Can diet coke cause cancer?
The WHO has announced that the sweetener aspartame is quote: “possibly carcinogenic”
So aspartame is found in a lot of different foods, including chewing gum, sweets and soft drinks like Diet Coke.
Aspartame is safe. But why have the IARC classified it under Group 2B, “possibly carcinogenic”? Well, it’s right there alongside aloe vera and pickled vegetables.
There is no strong evidence that aspartame causes cancer in humans at the doses that humans normally consume - that’s what the JEFCA have concluded from their data, and there’s no reason to change the existing acceptable daily intake.
For example, if a can of diet soft drink has 200-300mg of aspartame, a 70kg adult would have to drink 9-14 cans a day to exceed the acceptable limit, and even that’s nowhere near levels that would be considered dangerous, according to the current evidence.
IARC classifications reflect the strength of available scientific evidence about whether a substance can cause cancer, but they don’t consider the risk of developing cancer at a given exposure level.
