I don't understand how people cleared CAT from 2003-2008 with so difficult papers and no online information as such.

It was a level playing field back then as well. Plus the craze of going for an MBA had just started. So the margins weren’t as thin as they are now. These days there’s the opposite problem of having too much content, which might also be distracting and completely conflicting at times. Have to be careful about that as well!

Also sir, during my last mock I scored 14 in VARC, 7 in LRDI and -1 in quant. Quant which I thought is my strongest subject, I am unable to score good marks in it. Please let me know what I should do in this regard. My confidence is going down day by day. First of all not being able to score good marks in VARC and now getting negative marks in quant makes me think that maybe I won't be able to get into any IIM even after preparing from Jan as I am a general female engineer candidate

Unless the test was extremely difficult, you should have been able to spot 5 doable questions and solve them in 40 mins. Keep your goal a bit lower to start with and target the easiest few questions only. Get into the 40s consistently with scores of more than 10 in each section and take it from there instead of putting unnecessary pressure on yourself to get that 99 percentile. Your profile is far better than your mock score so I see a lot of scope to improve even by doing the little things right. Just wanted to know how have your mock performances been otherwise.

@@Point99_CAT_MBA other than this if the mocks are easy I get around 53 to 56 ( percentile comes around 78-82) marks in total. But if the mocks are tough then my marks have dropped down till 20-24 ( percentile come around 44) also. That is why I'm very confused if I'm performing up to the mark or not. I'm taking SIMCAT

Hi Shruti, There’s no guaranteed minimum percentile that exists. But with your academic profile and calibre, I would target at least a 99 percentile to be somewhat safe.

@@Point99_CAT_MBA sure sir, I am also looking for the same but as my marks in mocks were not up to the mark that is why I asked regarding the minimum percentile which I should tentatively get to get calls from LIK atleast

Hi sir, I joined IMS Hyderabad in Jan. I have been practicing VARC since Jan but still I only am able to score 14-16 marks in my mocks. Can you please guide me on how to improve attempting RC and how to work towards attempting atleast 2 RCs along with all the VR questions

I am struggling with VARC a lot and at the end of each mock it makes me think that I won't be able to cross the sectional cut off

Again, be super defensive to start with and attempt only those questions you are absolutely certain of. It’s okay to solve one RC and a couple of VA questions in 40 minutes till you develop confidence in your abilities. Post that the journey should be easy. 3 consecutive mocks with 15 marks in VARC should give you that confidence.

@@Point99_CAT_MBA sure sir, will start will start following this strategy and then will increase the number of RCs with time.

Hello sir, I have a question. In CAT 23, because of technical glitch in VARC section, I had a discontinued attempt which made me panic and lose my focus resulting in not clearing my VARC cutoff and less percentile of 93. How can I work on such extreme cases too? Like come kind of calmness training? PS: - Obviously I know some is luck but still don't want to get anxious in these situations, if they arrive. P.P.S: I am GEM with profile 9/8/8, 2+ workex and have got 99+ in CAT 22, so fairly confident I can achieve higher percentile again and I am working hard for it too.

The best way to handle this is to visualise all possible things that can go wrong and prepare your reactions accordingly. You have to tell yourself that you don’t need 40 minutes to solve a section at your level and that you can easily afford to lose even 5-10 minutes during the test. If you don’t trust yourself to do this, try simulating it in a mock. Start the section only after 10 minutes have passed and see how big a difference it makes to your score. I’m sure it shouldn’t change by much. Even for other scenarios, try to simulate them in mocks and build your reactions to all possible kinds of adversity. Once you are convinced that these things don’t matter a lot, your reaction should become a lot less intense. I’ll also try to make a detailed video on this at some point in time as I am sure a lot many people would be facing this. Thanks for the insight 👍🏽
