    This has been a big concern for a while now on how to price to sell and especially now with custom work as I have really begun to pick up momentum. Trying to calculate out hours has been time consuming in coming up with estimates. This model makes so much sense! Thank you so much for the breakdown! Oh and P.S. saw Skillet several years back, they’re awesome!

    @@RefurbishedGentlemanTelevision How do you navigate repairs if going with a baseline price point? As I am beginning to transition to a baseline price point verses hourly rate, I'm thinking still charging hourly for labor in repair time + cost of product needed would be the way to go. Thoughts?

  • @RefurbishedGentlemanTelevision

    @RefurbishedGentlemanTelevision

    Grit & Grace Restoration I don’t do much as far as repairs honestly... so for me it’ll be a case by case basis based on why the repair is. If it’s something small I usually just take care of it. But I always let me clients know. Kind of a nice way to show your professionalism and give them a lil something extra which folks like. But if it’s a big repair, if you are willing to do it, definitely add it to the cost

    Awesome video. Best one I've seen about pricing. How do you handle repairs? It's one thing to replace the guide on the back of the drawer, but what about a piece that needs several repairs, including some relatively big ones like replacing part of the frame, side of a drawer, etc.?

  • @RefurbishedGentlemanTelevision

    @RefurbishedGentlemanTelevision

    That would be things you’d catch upon drop off or initial conversations and negotiate that cost to the client. As a rule of thumb for me, I did NOT do major repairs and let me custom client folks know that before the piece ever made it to me. If for some reason it got to my shop and did need something beyond what was negotiated I’d inform them that it cost more based on that fact … or they could take it back. Never was a problem and they were happy to have it repaired and painted 👍👍👍

    Thank you for the valuable information. After watching this video I’m pretty sure I’ve been underpricing myself. I really like your model and I’m going to try to start implementing it for myself. I have to ask you though, if you are doing more than distressing or glazing, like filling holes and adding new hardware or adding legs to the furniture, how do you price those add ons? I think it would be really easy to lose money as these customizations take a lot of my time and can be very expensive.

  • @RefurbishedGentlemanTelevision

    @RefurbishedGentlemanTelevision

    3 жыл бұрын

    Those things you’d know at the beginning, so set a baseline knowing you’ll be adding legs or filling holes, so adding that extra cost for the extra work to your baseline. Then from there, do the add-Ons as you need to. For me things like that are rare and not the norm, so you’d simply need to decided how you add in the cost for yourself to ensure you get what the time and products are worth to you 👍

    This was very informative, so thank you! I'm just starting out, and I find that one thing lacking is a "one-stop" resource for things such as a pricing template, a contract, or other needed documents like that which are specific to this business. Is there such a thing? And I'd also like to know how you handle it when a customer books a job, pays their 50% deposit, then wants to make changes? Do you write up a new contract and charge extra deposit, if necessary? And do you put a time frame in your contracts? Sorry for all the questions!

  • @RefurbishedGentlemanTelevision

    @RefurbishedGentlemanTelevision

    4 жыл бұрын

    Laura P. Yes, if they want a change a new contract is written, but if the cost added is minimal I don’t normally make them pay more for a deposit. It’s likely any change won’t add enough to make that worth asking for and would only be like penny pinching. Now they’d have to agree to and pay for the added change at the end tho.

  • @RefurbishedGentlemanTelevision

    @RefurbishedGentlemanTelevision

    Laura P. And yes, I absolutely have a timeframe, when they are to drop off the piece and when they are to pickup the piece. 3 weeks is my normal turnaround time. And I also write in that the pickup date is subject to change based on anything that might happen from my work to my personal life. So about 3-4 days before the scheduled pick up day I contact them to solidify things, all of which I explain at drop off And no, there’s not w one stop shop for all this anymore, there used to be... but it’s closed. But hopefully folks like me whore willing to share can help ya

    thanks for the video Mark. Question, why bother doing custom work at this pricing model if the profit margins are so much better for your own items? This is something I struggle with. Is it really worth it? Also, I know when you first started out you didn't always use primer and now you almost always do, so did you increase your prices to take that into consideration? That's not something the customer really understands as an upsell but I think it is definitely an issue that doesn't seem to ever be addressed. So much of the competition does not do proper prep and is making a better profit margin if you are pricing similarly to the market around you. How do you sell that to a customer?

  • @RefurbishedGentlemanTelevision

    @RefurbishedGentlemanTelevision

    4 жыл бұрын

    julesxxxooo so the easy answer is Custom Work is guaranteed money. It you paint something to sell there a lot of work involved to sell it and there’s no guarantee it will. So that’s the main reason why having a stable line of income that you can rely on being there is a good reason for doing custom work. As for primer, I now consider that normal prep. So I increased my baseline once I did that. And I do explain my process to folks and do explain that I use primer and the benefits of. So if you’re like me with this, then simply increase your baseline and be sure to tell your clients what you do and why. So you really don’t need to sell it to your client, just make it the normal procedure as I’ve done 👍👍👍

  • @RefurbishedGentlemanTelevision

    @RefurbishedGentlemanTelevision

    No sorry, repairs are hard to set a baseline. As they can run a much larger arena of thing then painting. I’d keep them separate. So charge X amount for painting/refinishing. Then repair cost will be Y. And on the Invoice itemize them out so the client knows exactly what their paying for what. But you could create baselines for repairs if you do them often. I don’t so I didn’t have that, more of a case by case thing for me. In the end, get what the time spent/skill is worth to you 👍

    Super helpful video. Thank you. Curious - where did you live in the south and where do you live now in the midwest? Did your prices go up or down when you moved? I'm in TN and I'm not sure that the market would accept those prices.

    Stephanie Jo Rountree I was in Florida, and moved to southern IL. And I needed to lower my pricing in IL as compared to FL. It’s definitely regional based on you current market, so I’d certainly do some research into your area and see what’s selling and for how much.

    I have a nightstand that I painted and added a transfer. I feel that I'm cheating myself for charging too low. How long should I leave furniture up for sale before changing the color and trying again?

  • @RefurbishedGentlemanTelevision

    @RefurbishedGentlemanTelevision

    4 жыл бұрын

    Cynthia Bosque this is a tricky thing... how long to leave it for sale if it’s not selling? If you want to keep it as-is, and it hasn’t sold after a few weeks, my trick was to take it down and repost it at another time. Maybe redo the staging so it’s like a brand new piece. The worst thing you can do is lower the price beneath what you deserve for the work, just to sell it. This will only lower the market value in your area, make it so folks expect to pay less with you, and you’ll hate doing this after a while if you’re only breaking even. So set the price, stick to it, and try my truck if it sits unsold for too long 👍

    John S absolutely! Strictly from a business perspective I mostly try to find the pieces with the greatest profit margin. But artistically I will however buy smalls to do things I might not be able to or want to do on the larger pieces. At the end of the day, this is my job, so finding the pieces that give me the greatest return is always my main priority 👍
