But baby Bob is going to have a really efficient Air Force heat pump heating his home. Currently, his electricity costs are 28 p per kilowatt. We are gonna work at Bob's cost over the next five to 10 years. Bob has just had his air source heat pump installed for a total cost of 7,000 pounds. His electricity rate is 28 p per kilowatt hour. Between October and November this year, he's used 101 kilowatts per hour, which accounts to 29 pounds over eight months. Bob has paid all, will pay 226 pounds between the colder winter months. He predicts a usage of 150 kilowatts as opposed to 101 kilowatts, which will cost him 42 pounds a month. That's an annual cost of 394 pounds.
Bob is looking at reducing his carbon footprint and against an ESOL heat pump option. He's thinking let's replace it with an electric boiler. Bob gets a quote by an accredited installer and he's been quoted 2000 pounds to replace his gas boiler with an electric boiler. Right? Bob isn't as concerned with the electric boiler or passionate about it because it's not as efficient as the ESL's heat pump. Its c o p is one to 1.5. It's not as efficient as the ESL's heat pump, but it's significantly less to put in. His current electricity Cost per kilowatt hour is 28 p. Working this out between October, November, he'll be using 200 free kilowatts per hour, which will cost him 56 pound a month. Over the eight months, it'll cost him 454 pounds and during the four winter months, we're predicting the 250 kilowatt per hour usage. That is a total amount of 734 pounds and 72 pence. Bob wants to do a direct comparison between the air source heat pump and the electric boiler. He wants to look at the running cost difference, the installation cost difference, and the maintenance cost difference, right? The difference between a six kilowatt electric boiler and ESOL heat pump, six kilowatt in installation is 5,000 pounds.
Let's look at the additional electricity which an electric boiler will cost you versus the S or heat pump. If we look at the difference over the year, we can see that the electric boiler will cost Bob 750 pounds and the S or heat pump will cost Bob 450 pounds over five years with electricity at the same rate, which we all know it won't be. Bob will be saving 1500 pounds installing an air source heat pump. If that figure is to increase, Bob will still be paying more having an electric boiler installed, but the comparison will be the same Because the c o P on the S or heat pump will always be around free and the electric boiler will always be between one to 1.5. Let's look at the maintenance costs. Well, an S or heat pump will cost you around 180 to 200 pounds to get it serviced. This used the lower figure of 180 pounds times that by five, meaning five years. That gives us a cost of 900 pounds. An electric boiler, on the other hand, give a figure a hundred pounds. Over five years, we get a figure of 500 pounds, so the savings of an electric boiler versus an air or heat pump is 400 pounds over the five years. Bob is looking at the next five years. Bob thinks the electricity cost next year will triple and he thinks it'll stay the same for five years. Bob has worked out that the air source heat pump over five years will cost him a total 6,750 pounds.
The electric boiler will cost him 11,250 pounds. A significant difference having the SSL heat pump running for the five years will give him a four and a half thousand pound saving. However, the additional maintenance costs take that figure to 4,100 pounds. Bob has paid 5,000 pound more To have the SSL heat pumps. To make this saving significant electricity is going to have to triple, quadruple times five times 6, 5 7 to get that saving. Bob wants to look at the price of replacement. He wants to look at how much his OL's heap pump will cost him over 10 years, and how much his electricity boiler will cost him over 10 years. Right? The average cost is going to cost him between three and a half and four and a half thousand pounds. With the electric boiler cost him 1500 to 2000 pounds, which takes Bob to his first point. At the moment. Using an electric boiler to replace your gas boiler will save you a around a thousand pounds over five years, over 10 years, it'll revert on a replacement to stick with electric. Bob's gonna have his electric boiler installed and hold off air source heat pumps until they come down in price. Be like Bob.

If I have the correct cost per year Gas Boiler £380 ASHP £394 = £14 over Gas (you do save £100/year standing charge assuming all gas is disconnected making this £86 cheaper than gas) Electric Boiler £734 = £354 over Gas Now if you have some sort of Economy 7 or EV overnight rate those numbers will come down but neither of them look particularly appealing from a pure cost perspective given installation and maintenance. I am quite liking the look of Air-2-Air heat pump/AC since summer cooling is looking to be very useful given the changing weather. Summer running costs will also be negligible with solar panels.

Appreciate the message you're trying send but even to an engineer that's clear as mud.

Engineers aren't having these installed. 1000s of house holds are.... home owners dont have "the other sid eof the coin" on a sales pitch. regards JS

There are so many errors in this that I Don't know where to start. There is no electric boiler that can operate at more than 100% , I.e COP of 1. Whereas most modern heatpumps will easily have a SCOP of 4 or more. also all the maths is wrong, BOB needs to go back to school.

Hey sure can..... We havent found one ashp to have a scop of 4 over 12 months... -10 to 4 degrees ASHP will hit a maximum of 2.5. Even if designed correctly... Our point is.. electricity needs to be 7 x more expensive than todays prices to make ASHP even considerably "smart" electric boilers, cost a fifth of the price to install and replace, cheaper to maintain and a little more costly to run... over 10 years an electric boiler install (removing gas) you will be financially better off... PS- i have an ashp and dreading the day in 5 years time when it costs £6000 to replace.... i simply couldnt afford it..

If the electric boiler genuinely used 203 kw per hour as stated in the video Bob would be bankrupt. I think you meant 203kwh.😀

?? 1.5 COP from an electric boiler?? Does the law of thermodynamics not apply?? COP of 3 would be a very bad heat pump install…. Air-2-air with an air-to-water hpt water cylinder ks the way to go in my view.

Bob knows very little. Stick with the gas boiler and install solar with battery backup and use cheap rate electricity.
