    Can someone explain to me why the sword is so flimsy? Can it still do damage or is it kinda just for show?

  • @bluehippofilms

    @bluehippofilms

    4 жыл бұрын

    It’s best to think of this as a modern exhibition sport not actual combat (something like gymnastics or ice skating). The moves are based on traditional wushu (Chinese martial arts), but the purpose is perform exciting martial arts routines based on the spirit of wushu In that context, the swords are flexible for safety and practicality reason. That way nobody gets seriously hurt or arrested for while waving around real weapons. Swords can now become lighter ~ 1.3 lbs, allowing you do more complex and impressive movements without much danger. They also make a satisfactory snapping sound when proper power/technique is applied (which you wouldn’t get with more rigid swords). The swords can still hurt you if you're not careful, but you’re no longer going to get a life threatening injury from one. When something gets adapted into a sport, things change a lot, so this really isn’t that unusual. Think about other combat-derived sports like fencing or javelin throwing. In fencing the swords are even more flexible and barely look like swords anymore. Similarly, in javelin throwing, the spears don't look like spears anymore, and they're not even being thrown like you would in an actual battle. Again it’s all or sport/practical reasons.

    @gennaro gerrard: Oh yes, it will still hurt because the blade's moving so fast and with so much power. I actually have a few cuts/scars on my left arm from when I was first learning daoshu and I made some mistakes. If they were real swords, like everyone seems to want, I probably wouldn't have an arm anymore ;)

    Cause it's legit made out of fuckin foil or some thin ass metal so I just makes that sound from flapping in the wind I would assume. I have 3 of these types of swords but never thought of why they made the sound. Nice question:)

    By the way, is the blade very sharp?

  • @bluehippofilms

    @bluehippofilms

    2 жыл бұрын

    Not sharp, since this is martial arts forms adapted for sport (just like fencing swords aren't sharp). That's also why the sword is flexible, for sport and safety purposes. However, because you move very fast with a lot of power, it will still cut you. I have quite a few scars from when I was learning daoshu as evidence, many of which I probably should have gotten stitches for.

    This is secure but there is nothing more frustrating that a flaccid sword! I don't know about regulations but it wouldn't be more useful a real sword but without the Sword's Cutting Edge? I mean, sharpless both sides ( I assume it would be more accurate stability and weigh, and secure at the same time!)

    It’s best to think of this as a modern exhibition sport not actual combat (something like gymnastics or ice skating). The swords are flexible for safety and speed reasons. Also so they make a satisfactory snapping sound when proper power/technique is applied (which you wouldn’t get with more rigid swords). This really isn’t that unusual. Think about something like competitive fencing, where the swords are even more flexible and even less historically accurate. Again it’s for speed/safety/sport reasons.
