Ashoka Hotel's Huge 'n Tasty Fish Thalis, Margao, Goa, June 2023
Ashoka Hotel is a hidden gem of Margao. It has been operating for 27 years. Every shopkeeper in Pajifond and New Market, and all office goers in Margao, know this place and its delicious, homely food. Yet, hardly anyone outside Margao knows about Ashoka Hotel.

Ashoka hotel was set up by Vishwanath Naik Tari 27 years ago, in Pajifond, Margao. His well mannered son Sairaj hosted us very nicely when we visited the place a few days back, and talked to us about his family restaurant’s history, ethos and well deserved reputation in Margao.
Ashoka Hotel is a short drive from Margao Municipal Garden. After Grace Church, turn immediately left onto Isidorio Baptista Road. Continue straight till Reliance Atria Mall and Allen Solly on your right. Bang opposite, in the Raymond showroom building, is Ashoka Hotel on the first floor.
There are so many landmarks to find Ashoka Hotel on Isidorio Baptista road, but the four biggest ones are Raymond, Bata, Allen Solly and Reliance Atria mall.
Costs we paid: Bangdo thali Rs 230, chonak and prawns thali Rs 270 each, xinaneo (mussels) rawa fry plate Rs 350.
When we enter, we are in the non AC section. In the humid monsoon season, we preferred to sit in the AC section.
In the monsoon season, what fish thalis are available on any day, depends on what was available in Margao wholesale fish market that morning. Today, there was good supply of chonak (sea perch/sea bass) and bangdos (mackerel), so I am having chonak (sea perch/sea bass) thali, Evelyn is having bangdo (mackerel) and Maria is having prawns thali.
While we are waiting for our food, we are discussing our favourite topics - fish and seafood availability in monsoon and fish recipes!
Here comes our fish! No more time for talking now.
Because Ashoka hotel has so many items in their thalis, they specially ordered these large thalis from Belgaum to accommodate all the items. But just because Ashoka’s thali is huge, does not mean it is expensive. This thali has both tisreo and crabs. You won’t see this in most places in Goa.
Rs 230 for the bangdo thali and Rs 270 each for the chonak and prawns thali was a very good rate, when you are also getting tisri and crab besides the curry, kismur and futi kadi. They even have a sweet item.
Also, these rates go even further down if you sit in the non-AC section. The bangdo thali, which cost us Rs 230, is just Rs 190 in the non AC section. Similarly, kingfish, chonak or prawns thali is Rs 270 in AC but Rs 240 outside.
Fish plate prices are as per market rate and season. For example, in monsoon time, we paid Rs 350 for xinaneo (mussels) rawa fry plate.
Costs of other thalis: chicken Rs 240, and Rs 260 in AC, mutton Rs 300 and Rs 320 in AC, veg Rs 140 and Rs 160 in AC.
Besides thalis, Ashoka hotel also serves a few more Goan dishes like chicken cafreal (Rs 300), mutton vindaloo (Rs 280), and plenty of Chinese and tandoori items.
The food was excellent. The curry was spicy, the teesrios large and delicious and the xinaneos absolutely crispy.
By the time we left, the tables were nearly all full and the lunch rush was only beginning. Many will have to wait outside for their lunch. Ashoka is one of the few Goan restaurants that serves fish thali at night also.
Tip: Not easy to find parking in the heart of Margao's shopping district in the day time, so be prepared to park some distance away and walk if you are here at lunch time.

Their food is average like their waiters....sounds harsh but that's the thruth
at curchorem we get bangda thali at 120 rs and conak n kingfish thali at 180 rs
Please try bombil in panjim i am Sure it would be worth it ..

Hi, we went to Baga and could not find an inch of parking anywhere near Dhananjay. We could not even use ATM because there was no place to park. We can’t cover places in Candolim-Calangute-Baga stretch because we can’t go there on bike from Benaulim

Not future, now. We made sorpotel and asado and ate with dal and rice for lunch. It was superb. Now will have pork again for dinner but with katre pao
Kindly do not eat shells n crabs for 15days after rains...
I visited this restaurant recently, had a worst experience food was tasteless not upto my expectations, where I have been watching on you tube, waste of money....
