    do you find you’re inclined to listen to music that indulges your current emotional/mental state or do you prefer to contradict it? after a long, shitty day, would you throw on something grinding and broken, or would you want to hear something brighter and encouraging?

    I have a few questions. No particular order. 1. If you could punch anyone in the face, as hard as possible, who would it be? 2. Do you think it’s possible to breed a bull mastiff with a chihuahua? The chihuahua is the male. 3. Universe. Infinite or finite? 4. What is your least favorite vegetable? Nicolas Cage doesn’t count. Additional question: Wth do bears eat, anyway??

    Whats the most an album has grown on you, and most an album has grown off? How often do you feel that you cant find the words the pinpoint describe a particular feeling in music? And do you think that paintings are more effective in capturing that than writing? Thinking back to your hot take segment in your 1k sub q&a, do you still agree with all of those? :p Congrats on 6k subs, Ive been watching for a couple years and your work means a lot.

    I would be interested to hear your thoughts on what makes for good noise or really just good harsh extreme music in general, as it's an area that, while you don't cover it *super* often, you seem more comfortable in and with than a lot of other folks in music review spaces outside of the very tiny handful who specialise in it. Also, unrelatedly! What has most informed your prose style as a critic? For as much as the term "video essay" is bandied about to mean a lot of different things, your work feels very distinctly literary in its tenor. Not pretentious or overwrought, just carefully worded and very richly descriptive in a way more typical of prose work. This isn't a jab at other people on the platform, simply an observation. I do rather like it, though. :3

    Are you actively looking to bring diversity into your music rotations by listening (more) to particular artists? I.e. do you seek to listen to artists that have a particular identity, implicit or explicit, either in race, land of origin, sexuality, gender etcetera?

    That would be racist and sexist, giving special consideration due to those things.

  • @norbicsek

    @norbicsek

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@antikytheramechanism7909 It's not "giving special consideration", it's taking the effort to override the uneven representation perpetrated by the media and music communities. It's obvious that every genre has its own "face" attached to it, and while you can say that "I'll just consume as much [genre_name] as I possibly can, and I'll eventually stumble upon people from different countries, different ethnicities, different genders, etc. who make that kind of music anyways, no need to actively look for diversity", your knowledge of musicians will most likely be oversaturated with a certain demographic, because you can really only go off of what other people recommend, and/or what you see in the media... And it'd be dishonest to say that those people just happen to be better at that genre, or it was purely random chance, and there were absolutely no non-musical social biases involved. By the way, I know some people have this part of their brain that just instantly goes "waah waahh, ess jay doubleuse, waaahh, pee cee culture!!!" when they hear/read suggestions like this, if you're one of them, please try shutting that part of your brain off for a bit, because this thing still applies, even if we set aside certain specific groups of people whose sole identities are unfortunately considered "political". So, for example, one of my favorite rap groups happen to be an Italian experimental/alternative hip-hop duo called Uochi Toki. Now, I'm not Italian, I don't have any strong feelings about Italy, I don't speak the language, I don't know anything about their current social/political climate, and the only Italian person I've ever known IRL was an ex-girlfriend of a friend of mine, so it's needless to say that I generally just don't give shit about things being Italian or not. However, I'm certain that if these guys were American, they'd be right up there with Death Grips, Clipping, and all these other rappers/rap groups who are on the weirder side of things, and that the reason they're not well known has nothing to do with their music, it's purely because they're non-English-speaking Europeans, which is a demographic that's underrepresented in the genre, so when I see a discussion about experimental hip-hop, I'm actually going out of my way to pitch their music twice as often/hard as I normally would ("forcing" diversity, as some would say), because I believe that these guys are being unfairly dismissed for non-musical reasons by people who would otherwise dig their stuff. I hope I made my case that googling "Italian rappers" does not make you unfairly pro-Italian, it just provides you a shortcut towards some potentially great music that you'd most like be missing out on, if you based your exploration of rap music on the US-centric consensus that this genre has. And I also hope, that if I managed to drive this point across, then it's now also obvious that searching "trans avantgarde black metal artists" is not much different from this. Speaking of trans avantgarde black metal artists, check out Victory Over The Sun, she's fucking great.

    @@antikytheramechanism7909 Obviously seeing colour etc. isn't an end goal but because of certain biases (conscious or not) sometimes it can be useful to see colour etc.. For example a few years ago I realised that most of the artists I listened to were men, probably because of some implicit bias I had not considered, and now after going slightly out my way to listen to more women I have found a lot more amazing artists, even if it was *technically* sexist

    As someone who listens to a fairly wide array of styles of music, have ever wondered whether there's one unifying aspect in all/most of your favorites? Like, is there some specific, yet genre-independent thing that you seem to be consistently gravitating towards? What's the most intrinsically confusing album experience you've ever had? Like, an album that you can't really consider neither good, nor bad, you just genuinely don't get what the artist was thinking. Bonus points if it's from an artist you otherwise like/respect, those are always the most baffling ones. On a similar note: What's an album/artist, which, described on paper, sounds like something that you'd love, but for some reason, it just doesn't click for you?
