So. I'm Asian. Vietnamese American. Personally, I actually really like a lot of Trader Joe's Asian products and I feel like maybe these items weren't described well enough/cooked as well as they could've been. Firstly, Michelle was judging the JAPANESE fried rice as if it a Chinese one. Idk if they were told what they were eating, but it's a pretty important thing to do, in my opinion, if you're going to do a taste test and compare it to authentic products. There was edamame and nori in it, and for goodness sake, not all fried rice is the same. Vietnamese fried rice is different from Chinese fried rice. Japanese fried rice is as well. Every culture has its own variation. Secondly, homeboy needs to make his own opinion instead of waiting for her to answer and then just nodding and agreeing. At least, that what it looked like to me. Not trying to be rude, it just seemed like he was just echoing what she was saying and looking for a reaction from her first before responding. Thirdly, I've tried all the products they've had (and more). Best results are to wrap the baos in a damp paper towel and microwave to achieve the fluffy texture they were talking about. Fry the orange chicken a little hard to get some crunchy bits. Also, try the Chicken Soup Dumplings and Thai Tea Mochi. They're not half bad. Great price and very easy and quick to make. Not super authentic but will satisfy cravings.

Both of these points are evidenced by the back track on the bao. Relax... it ain't freshly made Asian food... it is frozen heat and serve food. The two girls are better.. more upbeat. The upbeat vibe made it easier for both of them to try the foods with an open palette and mind. FYI - Japanese fried rice often times comes with furikake which contains seaweed. Let's be real here, there's a good chance Trader Joes picked what they would eat, they were probably trying to promote their less popular options to even out sales more. Also even if it's not exactly correct a lot of the time people are speaking of Southeast Asia when they say "Asia" because a lot of people don't know the names of all of those smaller countries... Everyone knows the names of India and Russia so think of them on their own. We're not taking anything away from non SE-Asian Asians by specifying separately. We all still love you. As a Chinese-American who lives in a city without good Chinese dumplings but has had decent ones in their life - For frozen ones they really aren't bad. The meat lacks some flavor that you'd get in a good Chinese restaurant, but that's true of even the Asian frozen brands. As far as the wrapper, that is entirely a matter of taste. Chinese pot stickers have thicker skins, which I feel give a better meat/starch balance. So from that perspective it isn't good - but no Japanese gyoza are. The Japanese prefer a thinner won ton style skin. The other benefit of a thicker skin is that you can get good browning and a nice crust, giving flavor and a texture difference. But again, this is how most frozen brands are. So compared to authentic fresh ones, C or C-. Compared to frozen Asian brands, a solid B/B+.

There are fusion restaurants that do great because of the care and attention the chefs put into the food. Creativity and experimentation is part of cooking and is what drives the culinary world. That being said there are also bad authentic food solely because the chef wasn't good.
