I work in the TV/Commercial industry based out of North Texas and have had the privilege of working with a good amount of movie stars/celebrities both new and old. But I would say I’ve never really been star struck, that’s until I did a small project in Oklahoma and I found out that Grant Imahara was going to be the host of the short doc we were filming. I freaked out. I did work up enough courage to shake his hand and tell him how much Mythbusters meant to me growing up. He was the best! I’ll never forget that day on set.

I took on the odds that I wouldn’t make adam mad if I got this tattoo, and the odds I would ever meet him. And I got the tattoo. I colored mine way different but the ruler is exactly the same. And I can confirm it’s very useful. Even in odd situations. I’m a cook and front counter guy at a burger place right now and MANY people ask me “How big fish for fish and chips?” I just hold my arm up “Each cut is about 4-5 inches.” Always a great interaction. I would of never thought having a ruler tattoo would help me sell fish and chicken strips…

@@chaoticneutral6288 i absolutely agree and I definitely do the same thing. But I “copied” Adams because im a fan. It means more to me than just a ruler or a tattoo to be used as a tool. I grew up watching mythbusters and it’s a big part of who I am today so. It’s also a very meaningful tattoo. Also to your point, that’s why I colored mine very differently. Gave it my own spin. The colors reference part of who I am.

I got my dad an I-Pad this year. He is 79, and suffered his second stroke 3 years ago. We put a ton of his music on it, and he plays it and sings along with it. His voice is still weak from the stroke, but my mom is in awe about how it has changed things. His voice is getting a bit stronger. We should have gotten it before, I just didn't see it as a therapy, and was also thinking he wouldn't be able to understand the tech. Thank God for my "Thing 1", James, who researched and set it up for him. So YES, Adam, you can buy the perfect gift if you put the thought into it. My mom says it's the best thing he's ever gotten. Her heart is full.

The fact that Adam didn't personally create the artwork used for his tattoo is one of the first truly surprising (as opposed to interesting) things I have learned about him... I would have expected that he'd have gone to various artists with a request of "I want *this* tattooed..." and maybe iterated a bit with feedback, such as "You can't have millimeter graduations, that's too small...".

The one tradition we have every year without fail is going out for brunch on Christmas Eve, and eating way too much. The worst part is that we are Newfoundlanders... so brunch isn't a simple 2 or 3 items on a plate. I'm talking Ham, Bacon, Bologna, Sausage, Eggs, Toast, Toutons (Fried Bread Dough), Homemade Hash Browns, and a couple coffees. Mind you, that's usually around 1 pm, and we don't eat again until 7, where its a light dinner.

It's a delightful piece to add to the topic too, and it makes me fan girl even more about him! On the topic of the tattoo - I have my own version of the ruler, but it's more subtle. Still on my left forearm, but it's based upon the fifth element rune tattoo, but all in a line. The dots are all specific distances apart, and each rune is 25mm square. Adding the last piece of fun, it's rainbow too :) I got it about two weeks BEFORE he mentioned his one regret on his tattoo 🤣

First Valentines Day with my now wife, we went to Candle 79 in the city. Tall older guy was there with a lady and I was thinking, “Is that James Cromwell?” (Trekkers out there, “It’s Zefram Cochrane!”) I don’t like bothering famous people though, so I just did my best to enjoy our date. Ended up running into him later outside the restroom, he is definitely a very tall guy. Years later at a book release party for a British friend of my wife, it turns out her husband was friends with a rather famous musician growing up, and sure enough Sting showed up! Now I worked in college radio and I met some of my favorite indie musicians, but never someone at the level of Sting (I think the only higher level is if it was Paul or Ringo from the Beatles).

I did the same thing with Chas Chandler on a boat trip, I could not approach him. I went to the toilet and ten minutes later Mr Chandler came over to our table and sat down for a chat. I was gobsmacked! we chatted for half an hour!, about Jimmi Hendrix and Chas's sons band who were performing on the boat. Chas autographed a paper plate for me, shook my hand and went back to his table. It was about five years later when I found out that my wife had approached Chas and told him I was too nervous to approach him. What a gentleman, RIP Chas, God bless you.

For me it was meeting Steve Blum at DragonCon some years ago. His voice has been a constant in my life since I was young. I got a little emotional as we chatted for a minute lol. I later attended a panel he was giving about voice acting and being involved with massive media projects, and he remembered me by name when I went up to the mic at the end to ask a question. Probably doesn't remember it now, but it blew my mind at the time. Really nice guy.

So, for future Turkey attempts- one prep, two cooking options, and one post-cook. Prep- Dry Brine the bird for a couple of days in the fridge. For cooking- if a whole turkey, spatchcock it- this will cook white and dark meat more evenly, and will cook faster. 2nd option- try smoking bone-in Turkey breasts. Last, post cook advice- once birds are done, don't just slice slabs off the turkey- cut out the whole breast, and cut the other way, across the grain. Good luck;-)

Over the last 15 years I've met and interviewed a lot of actors from TV shows I've covered via podcasting, and I don't think I've ever been star struck. But in 2016 I attended at concert for the music from LOST conducted by Michael Giacchino at the Ford Amphitheater in LA. During a break, I went to the concession stand to get a warm drink (it was VERY windy and chilly that night). A moment later walked in a guy that looked eerily similar to Adam Savage! I didn't want to stare, but I had to look closer to see if it was him! OMG! He's wearing a jacket with NASA patches! Oh no! He looked at me! He caught me staring! I was then too embarrassed and nervous to say anything. I've regretted it ever since. That was my one chance to at least tell him how much I love his work, and I got so star struck that I blew it!

