when we think about it unfazent was never bad It had very few screentime And it won 3/5 of its battles The ones it lost was against plot armor riolu And the undefeated koffing on which unfazent was the one who did most damage in order to allow leavanny to finish it

I think a big issue is that the double battle is rarely recognized when its accomplishments are revisited. At least a year or two ago, I don't think it was even mentioned on Bulbapedia

While it wasn’t terrible, Unfezant is definitely on the lower end of Ash’s regional birds in terms of memorability and status in the series.

I think that part of that comes from Ash constantly rotating his pokemon out regularly for the first time. Sure there were the staples on his team, like Snivy, Tepig/Pignite, and Oshawott, but aside from them and Pikachu, the rest of the team was kinda rostered in and out depending on the story’s context.

One of the weirdest writing decisions during the Best Wishes anime was not having Ash's Unfezant be one of his main Unova team members like the starters even though she was supposed to be Ash's main regional bird at the time. Getting more screentime would've done wonders for Unfezant.

@@ProfessorAlexSilvertbh this entire series was a mess. In fact the same writers that did this series did the kalos league originally ash was meant to win.

Poor Unfezant was wasted and done dirty. She pulled her weight as hard as she could but it was ultimately all for nothing as she drifted more and more into the background. Then when the writers decided to bring back Charizard and replace Unfezant as Ash's main flying type instead of keeping her on the team, I knew it was over for her at that point. Don't get me wrong, I have missed Charizard as have many fellow fans and was glad to see him again, it just felt a bit random and I dislike that they scrapped Unfezant because of that, and then we don't see her again until the very end of the BW Series and that was her final appearance until Journeys. Ash caught TWO flying types in Kalos and didn't randomly decide to replace one of them permanently, wasn't Ash a person who wanted to prove himself using the pokemon he caught in the region he was currently traveling in? It was all essentially Pidgeot all over again, with the only differences being that Unfezant at least got some wins in while Pidgeot had only one to speak of, and while Pidgeot was released and was never seen again until literally the FINAL EPISODE OF ASH'S ADVENTURE, Unfezant was replaced with Charizard, and never used again, not once, not even at least during the final 11 episodes when Ash regularly rotated his team, my heart really broke for her. You're always special to me, Unfezant!

She's so cute, if I was in the amine and was Ash, I would replace Pikachu with my Bird Queen!

I really didn't think Unfezant wasn't that bad either compared to what others thought. I mean a lot of people thought the same thing with Noctowl but let it slide cause it was Shiny (but its fight record wasn't that better with Unfezant either until it got redeemed in DP). Some people also judged her moveset (however Unfezant's moves is closest similar to Swellow). The one thing I liked about Unfezant (which is a similar thing for the rest of Ash's Unovans) is that at least we know her gender. My favorite moment I have with Ash's Unfezant was when she shielded Pikachu against Team Rocket & counterattack-KO'd them in the starting episode of the Episode N arc

While I wholeheartedly agree that it was a disappointment due to lack of status and memorability, I also didn’t think it was “that” bad either. But it was unfortunate that its another one of Ash’s Unova roster that got shafted and was heavily underdeveloped along with the lack of characterization. Not to mention that I personally wasn’t impressed by her movement and lack of interest left a soured impression in my mouth, she definitely deserved better to be honest!!! 😑😞 #pokemon

It probably was also soured by how people keep ragging on Unfezant even in the games, calling it the "worst" regional bird even though it was really only screwed over by its movepool. I mean, they gave it Brave Bird only in GEN 8 for gosh sakes.

@@valse6195 tbh 90 speed and 110 attack is usable. i feel like ashes unfezant should have had aerial ace, quick attack, steel wing and air cutter. steel wing is a egg move it can learn in the gen 5 games but its an anime so it randomly learning a egg moves during battle wouldnt be far - fetch. if ash were to use her in journey , he would have slightly more options. focus energy (to show off its ability super luck), hurricane , heat wave , night slash , brave bird. these are more options but i feel like there a moves that just make sense for unfezant to learn, like play rough, extreme speed , spirit break, slash. also i feel like super luck should be reworked. i feel like each move should have a 50% chance to crit and moves with high crit chance 75%

trouble with Unfezant is it had so little screen time (boxed in favour of Sewaddle and later sent to Oak so we could have Charizard back on Ash's team) she showed little personality and didn't really battle much, losing to Koffing and Riolu (despite a type advantage over Riolu), doing very little damage

Don't talk about that riolu loss, it was the biggest plot armour of all time and that too against Ash when Ash is considered by many to have plot armour. It was worst defeat then Ash v/s Tobias.

Ash's Unfezant may be his weakest pokemon of his team but she did win a few battles and she was good in most of her battles. I'm glad she gets some time to shine like most of Ash's pokemon.

I think Ash’s Unfezent was very interesting I think she was supposed to be the writers redemption for how poorly they handled Pidgeot but they failed but it funny that she does have more wins than Pidgeot does also it a shame Ash didn’t use Tranquil in his battle against Burgh after its evolution as it would be the first time he faced a bug type gym leader when he did own a Flying type and I think Ash would’ve used Pidove against Cilan’s Pansage If Oshawatt didn’t jump in like he already did that would’ve given Pidove a good early win after lossing to Team Rocket and do Ash’s Talonflame next.

