    2:35 Western Sahara is a disputed territory that has been the subject of a long-standing dispute between Morocco and the Polisario Front; a Sahrawi nationalist movement that seeks independence for Western Sahara. Morocco considers Western Sahara to be part of its historical territory (before Spanish and French colonisation) while the Polisario Front wants the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic as a sovereign state. Algeria supported the Polisario Front and provided it with military and logistical support during the conflict, and because of that there is a tension between the two neighbors.

    @@MPRStig nope, since the Spanish left in 1975 and given the fact that the UN didn't start a formal process neither for the recognition of Sahrawi Republic nor for the annexation to Morocco, as of today the Western Sahara Territory results as a disputed area between Morocco, Polisario front and, in a small part, Mauritania. The Spanish "only" kept 35% of phosphate mines' rights and fishinf rights in the EEZ of Sahrawi for 10 years, back in 1975 with the signing of the Treaty of Madrid between Spain, Algeria, Morocco and Mauritania.

    3:42 Guinea-Bissau was colonized by the Portuguese actually. So was Angola, Mozambique, Cabo Verde and São Tomé and Príncipe. Other parts of central Africa were also colonized by the Portuguese, but they were taken as colonies by some other European countries (including France fondly enough) during that treaty that “split up” Africa in the late 1800s which I forget the name of right now lol

    Here’s a quote about the “Guinea”s of the world from the Economist “Etymologists dispute the earliest origins of the word “Guinea”. Some trace it to a word in Tuareg, a Berber language, for black people: aginaw. Others think it originally referred to Djenné, a trading city in modern-day Mali. In the 15th century, Portuguese sailors used “Guiné” to describe an area near what is today Senegal, and by the 18th century, Europeans used “Guinea” to refer to much of the West African coastline. As colonisers carved up the continent, many European nations controlled their own Guinea. At independence, French Guinea became Guinea, Spanish Guinea became Equatorial Guinea, and Portuguese Guinea became Guinea-Bissau.”

So, the french took senegal and the british took Gambia. Hence why, french is really spoken in Senegal and English in Gambia. Thankfully, Gambia and Senegal are bascially siblings and we even have a place called "Sene-Gambia" because of how close we are. So yeah, love to my Senegalese brethren.

    These vids have made me think about why Americans seem to have less knowledge of world geography. I mean that with affection, Angelica is doing very well. 😁 The US is massive and looks inward while the UK and Ireland are quite small and we were always looking outward. The US is filled with entertainment and distraction while for us things could often be quite mundane and boring. Then there is education and culture in general. Even with entertainment I learned so much about the world from BBC documentaries as a kid, especially the David Attenborough shows I would consume. So many of our books and shows were about exploring the world. I loved those old ladybird books and my dad's old 60s boy's adventure magazines. Even those silly Top Gear specials were about going on adventures in far off places. You end up picking up so much along the way and that would open up new avenues of interest and study. You can definitely hear some of this in the music of the Beatles as well, the way they mixed English sounds with American rock n roll and tons of other foreign influences they found interesting.

    Yeah, I feel like people often forget Portuguese colonialism despite how horrible and how much shit y’all did. I mean, tons of colonization in Africa, and part of Asia as well naturally, plus it was the Portuguese that started the transatlantic slave trade, and I believe I read somewhere that 40% of all enslaved Africans sent to the Americas were sent to Brazil, which was obviously a Portuguese colony. Actually, I’m pretty sure numerically speaking y’all were the ones that enslaved the most, so it’s funny you’re so forgotten. Plus, one, if not the last, European colonial power to give up their African colonies only doing so in 1974 after a 14 year war with the colonies.

I’m literally 22 yo…so what my fellow portuguese…not my fault… Portugal did started the colonization but also was the first to end it, and gave the Brazil, for example independence pretty “early” , compared to other European countries, 1570…that’s pretty early in history to abolish slaves… And we do learn what Portugal did back in the day, in school…

  • @reinerstitties

    @reinerstitties

    11 ай бұрын

    @@marystudy2442 I said “y’all” as in the Portuguese nation. Second of all, portugal did not abolish slavery in 1570, you guys abolished it in the mainland somewhere around the late 1700s, though that made no difference since most of your slaves were in Brazil or Africa, and Portugal only abolished slavery in their African colonies in 1869, so pretty fucking late. Furthermore, Brazil’s independence was “given”, the new Emperor of Brazil was quite literally the prince of the Portuguese royal family. Seeing as you think Portugal abolished slavery in 1570, I’m gonna go ahead and assume that last statement that “we learn about our colonial history” as fake.

    Always nice to see my country not mentioned in a bad light. Also, this is unconnected but it is funny watching the reactions of Americans when I tell them I'm Coloured. For those who don't know, Coloured just means mixed race and is a perfectly acceptable term to use.

    Liberia was a colony of the USA, it was a place where freed afro-american slaves could be more freely than in USA. And by living more freely I mean the Afro-Americans made a colonial elite while they exploited the native Africans
