ASMR The Hanseatic League (soft spoken, map tracing)

Today, we're staying in the North for a little history trip. Following the Viking Age, a loose association of German merchants came to dominate trade in the North and Baltic Sea: the Hanseatic League.
The books are:
Putzger: Historischer Weltatlas, Kartenedition.
Hammel-Kiesow/Puhle/Wittenburg: Die Hanse.
Dollinger: Die Hanse.

    In case anyone is interested, my thesis was on whether the Hanseatic League could constitute a "national community" which would challenge the dominant idea in British historiography that national identities emerged in the late 18th and 19th centuries

    Also, Hans Holbein the Younger is a funny guy. He painted a lot of portraits of merchants and officials in the HRE and later in London, sponsored by Henry VIII. His portraits often contained very ornate backdrops and accoutrements in response to something another artist had painted in a "you think you are good at painting oil lamps? Check out this oil lamp" fashion

    Fun fact; Bergens local brewery, which is also Norways second largest brewery after Ringnes, is called Hansa. Named after the citys role in the Hanseatic League.

    Thank you so much for posting this video! I remember awhile back I had asked if you could do a video on this subject, and you didn't disappoint! I find the history of this era fascinating. I'm on vacation in Spain at the moment and almost forgot to check your weekly update but I'm glad (and pleasantly surprised) that I did! 😊

    @@MelangeASMR You are making a video on Novgorod? That's amazing! Looking forward to watching it! Oh yes the history of Novgorod is quite complicated as there are different theories and disputes (between Russian and European historians) on how it was founded and by whom. One of the most popular theories that we were taught in school was that Rurik was more or less the first ruler of Novgorod, so he can be as a starting point :) I think I read some German/Austrian researchers that wrote about Novgorod Republic, but I don't remember their names now, sorry :( In Russia the most prominent historian on Novgorod was Valentin Yanin, perhaps some of his works were translated in German/English. Hope it helped a liitle!

    Fascinating stuff! Do you think the Hanseatic League played a big part in the political/economic rise of northern Europe during the early modern period? Particularlly with Sweeden, England, and the Netherlands?

    Thanks, love to hear that! Where would you place Germany? Central Europe doesn't seem right either. (As an Austrian, anything north of like Nürnberg is basically Scandinavia.)

  • @tildisrabarberblad9816

    @tildisrabarberblad9816

    Жыл бұрын

    @@MelangeASMR No, it's absolutely part of central Europe🧐 I even have my doubts about Denmark being part of northern Europe, but I completely agree that it can all count as Scandinavia, since that refers more to culture. It's a matter of perspective and measuring distance in people, rather than space. We have this problem within Sweden; many swedes consider Sthlm to be in the north, even though about 3/4 of the area of the country are northward of that city. It's a miserable place to live, so not many do. Anyway, 😊
