This is the best and most logical advice I've heard.. really very insightful. My partner and I have several dogs and we constantly wrestle with the decisions to be made about our dogs' diets particularly whether to go grain-free, stick to regular kibble or switch to fresh foods. Thank you for sharing this video, we will stick with regular grain kibble and start adding fresh foods to our dogs diets :o)

My adopted 7 year old Samoyed male was diagnosed with Cardiomyopathy in July. His energy levels had been plummeting for months prior to the diagnosis. His food, grain free Orijen. While vendors like Orijen probably didn't know of the risks their food entailed, it's their current response which is to deny, deny, deny. They are replaying the tobacco manufacturers messaging after it was conclusive that smoking killed. Pretty darn disappointing. And no my beautiful dog's life hangs in the balance. Shame.

I agree that fresh food is best, and that we need more taurine supplements for our dogs, but I will completely disagree to any argument that suggests that grain free is necessarily bad, because there’s no proof of this correlation between this dogfood type and heart disease DCM. The FDA has already created so much panic lately (this June, it released a list of 16 brands that has since become the hottest topic in the pet food industry). It’s odd that the FDA has not issued any recalls nor formally made recommendations for a diet change, yet these supposed experts are already conditioning pet owners to do so. We need facts, not speculations and misleading blanket statements. I still maintain that there’s no valid reason to move away from grain free, since we don’t have the backing of science to truly incriminate it. We need to more discerning here, as our dogs’ health is at stake and quickly being swayed may make us unwitting pawns in a grand plot to discredit the entire industry. podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/dcm-fda-dog-food-science-hype-canine-nutritionist-linda/id597961570?i=1000446469443&fbclid=IwAR3HMDUKGBBXCmoVp2BYORp1g72kGUkZ9fO-hEjDF6Z5UFPc2IuC-cutaiw

Yes, there is a correlation with grain free dog food and DCM. And it is not just about grain free. It is about poorly formulated food. Check out this page. It is science based. Also, read up on Dr. Joshua Stern cardiologist at UC Davis and his research on this diet associated DCM. facebook.com/groups/TaurineDCM and dcmdogfood.com/

Dogs would eat grains in the wild! Not a lot, partially digested grains from killed animals that do eat grains. Such as rabbits, rats, chickens etc. And they are aleardy half digested. But just not a lot! Which grain? Defenately not wheat! But oats!!! Oats are simply amazing. My dogs being fed barf, get an oatmeal, once or twice per forthnight. Soak the rolled oats for 5-10 min in hot water. When soft, tip water out, add full cream fresh milk, 2-3 egg yolks, 1-2 tblsp natural yoghurt, some cottage cheese and voila you got a healthy grain meal. Or the left over wholemeal rice from our meals. Left over polenta. Dogs do eat grains, JUST NOT A LOT! DOES THAT MAKE SENSE?

There's nothing wrong with kibble in foods that are backed by scientific evidence that they are well balanced. What are her credentials? Is she a veterinary nutritionist? A veterinary cardiologist? Are any of these statements coming from actual veterinary professionals (doubt it)? 🙄 #1: It's a myth that the problem is a lack of Taurine in a dog. There are dogs who are being diagnosed even with normal taurine levels. There are also dogs getting nutritional mediated DCM while being fed kibble and "fresh" toppers so again, that's a myth that those dogs are necessarily safe. #2: Kibble is highly digestible and healthy when it has been proven to be (by the brands that are performing tests to prove this vs a lot of the "boutique" foods). #3: There are dogs being diagnosed that are on "homemade" and "raw" diets. Work with a board certified veterinary nutritionist (not a "pet nutritionist" with no valid credentials) to formulate a well balanced diet if that's the route you want to take, because there ARE dogs getting DCM from these diets and dogs on well balanced kibble that are NOT getting sick (DCM or otherwise) due to their food. Grain free food is a gimmick and there is no evidence that "raw" or "homemade" is healthier than a well balanced kibble.

