ASICS Metaspeed Sky Paris

The Metaspeed Sky Paris gets a Peba upgrade, new upper material, and a literal revamp. It’s a softer shoe that’s also more comfortable for the toes, and it comes at a cost of aggressiveness. However, I think it's a tradeoff that most runner will be willing to make. It’s not a shoe I’d want to take for a fast 5k, but it’s certainly something I’d be excited to wear for my next marathon PB attempt.

I really didn't like the sky+ at all. Also sent the Endorphin Elite back. Big no's for me. 15 miles in both and shoes I never wanted to run in again, especially a marathon. I'll just skip these both since I can't figure which to buy. Sorry Asics...

I personally liked Edge Paris more after having an opportunity to jog briefly in both. The plate on this one is flat and the rocker is very late. Edge Paris had much more directional bounce thanks to more scooped plate and a better rocker feeling. I think Edge Paris is the real deal this time around.

Great review!! Always funny to see how people are just not talking about carbon plates anymore! I remember the talks about the plate geometry with the Edge+ and Speed+ and now we don't care at all about plates, it's interesting! One question, I tend to overpronate, and raced all of my half-marathons in the Edge+, that sometimes felt like it was not that forgiving, and that exhaustion could lead to a bad form and the shoe was not really helping! With the shape of the sole, it feels like overpronators should just run away as quick as possible from the metaspeed sky paris, would you say so? (looking for a good marathon shoe and my form might even get worse at the end of a marathon than with a half!)

  • @kofuzi

I found the Saucony Endorphin speed 3 to firm under the front foot when I wore them. Is this softer? I do mostly 10 K. Also are you a forefoot striker, midfoot striker or heel striker? Because that makes a big difference I think.

Yes. ASICS went out of their way in the first two iterations to call it specifically a nylon foam rather than a Peba foam, which they could have easily done. They’ve also gone out of their way this year to specify that it’s not Pebax. Bottom line, the foam is quite different. It’s more like what people think of when people think of peba.

@kofuzi when you say the midsole is cut back more - how would you compare the midsole width to the Vaporfly or AlphaFly 2? VF and AF2 are too narrow for me - my arches extended too far past the foam causing foot pain. I do not have this issue with Endorphin Elite and races my last 2 marathons in them. Thanks for your perspective! This would be the difference if I buy them or not!

Surprisingly I find the FF Turbo+ foam firmer than the FF Turbo in my initial runs in the Sky Paris. Maybe my foot just has a bias since I am a big fan of the FF Turbo foam. Maybe the foam will soften up a little in my next runs in the Sky Paris. :)

Im confused by the difference between the Edge and the Sky. When I pick up the pace, I lengthen my stride and increase my cadence. Not by a hugely significant amount in either case, but I thought most runners increased stride and cadence as they increase pace.

I think what ASICS would say is that everyone increases stride length and cadence when they run faster. but stride runners increase their stride length more while their cadence increase is relatively smaller. and vice versa. I hope that clears things up.

@@kofuzi I think for a lot of us it's hard to know. I don't think my watch measures stride length and like most amateur runners I don't have a coach. My cadence does increase somewhat on my tempo runs, races and on hills. I typically run 175 -180 on my regular jogs, closer to 190 on spadework, 200 if I'm really going all out. I';m certainly not one of those people who run at 220-230 cadence. One caveat is that my cadence also increases in lighter weight shoes, and I tend to do my workout, long runs at race pace in lighter weight shoes. My new dailies are softer but lighter than my previous ones, and cadence average cadence trends closer to 180 now. I guess you're in a bit of a pickle if your side length and cadence increase equally when it comes to Asics. Out of curiosity, how do you think these shoes would work for wider fore/midfoot runners, with higher arches?

Thanks for the great video! How would you compare these shoes with the Endorphin pro 3 and 4? Do you think the Paris are good for a wide variety of runners like the endorphin pro?

I haven’t tried endorphin pro 4. But I think the Sky Paris is very different. Both Peba foams, but beaded Peba feels very different than non-beaded Peba. Beaded Peba has a distinctive bounce to it

Hey there ... Just wondering what size you went for in the ASICS Superblast and in this shoe ? I find the superblast has a pretty big roomy toebox ... Many shoes I go for a 10.5 but I went to a 10 for the superblast... Just wondering what your thoughts are on the Ms sky Paris are and if you went same size in your superblast ?

I like a narrow arch, but I don’t consider it any less stable than the prior version. Also, I recently interviewed ASICS pro Lisa Weightman who overpronates heavily on her right foot. She believes it’s more supporting in the arch than the prior version
