Ashley's 9 month post-op bariatric surgery update

Check in with Ashley, 9 months after gastric bypass surgery.
Dr. Matthew Weiner is an author and bariatric surgeon who specializes in the treatment of obesity. His practice is located in Tucson Arizona.
Dr. Weiner graduated from the University of Michigan medical school in Ann Arbor, Michigan. He completed his general surgery residency at New York University Hospital in New York City. He practiced in suburban Detroit for 12 years before moving to Tucson in 2019 where he, together with Dr. Guillermo Higa, founded Tucson Weight Loss Surgery.
In addition to his surgical practice, Dr. Weiner is the Director of Bariatric Surgery and the Medical Director of Telemedicine at Tucson Medical Center. He is an active member of the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgeons (ASMBS) and is a past President of the Michigan State chapter a Bariatric Surgeons.
Dr. Weiner has performed more than 2000 bariatric surgeries since joining his first practice in 2006 and frequently does complicated revision surgery. He also performs general surgery with an interest in stomach and small intestine surgery along with complex hernia repair.
In his first book, A Pound of Cure, Dr. Weiner debunks the traditional understanding of calorie balance driving weight loss and offers a non-surgical solution to those suffering from obesity through nutritional stability.
His second book, How Weight Loss Surgery Really Works: And How to Make it Work for You, is now available on Amazon in paperback and kindle. In this book, Dr. Weiner describes how the hormonal changes that alter your brain, fat stores and hunger signals are the most important component of weight loss surgery, rather than the portion control effects that have been emphasized in the past.
A third publication called The Bariatric Diet Guide And Cookbook is a cookbook for bariatric patients that will offer recipes and guidance on the most effective post-surgical diet. It’s set to be published in May 2021 and is available for pre-order at most online bookstores.
On his website, www.poundofcureweightloss.com, he offers more than 150 videos on a wide array of nutritional and bariatric topics. Lesson plans range from, “Preparing for Weight Loss Surgery” to “The Metabolic Reset Diet” including recipes and meal plans.
Dr. Weiner is licensed to practice in both Arizona and Michigan and even offers Telemedicine appointments. For more information call his office at (520) 420-1000 or check out his many resources below. For more videos and Facebook Live events, subscribe to his KZread channel.

Love how positive this doctor is with Ashley. It isn't just within her control to stop eating. The surgery was a wonderful experience that helped her achieve success. Without that jump start she wouldn't be so successful, yet now she is one doing the hard work and it is totally paying off. She looks great and her upbeat demeanor are helping others find the courage to look into surgery for themselves. Thanks Dr. Winer for not talking down to your audience or patients. Other doctors out there seem to take a more negative approach with their patients.

What a great inspiration you are, Ashley. Keep it going, no matter what! Thanks Dr. Weiner; your talks about all of this is tops!! If I lived up north near your practice, I'd be there tomorrow. But, I am down here in Alabama ready to start interviewing (as I call it) bariatric doctors. Surely there is one around here who knows what he/she is doing. Such hope, such hope y'all have given me. .....too many years being unhealthy (big.) Great Job!

Dr. Weiner do you recommend following Pound of Cure food plan for recent VSGers? I'm 7 weeks post-op. Thanks!

At 7 weeks, it's going to be tough to get in all the veggies the Pound of Cure requires. Instead, I recommend following it the best you can, limiting the animal protein and focusing on the vegetable based protein sources. Eat veggies if you can, but it will be tough to get enough in. As the months pass, you'll be able to eat more - this is when you start loading up on the veggies.Good Luck!

I'm 51 and not losing like I think I should, I was 369 starting weight and am now 274, had lost to 269 but I've gained, got up this morning and clothes tighter...I was sleeved 7/22/13 so I'm a little over a year out. Don't want to gain and not even eating like I used to. So frustrated! I've listened to your videos and don't have confidence that anything will work for me. :( Will I lose on vegetables and not have protein drinks?

Angela Bennett Angela, these surgeries have variable effects- some people have a much more powerful response than others. Your case is a good example of why I typically recommend that those patients with a BMI over 50 undergo a gastric bypass rather than a sleeve. But, there is still plenty of hope for you - I recommend that you get started on the Metabolic Reset Diet (you can find it in my book - A Pound of Cure, available on Amazon). I recommend that you get off the protein shakes and start taking in as many vegetables as possible - you will lose on this program and it will probably open your eyes to what good nutrition really means.Good Luck.