Hi Lilla. Thank you for your comment. We are not nutritionists or claim to be. However, we work cooperatively with many veterinarians and also do our own research, that isn’t solely backed by large companies. As stated, there is MUCH more research that needs to go into why this is happening with dogs. Research is coming out each month, with the continued studies, so yes, some things have changed since last August. The bottom line is- they are living creatures, just like us. If you ate something out of a bag every day- say cereal that has all the synthetic vitamins you need- you would not be at optimum health. Living creatures need living food. Sure, science says they will “live” if eating kibble! But will they “thrive”? Or will there be a rise in kidney disease, diabetes, cancer and a whole host of issues that dogs suffer from in the 20th century? We are not saying grain-based diets are bad or that grain-free diets are not a gimmick. What we are trying to say is that fresh is best and when added to a *well-balanced diet of your choice* can make your pet healthier. There are studies out there stating this they just aren’t by these large companies because that would drive their sales down. 2005 study conducted at Purdue University showed that adding fresh vegetables to dry commercial kibble actually prevented and/or slowed down the development of transitional cell carcinoma. Stating Kibble is just as beneficial as other options is just plain incorrect. Kibble is a dry product that needs to be broken down in the body more than moisture-rich foods. Digestion is a moisture intensive process, from saliva to gastric juices. The body will pull it from other tissues and organs if necessary during digestion, temporarily leaving less for flushing toxins and general hydration. Why would something pulling so much moisture from your dog’s body be the best option? I am not sure who you are arguing for, but we are here to be advocates of all pets. We don’t say “This is what you have to do.”. We never stated kibble is bad and raw is better, like you seem to be doing. We are simply giving people options and reminding them they have a living creature in their homes that deserve more than just a dry bowl of food to keep them alive.

Dogology Canton, CT My dog and many many many others I know of (including many from show/sport breeders) are thriving just fine on kibble and living long, healthy lives while on it, thanks. The foods are well formulated. They provide dogs with everything they need, so there is no need to feed "fresh" in those cases. What's causing DCM is clearly foods that are NOT well formulated. Who am I arguing for? I'm not at all saying that kibble is the only option, but that food must be well balanced and quite frankly, most "boutique" kibble and many people feeding raw/fresh are NOT feeding a well balanced diet long term. THAT is what causes issues for dogs. The foods from brands who support research and feeding trials are the foods not causing these issues, yet there are dogs becoming ill while on fresh/raw foods. It annoys me when people turn a blind eye to these issues especially with this being a preventable cause for the disease. It's not worth the risk at this time, for me. We all love our pets so why risk their health? If you want to feed fresh/raw, that's fine but seek the help of a professional (board certified veterinary nutritionist) to formulate it properly. It's something I've done before!

Naomi Cortes I have a dog I feed Purina Pro Plan. He didn't do well on other foods I've tried whereas this one has turned everything around. I had fed my last dog a homemade diet for years that at some point I had formulated with the assistance of a board certified veterinary nutritionist for a few health issues. I always highly recommend that option to anyone who wants to feed a homemade/raw diet. They're amazing to work with!

@Devin Breedlove my last dog lived 16.5 years on Iams supermarket dog food (I didn’t know any better at the time). Point is, people worry too much about this. Dogs are scavengers and opportunistic hunters, and they’re not wolves. They have always lived with humans who have grain in their diets. My current dog is doing very well on Merrick “beef with ancient grains” dry kibble.

wolves eat the stomach contents of their prey which contains greens, Wolves don't eat carbohydrates. At all. ** As the Nature study shows, they can't even digest them effectively. And yet it has been shown that wolves travel more than 26 miles (a complete marathon) between kills.

You must be old. In the olden days, women weren't supposed to wear sleeveless. Obviously their shoulders showed too much skin. Men need to take responsibility for their sexual urges. You want us all to wear burkas? Even still, Middle Eastern Women get raped. If it bothers you, look away.

This is all just her opinion. I don’t hear any science. Millions of dogs live long happy lives on kibble. Mine lived 16.5 years on supermarket Iams. They’re not wolves, they’re not people.
