Asking questions, running queries

Ғылым және технология

Running queries is one of the most fundamental ways to gain valuable insights from your data. In this episode of BigQuery Spotlight, we’ll show you how to write and run SQL queries in the BigQuery UI.. Watch as we use public data to determine which NCAA jersey number has the best basketball stats from the three-point line. You can even follow along in your own BigQuery sandbox for free!

Is COUNTIF funcfion a unique feature of BigQuery? I have not seen such a function in other dialects of SQL.

The video is a bit oudated as the GCP has changed its UI for BigQuery (and also many other services). As of Jan 8, 2023, I can see the data after adding the data through the 'Analytics Hub' tab (you also have to enable the API).

I am unable to find the tables for the dataset in the example in this video. That option is not available on my screen. When I open the dataset, all I see is the Dataset Info. My options are to "Create Table", "Sharing", or "Copy". Did I click on the wrong thing?

You can execute multiple statements separated by semicolons. Here's an example: github.com/GoogleCloudPlatform/training-data-analyst/blob/master/blogs/bqblog/2019-10/multiple_statements.md

For the second question, do you mean customer-managed encryption keys? If so, yes, you can use partitioning with CMEK. More on CMEK here: cloud.google.com/bigquery/docs/customer-managed-encryption

Instead of clicking "Explore public datasets", try clicking "Pin a project" and typing in bigquery-public-data. This should add all the public datasets to your resources tree. The "Explore public datasets" button is still the best place to find more information on each public dataset including example queries. Just a workaround in case it's not launching!

look for "public" on the tab to the left, once you find no results, click "extend search", first result should be Google's public datasets. pin it, then you should have it in on the explorer tab (to the left). once this is done, just select the google public project you just pinned and you should be able to add the public datasets now. if you still can't then try looking for the public dataset you want on the explorer tab above your projects.

Click "Pin a project" in the left hand nav of the BQ console and then type 'bigquery-public-data'. Let me know if this doesn't get you there for any reason!

Projects with their datasets (and their tables) can be found in the Explorer section of the Console: cloud.google.com/bigquery/docs/bigquery-web-ui#overview. If you don't see the project where your dataset lives, you can add/pin it: cloud.google.com/bigquery/docs/bigquery-web-ui#pinning_adding_a_project

  • @aliciawilliams5520

@@keliu2313 The dataset is hosted in the 'bigquery-public-data' project (owned by Google Cloud), which you can pin by clicking '+Add Data' in the BigQuery Console, and then providing 'bigquery-public-data' as the project name, then click 'Pin'. Official instructions for pinning a project here: cloud.google.com/bigquery/docs/bigquery-web-ui#option_2_select_from_a_list_of_projects. Once 'bigquery-public-data' is pinned, click to the left on the expand node icon (little triangle) which will show all the datasets, including 'ncaa_basketball'. If you click on the expand node icon next to the dataset, then you will see all the tables in the dataset listed.

#45 has a high percentage because it does not shoot that much. Don't jump to conclusions quickly as more analysis should be done. 🙂 I understand that the goal of the video is to show how to use BigQuery to run queries, and the goal is achieved.

How are you running the query (console, command line, API)? Make sure you are running it from a project that you have permission to run queries in (and not in the bigquery-public-data project).
