    Very interesting hinge assemblies. I really thought that new hinges were in order. Too bad that has to go back to the customer, what that laptop needs is a new loving home. 😹

    Hi Graham! I have an older HP G62 which had an i3 370M CPU and the hinge mounts were totally busted up by the previous owner, I got it for $20. I then bought another HP G62 (for the case/hinges) which is in great condition with the same processor for $25 CAD. I also bought an CPU to upgrade my laptop to a i5 540M for $17 on eBay which also has a better Video GPU which is the basic Intel HD Graphics on the die that is a little better than the i3 370M variant which has the express 965 GPU chip. I also had a 500GB SSD sitting around which only runs at SATA-II speeds on this laptop but is far superior to a SATA-II platter drive. So now I have a more or less a mint HP G62 with a chassis/case that is in great condition, and a faster CPU (about 15-18% faster and a SSD. I also just got a brand new 5 hour battery brand new on Amazon for $22 CAD. So for about $120 I got a fairly decent Laptop (not good for gaming beyond the Project 64 Emulator or older DOS games. But intended on just using it for basic office stuff and internet/KZread etc. I got the idea from your chassis replacement videos, But it took some time to get the best possible deal on used parts. Thanks for the Inspiration. Cheers!

    There are many varying opinions to refurbishing old hinges. I tend to go the lubrication route and then use threadlocker compound to make sure the hinge screws won't come loose again, but other arguments can be made that it can overtighten the hinges and rip the threads out especially if you were to take it apart again before the compound loses its grip. As for Acer laptops, that is what I find as well. Some of them after a refurbishment job turn out to be genuinely useful and not bad for the money, while others may be permanently stuck with a low end Pentium or Celeron and will always be a potato.

    For cleaning i also use car shampoo with wax. It comes in bottles and i prepare it myself in a spray device used from window cleaning solution. Usually 3-5 bottle caps at around 700-1000 ml water. You will need a liquid shampoo - do not use ones that have honey texture. Using this products will also leave a very nice plastic shine because of the wax and will also protect it for few months 😁

    The best cleaner I've ever used is my own mix of tap water (or deionised water), homebrew ethanol and a tiny amount of washing up liquid mixed in (a few drops, not much). It's much better than most glass cleaner formulations and doesn't leave any streaks. The ethanol has to be around around 40-55% to work the best. Best of all, it's cheap as chips. No need to ever buy "professional" cleaners ever again.

    I was wondering if it was going to be economically viable to repair when I first saw it. I’m now of a thought that this would have been cheaper than upgrading the RAM or hard disk. I'm presuming your client was aware of the ding in the top, that they were after better not perfect? I know you’re far too professional not to mention it and discuss the pros and cons with your client. I’m guessing this has been in a tough working environment and not sitting safely on a side in a little old lady's bungalow. I used to set up a photography studio at the charity I worked for, nothing professional but it used to raise money for them. As I'm clumsy due to my disabilities I bought an Acer Aspire to work tethered. I was liable to drop it which I did several times and I didn’t want to go dropping my decent laptop. It survived about 5 or 6 years of very rough treatment only recently dying, I then proceeded to sell it off for parts including 8 Gb DDR3L ram. I'm pretty sure I got almost as much for the parts as I paid for it originally. I wouldn’t dream of trying to edit images on it, but for most non gamers there’s value this type of machine.

Getting the plastic off the sides of the screen was the worst part once done and clicked on to new one it was easy to install it. But one hinge was also broken luckily eBay was my answer with people selling parts I hate today's laptop design where they no longer have the door to the HDD/SSD or ram so you can't upgrade it with ease. They don't want you too and want you to buy a new one which for me is just causing more e-waste over time

    Repairs like this usually come in at £70-100 including my labour. So cost effective depends on the spec of the laptop. This one was worth doing I think. Sometimes people will pay to fix a cheaper laptop though, because £80 is still a lot less than the cost of a new laptop, or they don't want the trouble of switching to a new laptop. I usually steer people away from repair if the laptop is a real potato, it's not pleasant to have a customer stuck in the sunken-cost fallacy, you just feel like you're ripping them off.

  • @Adamant_IT

    I see no reason why not. I don't think WD40 will help them though, as it'll run off. Possibly a dry lube like silicone spray, or even graphite powder. I've not really tested this though, I usually just brush them down and refit. A lot of jobs like this involve replacing the hinges anyway.

    I use 99% iso, but I'm fairly confident you could drop all the way down to like, 70% rubbing alcohol and not have any issues. The water content of cleaning agents will be deionised, which reduces conductivity to the point of insignificance, and also removes the contaminants that will leave residue. I actually put this to the test a few years ago where I stuck bench power supply probes in a tray of alcohol, the glass-cleaner I use, and tap water. The alcohol, but more surprisingly the water-based glass cleaner, were both functionally non-conductive at low voltage (30v). As a control test, the tap water was passing current. Don't know that I'd trust them for high-voltage stuff, but there's no high voltage in a laptop anyway.

  • @Gersberms

    @Gersberms

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@Adamant_IT I'd like to know more about deionized water being used, I know it exists but never thought manufacturers would care enough to use that. Nice to see that you tested it, in that case you're absolutely right. One thing I don't get though, is why isopropyl alcohol leaves so much residue. I've seen it before and it just baffles me. What is in that stuff? Why can't someone sell us an alcohol cleaner that actually 100% evaporates? In labs they use, among other solvents, demineralized water and nitrogen gas to clean glassware. I'm not aware of anything else that leaves no trace at all.

  • @Adamant_IT

    @Adamant_IT

    2 жыл бұрын

    Yea I'm not sure what the answer is to that one. Aside from leaving tide marks, I find alcohol just isn't actually very good at cleaning anyway. It's more suited as a mild solvent for sticky stuff, flux residue, etc...