Unfezant isn't a bad pokemon, I've used both male and female on the games, I agree that she hardly got any screen time after Ash caught Sewaddle

Honestly, sure, Ash's Unfeazant was very underused (thanks a lot, Black and White writers 😒), but still. To me, the moment when she went solo against Frillish and Amoonguss was really quite a moment for her. Despite an embarrasing loss in the League, she was itching to prove just how good she can fight. Personally, my positive experiences with Unfeazant come directly from my own experience with this Pokémon. I've used both variants so many times in Pokémon White, and it always turned out super fast and surprisingly tanky, sweeping Marshal's team like nothing, even withstanding Rock-type moves. So yeah, not the most memorable bird, but still with an impressive resume.😇 And I'll be real, despite everything, it really hurts hearing people call it "Unpleazant" or "Shitfeazant"... it really hurts, man...😭

Honestly speaking, I feel Pidgeot wasn't served justice. It was Ash's only regional bird that didn't evolve completely and when it did, it was freed in the same episode

I wish Unfezant would get more screen time and learn new moves in the series. Some of the new moves I’d suggest are Sky attack, Roast, Hurricane, and Air slash, but since these were suggestions I hope She could be better than Ash’s regional birds like Pideot, Noctowl, Swellow, Staraptor, and Talonflame.

Professor, I think you only discussed Greninja among Ash's Kalos team. Could you talk about Talonflame in the next History Complete, and then maybe Hawlucha?

I barely even remember Ash using this..I remember Pidove and Tranquil, but Unfezant was a footnote in history for me.

If I am honest, I genuinely loved Ash’s Unfezant but it’s such an shame how little screentime she had gotten and sure she wasn’t the best regional bird Ash in terms of status and memorability but even I felt bad for her whenever she loses. The only thing that angered me was people calling her “Unpleasant” or Shitfezant, I get there are people who dislike her with a passion and yes that loss against Riolu was very frustrating but Ash’s more popular Pokemon took embarrassing losses as well and even Noctowl’s win rate was worse than her in Johto, c’mon now!!! 🤦‍♀️😞

Honestly, I have a lot of nostalgia for its capture and release episode, but Pidgeotto did very little in between.

Ash’s unova bird unfezant more like unfortunat because I think it’s so unfortunate for ash’s unfezant to be bad! Wow! My guess is why unfezant isn’t as best bird is bc it wasn’t designed to be good like staraptor and swellow because I feel those birds are handed well in battle I actually used swellow in both my Pokémon Omega ruby and alpha sapphires teams! And he was pretty cool to have but I know ash’s is better due to the thunder armor it has with its duo with pikachu! Good stuff! But there were actually good stuff with ash’s unfezant it not only beat skyla but was very useful against ash’s snivy only because don’t was using attack and that’s what kept ash from defeating it before capturing it. And then ash had to switch unfezant out for his charizard in the episode he returned in and that worked pretty well. That’s my opinion on ash’s unfezant and still have at least some appreciation for it! Just like with all of his other Pokémon. 😁

Unfezant's biggest hurdle was it's almost complete absence of any personality traits, even compared to ash's other birds. A poor win rate can be forgiven if the Pokémon is likable enough (Gliscor and Tortetra) but she didn't even have that.

I still have to do the most brutish, aggressive, and possibly funniest of them all, not including Oshawott of course. Scraggy!

If professor Silver becomes a professor in the pokemon games, he'd definitely be the professor of history (They should add you as one)

I can't forgive them for giving Ash's Unfezant such a mediocre moveset (I mean, really, Gust of all things?) and only learning Aerial Ace once fully evolved when Staraptor got it early on and Swellow learned it right after the sixth gym but had a decent moveset for the time anyway given that there were much less attacks available. They really dropped the ball on Unfezant's move pool and had no reason to not make it better. They also did Krokorok dirty by making him get whooped by Swoobat and accomplishing nothing so Unfezant could save the gym battle. I really wanted to like Unfezant, but they made it hard. Plus she got folded by *Cameron's Riolu.* Snivy was bodying him until he evolved

What I would make her move set Sky attack, Detect, quick attack, air cutter

Oh I loved Ash’s Unfezant. It was a pretty strong battler. She beat Snivy since she was the same gender as her, attract didn’t have any effect back when she was a Pidove. I still find it funny 😄 of how Ash didn’t know it was a female until seeing of how attract didn’t have any effect, of course it doesn’t work on the Pokémon the gender as itself. She also lost to Trip’s Frillish, Cameron’s Riolu and Roxie’s Koffing after falling to the poison. Seeing her get poisoned was when things got Unfezant(unpleasant). The moves I remember her using was wing attack, aerial ace, quick attack and gust. I think out of all the regional bird Ash caught over the years, I’d say Talonflame was the strongest, Staraptor in second, Pidegot third and Unfezant fourth.

I really didn’t mind ash’s unfezant I don’t think it deserved the hate it got either the only thing I wish it was male instead plus I liked it’s battle with skyla

Unfezant was dealt a not so good hand with how she wasn’t really given a fleshed out personality of her own as did swellow, staraptor and noctowl each got. Much like the secondary members of Ash’s Unova team, Unfezant wasn’t able to get enough screen time and didn’t help her when Ash decided to bring Charizard back during his Unova journey and had her reside with Professor Oak.

Unfezant was done so dirty. It didn’t get a lot of screen time and interaction with any of Ash’s Unova team.I really wish Unfezant was seen more and got more development so it would be a lot better bird.

The title is crazy it wasn't that bad

Unfortunately Gen 5 having Ash suddenly become a bad trainer & the BW anime having been the worst of the anime generations hurt a lot. Losing to an unevolved Riolu in the league while being fully evolved & having the type advantage really hurt the perception of Unfezant too