Hey Adam, brine your turkey. Get yourself a large bucket (I use one of my 7 gallon buckets that I have for home brewing), put about a gallon of hot water (doesn't need to be boiling, just hot enough to help dissolve stuff in it), stir in salt, whole pepper corns, and other seasonings depending on the style I'm making (Cajun style works well), fill the rest with ice and cold water, then put the turkey in it and cover it with the lid overnight. Then cook it in your preferred method the next day. I've done it cooked, smoked, and deep fried and it's always comes out juicy and delicious.

I had no idea what to say or do, then my manager walked right up to you and introduced himself and we were big fans, and I just kind of dumbly introduced my self after him. I didn’t want to gawk or whatever, there was just a sort of short circuit of surprise. There’s almost like a disconnect in seeing someone on video for so long then seeing them in person. My manager and I had seen you and Jamie live at the Castro Theater which was so amazing. You did a demonstration of tin type photography.

I used to work at an office near the Google offices in Pittsburgh. While I worked there I would take long walks around the neighborhood. One day I was heading back to work, I had been gone 75 minutes, but I was tired so I was going to stop at a coffee shop and get a latte. The coffee shop I went to was small and only had one door in and out that was unlocked. I noticed that there were a group of people inside the store blocking the door so I waited outside. Eventually they came outside, but stood right in front of the door. The direct thing to do would be to excuse myself and try to push through the group of 4-5 people, but I waited for them to move. After a minute or two, I couldn't help but wonder why Harrison Ford was stopping me from getting my latte. He may have thought I was there for an autograph, but he would have been wrong. Thanks Harrison!

The first time I really noted a measurement tattoo was on the Crime Pays But Botany Doesn't channel. He's got one on a finger and I thought that was genius. I went and measured my fingers and across my palm and memorized the measurements so I can quickly get a rough idea of size. Having a ruler on one's arm is convenient as well. I think I'd put one on my leg because the stuff I have to measure usually needs two hands, or to be laid flat, to measure easily.

Our Christmas tradition is to not have our family gathering on Christmas day. As we (myself and my sisters) got older, everyone ended up having more than one place to go on holidays. We all decided as a family that we'd get together on whatever weekend day was most convenient because the most important part of a holiday is spending time together, not the day itself. We all disperse to our various in-laws on the holiday itself, and we have ours as a family on another day. People put too much importance on the day itself and lose sight of the fact that spending time together is more precious than any singular holiday. As my father has passed on some 25 years ago, and my mother is getting higher in her years, those times spent together mean more every year.

And as it happens I am a huge Harrison Ford fan also, but I did not actually meet him. I was walking down a street here in Vancouver, rainy day (of course). And a couple walking towards me looked vaguely familiar at a distance... but it didn't click. I looked up when the passed me and it was Calista and Harrison, she smiled and nodded so did I, and didn't quite get a look from Harrison. But after taking another fifty steps I realzied who they were. I turned back and Harrison was looking back (nobody else on the street) and looked at me and gave me his wry grin and slight nod as I had not bothered them for interaction. I was thrilled and tipped my brim of my baseball cap (Yankees) and he actually smiled. I walked off on a cloud. I had thoughts of go get an autograph, go say hello. Too much of my film professionalism (let the actors be no selfies or autographs on set, etc.) got in the way and left them alone. It is one of my favorite celebrity interactions, all without words. And I have worked with many, and many I can call a friendly face who always remember my name and are happy to see me again. (Robin Williams being the truest fun) I will treasure that moment from Harrison, his smile more than any autograph or piece of memorabilia made me so thrilled and starstruck. He knew. Cheers Adam I hope to meet you one day! Maybe on a rainy street here in Vancouver?

My family has dropped turkey too. It can be good, but we grew up with mom being frugal to an extreme. She would get an enormous turkey for Thanksgiving when she found the best sales, then we had leftovers for a month... And then immediately got another one for Christmas. So 2 solid months of turkey left all of us sick of it.

One time Mythbuster guest Alton Brown has a pretty good turkey recipe. Requires an overnight brine. Hasn’t let me down yet.

Was watching another KZreadr, Taryl Fixes All, he had a neon sign maker on and this sign maker had a neon Adam and Jamie over his workbench. Amazing. Adam, it was quite stunning how good it was of you both for being neon.

Yeah, artists certainly deserve to be paid for their work. And credit for what they’ve contributed. And to not be forced into working for companies or have their work stolen.

It never occurred to me to put measurements on my arm but my dyslexic brain wouldn’t mind L, R and a wee reminder of which spot E,I, and R go in Ohm’s law. Maybe I’ll incorporate those into my family crest and have it tattooed on my arm.

This sparks joy. You're being unimaginative in how you cook turkey. I want an Adam Savage shop class channel. The first episode could be that guy from the Misfits.

The Peter Jackson thing I find funny because yeah, LOTR is epic, but my first introduction to his work was "Meet the Feebles", so..... yeah. Maybe not so intimidating.

I paid extra to have my tattoo design kept out of his books (he charged a fee if he couldnt use your art later) A few years later I saw my tattoo in his books. Idk if anyone ever got it, but yeah - that was very personal to me

Know your body measurements. Spread your fingers out in a relaxed manner, and measure, Tense them and measure again. How wide is your hand at the knuckles? Finder widths? What's your cubit measurement?

It's rare that I'm star struck. Fame doesn't automatically earn respect. But, I remember sobbing - absolutely ugly crying SOBBING - the first time I was in a room with OMD. 100% lost my mind, completely overwhelmed by love and meaningfulness and the power of the encounter because of how important they are to me. I doubt I'll ever get to meet Adam Savage. But if I do, I hope I can manage to get the words out to tell him thank you for his book. It has been very important to me as a maker.

Adam, Your tattoo has always reminded me of Plastigage. It is definitely a very useful design for now. In another 30 years, it will likely be too stretched out to be reasonably accurate. Until then, it is a great idea.
