But the thing with RDR2 is its so perfect that it sets the expectations too high. I don't think the two are comparable imo.

  • @Kimkong2

@@TheHiddenOne690 That’s true. RDR2 really messed my expectations, it raised the bar too high. But I do hope that it shows other devs that a little grounding can go a long way. I personally think that’s usually all thats missing from many UBI games to make them great. I really believed AC origins was the closest, they really had that open world down. I’ve never seen such detail coupled with scale. The NPCs were some of the most impressive UBI have made, and they worked for that scale. Thinking about it makes me want to get back then i remember Bayek only has 2 ways to interact with the world, traverse and attack. I can’t explain how modern UBI games feel, it feels like I have a dev kit or mod on my character because they give so much to the player and in such a blatant way in the name of convenience and freedom.

I'd love if they would have added a survival mode like in skyrim for its 10 years, an optional one. I would love to go and live in the world and have to fish or buy bread and sleep somewhere ❤

@@valeriaornano9883 Right ? That would go a long way. I remember Bayek actually had a home in Siwa but in the beginning of the game he says something like “I don’t need it anymore” or something like that to which I was like “huh?”. It would be cool and grounding to have some kind of home base to return to.
