My Japanese wife and I have been together for almost 40 years. She was the first Japanese exchange student living in a small town in Montana. Her host mother just happened to be my favorite aunt and the first time we met, we stayed up all night just talking together happily. We’ve been married 36 years now and have 3 grown children. We still can’t be separated from each other for very long. It’s a very strong bond we share and for this we are forever thankful. It’s not often one finds a true soulmate. ❤

I met my wife who is Japanese 4 years ago. Just like the couples in this video it was just before covid happened. Fortunately for us she was in Australia at the time so she ended up living with me before we even got married. This helped us get to know one another because we were around each other 24/7. My advice for couples is to make a big effort to learn about your partners culture. Don’t assume anything that the person is thinking and always be curious. Relationships are perceived differently depending on where you are born, so have that open communication. Always be patient with one another because it can be challenging but there is so much to gain by putting in your best efforts.

I think the first guy who said "spend some time in your partner's country" is spot on. I'm Welsh and my wife is Finnish, we met in Hudderfield and lived there for the first year of our relationship, and she'd already lived there for a year before we met. So she definitely knew British (if not Welsh) culture. Then we moved to Finland in 1999 and it gave me a much better idea of her culture and upbringing. Being here and reading about Finnish history, and classic Finnish literature (though to be fair in translation). I've been in Finland 25 years now, and it's much more my home than the UK these days. My kids are Finnish, my wife is Finnish, how could it ever feel "foreign" under those circumstances?

  • @xiaoka

an addition to that is - "be prepared to live in your partner's country permanently" - someone is going to have to sacrifice if you're going to stay together. It might have to be you. Meaning someone's probably going to have to sacrifice their career plans, closeness to family, etc.

Like most of your videos, this was interesting to watch and listen to these views. I've been in a long distant relations and one technically was foreign - my living in the US and she lived in Canada. And yes, I did visit her there many times. But today we are no together. I do now live in Canada, but out west as she lived in eastern Canada. We broke up about 4 years prior to me relocating to western Canada. Anyway, long distance relationship are not easy, but obviously some work and some don't. At least you live and learn.

My introduction to international relations was on a project where we planned to demonstrate the conversion of coal to a liquid fuel usable in automobiles. Japan provided a team and Germany provided a team and the USA provided a team. I had to coordinate the preparation of estimates and budgets. Every company, much less country, has their own accepted standards and rules for putting together estimates. I found the experience VERY interesting and grew to really enjoy working with the Japanese and German team members! No romance but the lessons I learned to navigate the cultural and organizational differences undoubtedly helped me when I developed a contract management class at a NASA center (with employees from all over the earth), and when I married a Filipina 20 years later. At least that is what I reflected back to when listening to your interviews.

Really enjoyed the interview with Sora the Troll, I thought it was a better than expected chemistry between Takashii and Sora.

Great to interview people on the street always fresh comment guranteed despite that hope everyone feel confortable (thinking about my own social anxiety…)

Just to put that into perspective, I do think the interviews were arranged beforehand and some of the interviewees are content creator themselves, random people on the street would definitely be less eloquent on average ;)

Great advice from the couples showing that if you want something to work then all you gotta do is try hard at it. It seems though that Takashi was so uncomfortable standing and stretching the mic to his interviewees

I am dating a Japanese guy but we are not in a relationship. Our dates are like once a month with little communication in between lolWe met in a city in America. He from Japan, I’m from another part of America we both came here for work. I’m new to this city, he has lived here on and off for over 5 yrs. I think it’s hard to understand him sometimes. This video reminded me that he might be asking me some questions with an intention that I never noticed. For example, he asked me more then once, how much I like this city and if I want to stay here and now I realize he might be trying to see if our paths align. One time we had a date and he had to leave for a meeting but I told him my best friend is coming to meet me. He asked me a lot about her and I just answered without thinking too much of why he’s asking. then he said “she seems really important to you” and then he waited for her to come so he can meet her even though he was late for his meeting.
