Thank you so much, as a cochlear implant tool-user, and a late acquisition of sign language in my twenties as I was not exposed to sign language until then - this is powerful because it is like living between two worlds understood by neither hearing or deaf, or so it seems. This was kind, thoughtful, and a well made video. Thank you!

Thank you for sharing such a personal view. There is so much talk about having implants, or remaining within the deaf community without them. I believe it's a personal decision, and should not be judged.

I understand, I'm HOH loosing more hearing, but I'm mostly fine with that. I'm learning Asl, teaching what I know to my daughter. I have now some friends of the Deaf community. Recently I learn there's some surgery that might restore some of my hearing. My hearing husband and all my family are so MAD when I said I'm not interested, it's likely that I will loose my hearing again. I don't want to deal with that twice. There's nothing wrong to be HOH or deaf.

I have a similar experience. I also feel that being hoh is not the end of the world. We are okay.

I was offered Cochlear Implants. However, the doctor told me that my residual hearing would be destroyed when they put the implants in. I can hear some but not a lot with hearing aids. I read lips mostly. I didn't want to lose what hearing I had. I hate the way those magnet thingys look. So, I decided that implants weren't for me.

Watching this as a hearing person with zero sound is sad. I could not stand not hearing sound Music or sounds of our dogs & cats birds etc.

I wish I could learn ASL---every time I try, I end up mirroring what the person in front of me does and it comes out backwards. Every. Time. There has to be some kind of side-by-side instruction available right?

By the way - Can they (deaf) become from hearing? I would say yes but rare, that is all.Keep it up.

One thing I have learned is the devices they have in a lot of countries are old devices. They are about 4 generation back & that is why most people who had CI are older model due to FDA or government will not allow to sell them to the consumer that allows to have the best device “political” part. They selling CI’s that are old & for a lot more money like $150,000 which is robbery when other countries is $5,000-$10,000. We found out about it more in Turkey how a lot of countries do not tell the patients what they are having implanted and what is out there because discussing it is “illegal” it’s like having a tv back from 50’s vs the tv we have available now. A patient cannot tell the difference if a patient don’t know what is out there and what is available, then you would not know the difference.. If you have proper knowledge let’s say a car and someone took the car apart and painted over then the person is trying to sell you the machine. Whatever they pitch you sounds good & whatever may happen like the cons you try to think that is all to offer. That is exactly what is going on in U.S. Japan and other countries. Japan is really against CI or hearing devices with surgery. I did did not mind if my son will ever hear. I have taught my eldest ASL since he was born & when my second was born and we found out he was profoundly deaf of course as a parent i was heartbroken but the ASL was already in there and i was ok with that. But when I see my son put his finger in his ear and sign i don’t hear. Or he pretends to be a musician playing guitar or drum immitating his brother and signs that he cannot hear the music. All i can sign back it is ok and let him feel the vibration. That is when being a parent becomes harder. When my child had his CI a few weeks ago & had his CI activated & when he smiled at us when he heard his dad’s voice is something no one can ever take away that joy he had. But it is a personal choice. But if anyone wanted to do CI “you really” have to do a hard extensive research what is out there. The model, what type of hearing lost you have, how were you tested because “A lot” of Doctor’s do missed diagnosed people and used different techniques that is against FDA requirements. An experience Ontroloygist who perhaps is professor would have a lot of experience and knowledge in this field. What DB and HZ you have, you need to do MRI & Cat scan “no matter what” Even cochlear companies will not discuss certain devices unless you asked a specific device. Because of FDA regulation will not allow them to discuss due to illegal part which soo horrible. Do a lot of research and asking. Countries that has up to date devices “Turkey, Iran, Austria, Australia and Canada”

Yes I agree. Hearing Implants is good for who has hearing loss for any reason cuz they know many sounds just before they loss their hearing. Deaf baby, young child and Adults never heard of sounds before Hearing Implants that will confuse them. I was born hearing till 2 1/2 years old I became Deaf and wear body hearing aids. It wa back in 1960’s. When I was teenager, my mother wanted me to have hearing implants. I told her no cu I’m happy with my hearing aids behind my ears. I can hear the sounds like dark barking,, phone rings and foil folding, I went speech therapy twice a day when I was in elementary school. My mother wanted me to be like hearing. It’s not work for me. So anyway, that’s my opinion about hearing implants.
