Wait, this gave me hope that grades and SAT/ACT scores do not matter that much in your admission decision! Admissions are done very holistically and they generally admit you as a person in whole and not just grades. I mean all the scientists weren't toppers. They are failed miserably but aced their career in their own field of interest. So, 2023 group we all got this! Don't loose hope! ❤️ You never know what is waiting for you in the surprise box✨

@@erikumble yes! Due to the pandemic most of us couldn't participate in any kind of extracurricular activities. Myself dint participate in any in complete 2 years. But I do have some extracurriculars which I did before the pandemic. And essays are a great way to project yourself to the admissions committee. You have to work hard on those essays. Just be genuine and realistic about your life. They would love it! We got this! ❤️
First MIT student, I am watching on KZread, who is not a Robot😂 Really appreciate your realistic advices 💙
I think the fact you framed yourself as a specialist in environmental science really helped. That's also maybe the reason the 2 in Chem didn't matter so much. Colleges tend to not look for all-around good students. They want academic diversity by looking for students who show a strong interest and activity in a single subject.

Colleges definitely care about your ability to succeed in more than one area. He kind of said it, but being an “all around good student” is more like the bare minimum for highly selective schools. Colleges want people who can become leaders in their field, and be famous and successful alumni in the future. He was 0.03 points away from a 4.0. He’s not just a specialist. He proved that he can succeed anywhere, but he thrives in one subject. I’m assuming your 2 in chem was amongst a generally good academic record, and that you were doing ok in classes outside of your chosen subject. Highly selective colleges wouldn’t take someone who’s really good at one thing and garbage at everything else, unless they’re _uniquely_ good at it, which most high schoolers aren’t.

Harvard application is free. Look up Harvard fee waiver, you can just ask for a waiver and they’ll grant it
Yas. When Ivy schools offered that SAT and ACT scores are no longer required, I took FULL advantage of that. My ACT score was 29 so I definitely didn't want to send that. I did NOT take the SAT because I have a hatred for CollegeBoard. With these criteria missing, I was able to juxtapose myself with really good AP scores and grades, and that's the story of my Princeton application journey. You don't have to be perfect or anywhere near that for these schools, just prove that you're really good at some things and express your ambitions at these Ivy Leagues😊

@Knowledge God Well, I wouldn't say that they completely don't matter, but if you're planning on attending a top IVY league school in the US, you need to have something else besides grades. Since you're pretty intelligent, participating in competition related to your interest would be good. dw, you got a good chance, find good colleges to apply and you'll get in.
Thank you for thisss! 😭😭😭 Literally gave the best tips and advices. This really took a lot of stress away
your thought on the ACT is so relatable😂 looking forward to see your MIT vlogs!
in regards to the ACT/SAT, i totally agree that they’re not going to be your everything when applying to college, which is why i didn’t buy any study materials. i got a 32 by using online practice tests from previous years and treating them like a real test, and then going over and reviewing questions i missed to think about them in a different way. the more you do it, the more familiar you‘ll be with the test itself and how to solve different types of problems without needing to spend your money on practice books you’ll never open again
It feels so amazing when someone actually talks about the cold hard truth about college admission journey. Thanks a lot!
Great video. I love how realistic you are. Congratulations on getting into these schools! Also, I spotted the bts proof album, and it's really nice that you have it.
this is so realistic thank you so much because everyone on youtube is a total robot and it makes it hard to watch these videos so thank you for being honest and humble! good luck at mit!!
i love love love this video and all of your suggestions abt college application (which I'm very stressed about rn) pls never delete this TT thank you so much for sharing your experiences and thoughts!!! very very appreciated :)
This is quite inspiring. I always MIT only take gold medalist in Olympia (William Lin KZreadr), or ppl doing research with famous professor etc. But it shows caring on what you do is important, even just influencing your local community. I also sucked at sat but never knew about act in my high school days.. sad. Your leadership is quite impressive too

Yeah, colleges want a diverse group of students, so they want people who have all sorts of experiences. But whether you choose to compete in academic competitions or impact your community through leadership, colleges want to see your passion and genuine interest in whatever you choose to do.
At first, I wanted to be salty because of your results... but you are such a likeable person. Congratulations, my dude -- you clearly worked really hard to get where you are. I sincerely wish you all the best in college and beyond.

