We spent two weeks touring South Korea and Japan, navigating gibberish environments and exploring colorful cultures. It was awesome to be immersed in such a foreign world-a world where English words were treasured, no matter how broken. Our favorite restaurants were ones who served English menus. When our non-verbal communication attempts failed (as they often did), we resorted to our phones’ handy translation apps.
We rode their subway system into the ground. We walked until our feet hurt. Then we walked some more. We ate dessert with every meal. It was fun tasting flavor combinations that we had never experienced before, even if some of them were too strange to enjoy. Surprisingly, all of the food was high-quality and served with pride. I will miss the rich traditions, crafted food and genuine hospitality.
