MIT, more than most colleges in the US, has to be a good fit to be worth it. As hard as it is to get in, it is harder to get out. It mainly works because the students who do get in continue to develop their academic maturity year by year.

Thanks so much for making us believe in ourselves because sometimes we all lose hope but we all need it regained and you did just that! :D

Let me summarize the entire video for you: If you got more than 1 B throughout the entirety of highschool, don't bother applying. If you got below a 1500 on the SAT, don't bother applying. If you didn't do tons of extra curricular activities, don't bother applying. It's the type of school for people who had their entire lives planned out already when they were in middleschool.

Im in junior year rn and im in Canada. In grade 9 i got a lot of 70s and 80s and in grade 10 it was better but still just 80s. In g11 second semester, I have over 95 in every subject except IB ENglish which is a 90. I want to go to a good university like MIT but my gpa is really on the lower end because of my fuckups from freshman and sophomore. idk if this is going to bring my application chances lower. It's dumb that even your past grades can affect your uni chances. It's really discouraging but I heard they weigh your g11 and g12 grades more plus look at the bigger picture and see how youve improved. Idk i felt like commenting this cause one of the guys mentioned he had ONE B in freshman when i have like 5

it also depends on what you applying, some major is harder to get in. for engineering major in MIT, you need to have activities to support, club, math, sport competitions. RCM8 exam, math tutoring , etc. if you never gone in gifted school, and dont have this extra activity to support, it can be a bit too late . math competitions can be the short cut. but after all, research and apply, write a good letter to them, you will never know ;-)

You like to see how things work, that combined with a good work ethic and you will find something. Don't forget money isn't the be all end all, working with your hands can be infinitely rewarding no matter what the title of the job is. Do your job, be nice to everyone and things will open up for you. I'll leave you with this story. I had a friend moved out to one of the Rocky mountain states about 40 years ago. She had no college and got a job as a building inspector in a small town. A few months after she was hired she was sitting in the bosses office and asked him " why did you hire me. " He said I'm glad you asked me that, I had a pile of applications some from people with masters degrees, you were the easiest to talk to and had a lot of common sense and listened. She worked that job for 25 years...........

no need to be salty. the video interview is kinda short, but these kids very well may be winning top awards that have impressed the admissions officers. don't blame everything on DEI. plus, everyone knows that just a perfect SAT/GPA won't get you anywhere---you'll need outstanding extracurriculars (clubs that make an impact, projects that win prizes, winning awards at competitions, etc.) to get into the top schools in the U.S.

You sound pretty stubborn. edit: MIT's proportion of Asian undergrads went up in the past 10 years. 25% to 40% jump. a lot more than other races. most races have either increased in proportion, or remained relatively stable. a school needs to have diversity regardless of affirmative action or not.

@@angelaz2576 @angelaz2576 You say a school needs diversity. What percentage of each race/ethnicity should a school have? Black, white, latino, Indian, African, Pacific Islanders, Asian, Eskimo, Pakistani, Iranian, Saudi, etc..? And here's a piece of advice, don't resort to name calling simply because you disagree with a person's opinion. It's a sign of a weak mind. Opposing DEI admissions in favor of better qualified candidates doesn't make a person "stubborn." It means that they are principled and believe that the same standards should apply to everyone equally, regardless of skin color, race, sexual orientation, etc. I'm looking forward to your answer so that you, clearly an expert on college admissions and the need for diversity, can explain the exact percentage of each race/ethnicity a perfectly balanced school should have.

@@user-en7dx3hs2w oh boy, why are you so mad? I mean I guess I get it because your son didn't get into MIT. a lot of students didn't either, and plenty of them have a 4.0 GPA and 1600 SAT. what makes your son stand out? and does that make the students who are at MIT less qualified? do you really think MIT just goes RNG some 2.0 GPA racial minority to admit? mind you, the majority of the MIT students also have a perfect or near perfect GPA and a near perfect SAT score. also, if the same exact standards should be applied to everyone, wouldn't those who are economically disadvantaged, who didn't have the resources and connections to get into a lab in high school and win ISEF awards, not be able to get into top schools and get good education easily? then what do you do with those people in society? let them rot in poverty generation after generation? and when did I ever say a school needs a perfect diversity? all they need to be doing is giving opportunities to students who they think are doing well given the influence from society (there’s clearly less non-white models for them to look up to), influence from family (less likely for someone to pursue say a path in engineering when their parents are restaurant workers), and the opportunities given to them in the first 17/18 years of their lives (some may be in a school that offers no AP classes). And a piece of advice for you, an anonymous parent online, is to be nice to kids online. you don’t want other parents to attack your child for being “not qualified” to wherever he’s going to college just because he showed up on a youtube video. direct your complaints to the college admissions office if you may.
