ASMR Explaining a Map of the New York Subway (soft spoken)

Ойын-сауық

Today we're looking at a map of the New York subway and frankly, it held a couple of surprises for me. As it is one of the busiest underground systems in the world, there are some particularities both to how it works and how the map is designed. I thought it was really interesting and I hope you'll enjoy it too! Sleep well 🤍

I'm a New Yorker and I LOVE our subway maps, so thanks so much for doing this video! Maps are free at subway stations, so my Mom would get them and use them to make book covers for our school text books. So, even before I was navigating the subway on my own, I had a really great grasp of the system! :)

as an NYC subway nerd, this map is fascinating! There are lots of graphical touches (colors, ways of designating express trains) which have changed slightly as well as service patterns that have been altered. I can't help but weep to imagine what the rent for a nice apartment would have been back then...

I couldn’t help but smile at the irony of hearing your soothing voice describe the train scheduling system since I’ve spent so many years navigating the convoluted NYC subway as a dog walker. If only the station dispatchers/announcers had your gentle and understandable voice! On Saturday and Sunday we have what is called ‘The Weekender’-when train schedules are altered (often dramatically) so engineers can perform track maintenance. One of my small unexpected joys of living in NYC is helping confused tourists and foreigners find their way in the subway. It feels like sharing something esoteric and mysterious like alchemy.

If only indeed! I recall a few "spirited" late-night conversations with station agents regarding unannounced service changes back in the 90's, usually followed by a very long walk or expensive cab ride home. And I agree, helping those new to the system is pretty great.

It's so wild to me that the subway runs 24/7. Scheduling maintenance of any kind has to be a nightmare. I'm not surprised that there's dramatic changes all the time, but then again, I realise once more that I live in a very small city where everyone has pretty rigid ideas of how things are run correctly. Just getting the underground to run all night at the weekend took years lol. And thank you for being so kind to lost tourists, I hope I'll run into someone like you some day when I make it to NY.

slightly unrelated but i was in Germany for two weeks and some change a couple of weeks ago, and we relied a lot on Deutsche Bahn for transportation throughout the country,,,,,,i enjoyed it, but it certainly has some major drawbacks and room for improvement (hopefully Austrian trains run a little smoother LOL),,,,,,as a Chicagoan, our CTA subway system is very similar to New York City’s !! so it was a little foreign to me how the rules and regulations on Deutsche Bahn worked for interchanging trains, a lot of it was very different from what i and many other americans are used to with our trains. but it’s super cool how the train systems work, especially within big metropolitan cities !! i love these videos that you do, they are so informative and allow the ability to compare and contrast history, infrastructure and culture !!

Noooo not Deutsche Bahn! @@MelangeASMR no you definitely aren’t misunderstanding, in the states we have Amtrak as our national rail and it is still quite different from Deutsche Bahn!! there are no reserved seat features on Amtrak trains like Deutsche Bahn, and the general way in which they operate varies. we experience major delays occasionally on Amtrak’s trains as well, but usually they are right on time with a few emergency exceptions (at least in my experience). i think the longest delay we experienced with Deutsche Bahn was only like 15 minutes, and luckily we weren’t in a hurry that day LOL !! in the CTA system in chicago though, you can buy a card called a Ventra Card where you reload or purchase fares for only $2.50 i believe,,,,,but you just travel based on the line that goes to certain areas, like the NYC subway ! it’s super easy to navigate for the most part :) and thank you !! i had a wonderful time on my trip, i hope to come back again and try to visit austria and switzerland !!

All routes (B-Division) became single lettered by 1985. I have some old Subway maps a copy from 1979, 1985, and 1988 as well the maps from 90s to 2000s. 1. What do you mean by "run odd ways across the city"? Every subway system in the world have their lines travel to all kinds of places and neighborhoods in their cities as planned and designed, obviously. There is nothing "odd" about that. 2. Why do you keep calling the NYC Subway Map an "underground map"? Obviously, no true New Yorker calls the subway system "the underground". This aint London. The NYC subway system is an combo of underground, elevated, open-cut, embankment and on-surface/street leveled constructed lines and stations (you even said there are 40% of overhead lines/stations in the system) Also, nobody here in NYC calls it "overhead", but "Els" or "elevated".
