I’d watch that, but I’d be disappointed if multiple episodes focused on methods and tooling so I want a title that locks them more in to the “organizing your maker space” episodes.

the archiving organization is something I picked up from my dad. He has hundreds of tools he has collected over decades of being a mechanic, building his own home, doing all the plumbing and electric himself. The one thing he has never failed to do was save every single manual from every tool he owns, and keeps them well preserved in a filing cabinet. His reasoning, " Someday I will be gone, and my children are going to have all of these tools, they are going to need to know how they work, how to repair them, and how to use them." and that is one of the most inspiring things I have ever heard him say. To this day, no matter how trivial a device, I too save every single manual, from every single gadget, and I keep them safe and sound for anyone who comes after me.

Yes! I used to have a bunch of things from my childhood that were super sentimental but still brought back good memories. When I needed to purge some stuff, I just started taking photos of some things then added them to an album. Means just as much to me & takes up so much less stuff, and allowed me to hold onto the few items that I just can't part with.

Taking photos of your creations is undoubtedly a great way to keep a record of your makes. If you are making objects with volume, whether individual models, dioramas, tools or other objects, look into the ability to create 3D models from photographic sources. As the world of auto-stereoscopic 3D display continues to improve (consider the Looking Glass technology seen on the channel recently), having virtual 3D representations of your work will become ever more pleasing.

I think the original Doctor Octopus arms are really amazing puppets, especially because you had coordinate 4 puppeteers AND Alfred Molina (or his stunt double(s)) to make it work. I know switching them to CGI for “No Way Home” made it easier but I’m in JJ Abrams/Christopher Nolan camp, if you can do it for real, do it for real, save CGI for things that can’t be done for real, or would just destroy the budget if you did it real (cue Nolan driving a real airplane into a building!)

Great point I always give for shelving which gets a huge amount of crap off the floor. I often see shelving thrown out on the side of the road but there comes a time when you can't take it with you. I have a whole shed full of tools that I am too old to use now. I should just sell it all and buy precious metals with the proceeds.

I recently fell into a leathercraft-shaped rabbit hole. All of my tools are second hand (my round knife is from 1861, Georgia). I purposely sought them out because a) quality and b) the patina shows you how to hold the tool properly. Sell them on eBay or some similar site. Use the proceeds to go on a holiday - use the tools to build some memories. - Cathy (&, accidently, Steve), Ottawa/Bytown/Pimisi

It would be really interesting to see the growth and span of where you started and where you have reached. We are talking about a period of under 40 years and I am sure that every project wouldn’t be covered but I feel that it would be so incredible to see the journey. Thank you for sharing.

Hi Adam, I found modern, currently in production, Triangular Ergonomic Handled Screw Drivers like you mentioned in a previous "Ask Adam Savage" episode. Tekton makes Triangular Screw Drivers of many head types for their Extra Torq line of screw drivers. Their normal line of Screw Drivers uses Square Automotive Mechanics like handles. And the Screw Drivers are completely made in the USA & are of reasonable prices. For their other tools, if they aren't made in the USA, they'll mention on their website which part is made from where. No more mysterious "Assembled from Global Materials" BS. They're honest about where they source their parts.

You should also consider using the museum practice of using white-out and writing a unique number (say, year made-order made-Real or Replica-etc) in a spot that most people will never see if the object is on display, and then use that coded number as the database entry point.

I'd love if you had a show for trying to help people touch up and give tips for their maker/storage space. I moved into a 2 bedroom apartment a few months back, and decided to turn one of those rooms into a maker-space, but it's not a very large room and, given I'm living in an apartment, I also have to be careful to not cause any major damage to the walls or carpet, so most automatic tools are basically a no-go. It's currently got most of my extra stuff from moving taking up space as well (slowly but surely putting it all away and freeing up that space), but I hope to be able to get a decent maker-space for myself set up in there someday.

I really enjoy 3d printing and painting miniatures with my sla 3d printer. I've been doing it for quite some time. I live in a very small apartment so I have a single shelf where I store them. I still add things to the shelf from time to time but it's very crowded mostly these days I have someone in mind that I'm going to give it to. I take a bunch of pictures and then it goes away. For these the pictures are almost as good.

I know others will cringe at this but I make props and costumes for characters in my paintings. Of course for me the goal is the finished painting. I do keep my artifacts but often I will cannibalize them later or repurpose them. You have to decide what is precious to you and what is not. As a professional I encounter things I’ve made for a specific purpose and want them around but this is pretty rare. If you are making things for yourself to enjoy then display them in your home. If you are making things for a larger purpose then that is their legacy. If you are making things to be noticed then get them out into the public and make some money while you’re at it.

Yup- the show almost writtes itself- start with 5-10 min introducing the maker and showcasing some of their work, go look at their storage nightmare, come up with and work on a fix- work together as 2 makers on something, with either the maker showing adam some new skills or the other way around. I feel the show would be a bit niche to run for like 10years or anything but it seems like the sort of show you'd get good figures for 3-4 seasons.

It's a film that's meant to make you feel uncomfortable and disturb you more than a little. So be prepared.

Eraserhead baby: I just watched it and think I figured it out. (spoilers? below) The puppeteer is under the pillow of course, but The Key is the material it’s made from. I’ve seen that exact material as a kid though I can’t place it. Something like the old-school “slime” you could get in the turn-key vending machines, or maybe it’s just gelatin. The neck is empty with neck movements transferred from the head and I suspect that the jaw/tongue have complicated hinges like those beautiful multi-articulating bird masks. If I’m right, it would have been *extremely* fragile and felt exceptionally organic. It also dries very quickly which is further proof to me: the texture is slightly drier and thinner for some of the shots.
