Ask Your Questions About Japanese Dance!

Ойын-сауық

The traditional dancer Chinami Hananomoto (@nihon-buyo-japan) has been so kind as to accept to answer for us a few questions about Japanese dance, her journey as a traditional performer, and the relationship between nihon buyō and kabuki. So, if you are curious about any aspect of Japanese dance, please leave the questions that you have in mind in a comment below!
The result will come out in the form of two videos, one here and another one in her KZread channel, most likely in early or mid August. I hope you all enjoy it!
Please check out her wonderful channel focused on traditional dance (and her online nihon buyō classes!), and show your support by subscribing and watching her videos!

I have three cheeky questions, but will be very happy if even one is answered- thank you so much for giving us the opportunity to ask, KiD and Hananomoto-san! 1) Do you personally have a favourite dance to perform? If so, why? 2) Are there any prominent figures in nihonbuyo you think foreigners, and newcomers to the art form, should learn about? 3) Are the beautiful wigs worn by nihonbuyo dancers as heavy as they seem, and do they take long to get used to?

    1. We know that Nihon-buyō is closely connected with Kabuki. Among the dances that both those who are part of Kabuki and those who are part of Nihon-buyō usually perform, there are two that are quite popular among those belonging to both art styles: Kyōganoko Musume Dōjōji (also known as Musume Dōjōji) and Sagi Musume. Of these two, which is more difficult to perform? And how long does it take to learn these two dances? 2. When you have a dance where you have to change costumes quickly on stage, as is the case with the two dances I mentioned earlier (Kyōganoko Musume Dōjōji (or Musume Dōjōji) and Sagi Musume), I imagine that this technique should be taught several times so as not to have any mistakes. How long does it take to learn this instant costume changing trick (including the right timing to perform this quick costume changing trick)? 3. What are the main schools of Nihon-buyō (ie, the main existing Nihon-buyō styles)?

Could you explain what some of the movements made with a fan during the dance mean? I understand "mountain" and "sake cup" but many motions are a mystery. Thank you so for agreeing to answer questions!

How early does one typically start dancing Nihon buyo? What are the most difficult props to wield? Do you think Nihon buyo would be as popular as it is if Kabuki wasn't closed to only male performers?

Hi! How do you prepare for long dances? Is it all non-stop practice or is some of it improvised?