Very honest and practical video. Thank you!
Thanks Nathan, this was very helpful!
He was being super strategic in terms of putting together an application file that is consistent with the major he applied as. This again confirms the theory that the subject you apply as does matter in terms of chances of admission.

Start a community club or a chapter in your community or you can found one at school (ik a lot of teachers may not be willing to sponsor but at least try everyone and ask upperclassmen which teacher you should ask to sponsor) you can also start a club and the only thing you need to be a member is a group chat

@@Ghost-om1dqBut what if you’re interested in multiple things of which you have absolutely no knowledge in? Plus leadership in clubs? What do you even do as president? What activities? And socializing with strangers and make acquaintances with them??? Nooooooo! Heck, there’s basically a club for everything in my school, what are ideas!? Also what do I do if the (astronomy) club I wanted to join and have no knowledge of isn’t active because there isn’t a sponsor for it? Also I have low stress tolerance, like freakishly low, and have no study skills whatsoever, and English and Korean 1 is currently tying a noose round my neck because I can’t memorize 200 words within 2 units and I keep looking at the underlying meaning of the words instead of at the words itself when annotating.

hey!! i'm a foreign sophomore high school student, and your video inspired me a lot (and you also seem like a really nice person!!). in my country we don't have this amount of exams (sat, act, gmat and maybe sum other while i have only егэ, though егэ tests are for every subject and you pick the ones you need, just like subject sat), i don't know wth is AP classes (well, i've just googled it, so i do know) and our ECs aren't in school, only in outside world (though that's ok). but, heh, recently, i've developed a dream of getting my chem bachelor's degree in mit. and i'm ripping my ass for this dream. i'm working hard as hell to pass your sat and toefl,, writing as much essays, as they need. and i still continue working for my communities!! thanks for showing that i don't need to win nationals at chem olympiads, though i will try :)) upd in December 2023!!: i took third place in the international competition in ecology and i have a really big result in my DET, although i kinda failed sat. i also became a prez and founder of the ecology club in my school and i'm now holding a chemistry class for primary school kids. and i got a juniour nurse certification, held a class of health awareness in my school later. i started participating in various chem Olympiads and now i'm trying to find a research opportunity in drug delivery. man. without my goal i don't think i would have done it all. it's so nice to have a such a big dream, and i'm thankful for your video. it just motivated me so much by showing that it's possible
This is so useful thank you so much
congratulations! you seem so cooooolllll

Try to find extracurriculars outside of school like maybe join a online club/organization as a high schooler, you can also publish your own research in a journal that takes submissions from high schoolers, you can also apply for online competitions where you just submit a video or power point/word document you can also volunteer!
You are so funny 😃Video was just amazing 🔥🔥🔥

Weighed gpa matters more, I think your gpa is out of a 5 scale - your extracurriculars are super impressive, it’s extensive- during last year (freshman year) I only focused on my grades, I am the salutatorian for now but honestly, I don’t feel like colleges would care much - doing extracurriculars related to your major would be the most beneficial
nice video very informative 👍

I have a quick question. I have a lot of ECs and stats similar to Nathan and I am an upcoming sophomore but I was in a lot of clubs in freshman year but as time went, somethings happened and I wasn't that much of a member anymore in the clubs. Since I'm not as active, I cannot apply for any officer positions currently but I am planning to in sophomore year and do better. Would that still be okay if I am not an officer right at the beginning of sophomore year?

question did you apply Early decision or early action anywhere?
Hey, thank you for such an amazing video! I have a question though. What would you recommend I do as EC's if I'm planning to do Biochemistry or biotechnology in uni? To be honest, I have a lot of leadership, debates, sports and MUN's but I don't have anything that directly relates to what I'm planning to pursue. It kinda worries me which is why I need some help. I think your ECs should have at least science-related activities that can potentially match to your passion because in my belief, I took a lot of ECs related to computer science (yeah coz that's what I planned to major it), but only that I did, I also involved in different fields such as environmentalism clubs, activism councils, MUN's, acting, and many more.
