Ask Adam Savage: Does Self-Filming Make Builds Longer?

Ғылым және технология

In this live stream excerpt, Tested members Best Tank, Jack Walsh, Ryan Peck and Vickie Bligh ask about working with cardboard, whether self-filming makes a build take more time, and the fate of the individual cases that housed the items now displayed in the sci-fi blaster storage vault. Real question. Why dont you just buy/utilize a seperate site for display of things as a small "prop etc. museum" where you can cache your stuff and charge public a reasonable fee to see cool stuff? Plus sell tested merch and whatnot in the little shop. Cause everything needs a little shop.

Especially when you have as much stuff as Adam has. Stuff that is unique enough that it'd be really easy to overlook or underestimate the value of unless you know EXACTLY what you're looking at. That estate would be a HANDFUL.

I thought it was interesting that he mentioned that. When I am stuck trying to figure something out in the shop and things have gotten completely out of control, I have this habit of thinking about what someone might wonder was going on if I died right at this moment based on the chaos of things in the shop. It usually gives me a good laugh before I can reset my brain and get back to work.

When i film my builds, it may take slightly longer setting camera up, but then when camera is rolling I work quicker & more focused. Framing the shot helps 'frame' that specific task in my mind. The *biggest* time sink though is watching the footage repeatedly afterwards!

i figured there would be a factor of reduced speed that is applied when he is filming non-time-lapsed since he has his music off, but maybe the percent difference is small enough to basically not matter

As someone currently dealing with the loss of a family member who was also a high functioning hoarder with a cluttered workshop, I appreciate you talking about confronting that. I am in the same boat and while I'm young and otherwise healthy I am still sadly aware of how quickly that can change and how hard it is to process grief while also managing a mismanaged estate. I would love to leave my next of kin with a thorough catalog of my belongings and what I wish to be done with them. As morbid as it may sound to others I think it is a great goal to work towards.

Not only is cardboard great for planning out builds I like to turn cardboard into paper mache-like for projects. Many small strips are placed over a form while wet. Once dried it is easily sandable. You can even make parts in segments and secure them later to make complex shapes. The mask I made in class is hard enough to survive a decent hammer blow. Which was a requirement to remove the clay form from under the mix and strips.

  • @RoseKindred

    @RoseKindred

    2 жыл бұрын

I have my mask on the wall, it was beaten with a hammer and sprayed with a powered sink hose to get the clay out. -Create a rude form of what you want out of water-based sculpting clay onto a piece of MDF wood. -Rip cardboard, paper, junk mail, anything you want to use to roughly 1 in. Mix your paper mache mix, I use 2 different mixes, water with flour, Water with flour and light glue. Essential oil drops may be added to fight mold and the smell that happens with the mix interacting with the clay. Mint is a good one. -Soak a few strips in W/F mix and apply each strip in overlapping figures onto the form. Extend the strips onto the wood, past the clay. The first few layers spread father out. This can give you a lip to build off of when connecting extra parts or just to help pressure the down the paper mix that is higher on the clay. -To store overnight, cover one final layer with dry/rough paper strips, slide the project into an open-ended bag. Resume with a soaked sheet back onto the top. -When you feel about midway into the project start using the second mixture with the white glue also added to saturate the strips remembering to really push them down onto the previous layers and keep crossing new and old. You can alienate between the two mixes after a few coverings. -Once you are almost done switch to the glue mixture and use that for the final few layers. Let this dry at least 2 days. -Pry the mask off and flip it over. The clay inside may be hard to leather hard now. If you can wait another day to expose it, do so. -Otherwise, go to a trashcan and hit the mask with a hammer along the paper-covered part to shatter the constraining clay inside. -Once all the clay is out, if there is clay still in a precision spray hose can blast out the clay but sometimes just more waiting and chipping with a screwdriver works well. -You can now work on the underside of the mask. Fill it with more paper mixture and strips, add drywall compound, or poor in resin. Paint and coat if you like.

If you slightly dampen one side of cardboard you can peel it off and put that side on the inside of the curve. It makes it so it curves much nicer and easier. Carboard with a picture or plasticy side will be a smoother outside surface.

I know its not a nice topic to touch on Adam but i always wondered as i do with all the stuff we all collect blindly as we look toward the future , what happens when our candle is blown out . Its the ones who care that now have the burden you have left them so make it as easy as you can . And with your collection Adam we are looking at quite a legacy that books will be written about and parts of the collection auctioned off at amazing prices or more preferably on a museum floor dedicated to the Savage collection ..

this will never get seen but, if anyone would have a push button spy armory like Mr. and Mrs. Smith, it would be Adam Savage. Could you imagine walking into his shop, seeing all his tools and his building areas, he hits a button and his whole workshop transforms into the armory of all his builds? With how custom his shop is, his ability, and the dead spaces he has, he is a prime candidate for this.

I’m at the stage where I’m trying not to be a hoarder. I would love to have the space to display everything I could acquire or could make, but when your only place is your living space, decisions have to be made. Every thing I think of that I could make and everything I see that I could acquire, or even the pretty things I see while shopping has a few questions I ask about it to myself: - Do I have a need for it? - Is it suitable for display? - Do I have a place to put it? - Do I have the funds for it? Usually the answer is no to most of these questions I ask myself, so I usually don’t make it or acquire it.

I would love to watch Adam revisit a ODB he wants to improve. Would be interesting to hear his thought process and how he came to the conclusions he did. I think this is similar to the replication problem in academia. Everyone is so focused on doing something new, there are fewer people trying to replicate experiments and as such a lot of things slip through the cracks. You never step in the same river twice. How does Adam now view this object vs the Adam that conceived of V1?

That’s your next shop-move, mate… find a space that will give you a gallery/showcase worthy of (and expandable for) your ever-growing collection of crafts, props and memorabilia! The second you began to lament “what to do with all this crap?” in the video I immediately thought you could build a “Museum of Everything Else” like Sam Battle/Look Mum No Computer did with vintage technology… except, of course, you’ll call it “Savage somethingorother” and fill it with all your props and accomplishments.

The KZread Mistakes, the continually in this video are driving me nuts lol, that bottle man, the paper, keep the time order correct ;-) now I know why he doesn't normally have food or drink in shots.

Oddly enough, although I like Adam and enjoy his "company", I've decided to unsub. My favorite people here stick a camera somewhere (several times) and go for it. They edit and upload. Try Diesel Creek. KZread has been GOOD to him and he has Patreon patrons. I'm certain it's been much better to you. My problem is you're running a business. You need so many people and justify it as "not an efficient use of your time" to do the mundane things. Also, Norm never let 10 words do the job when 1000 can be used. Boring despite some fascinating content. IF I were a theatre or some other media prop maker I'd find your channel useful. I design and build civil engineering infrastructure; roads and bridges that will outlast me by decades. I find your methods to be slapdash, too hurried (without cause) to be safe or even completed with minimal craftsmanship. KZread is too full to waste time just because I like your on camera character. I also went through 9 "Spot" videos to find the tenth was "for members only". That sir, is greed.
